From ancient times, the season of Lent has been kept as a time of special devotion, self denial and humble repentance born of a faithful heart that dwells confidently on His word and draws from it life and hope. Sundays are not included in the forty-day count because every Sunday is a joyful celebration of our Lord's resurrection. The last week of Lent, known as Holy Week, is the holiest time of the liturgical year as the church commemorates the final week of our Lord s life, and includes the observances of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. The word Lent comes from the middle English lente (springtime) and the old AngloSaxon word lengten (the time when days grow longer). It is the holy springtime of our souls - a time for preparation, planting and growth. 3 From the Pastor February--The Great Leap--Epiphany to Lent David S. Wall, Interim Pastor Grace and Peace to you all in the name of Jesus. It is a great joy to be writing this to you. I am in my third day here at Healing Waters Parish--so if you want to know anything about the Parish, I have all the answers because I don't even know the questions yet. Seriously, it is great to be here and pariticipate with you in all the joys and challenges that you have to be the five mission outposts together working as Healing Waters Parish. I am trying to create some informal conversation opportunities to meet and greet you all. Having been in a five point parish before, I know that Sunday morning is a challenging time to have conversations longer than Hi and Bye. You may know that this is my 18th interim in as many years and I want you to know that since I heard I was going to have conversation with your representatives interviewing with them, I have been praying for you all and will continue to do that now and after I leave this interim pastorate. I live in Lakeville, Minn., with my spouse Catherine who also is on a church staff as Worship and Music Director in Lake Elmo, Minn. We have three grown children, here in Minnesota and one of them is in Virginia. We have a four year old granddaughter as well--go ahead--ask me about her February is quite a month where we will conclude the Epiphany Season and move into Lent on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 13(see Lenten Plan in this newsletter). That is a quick change from recognizing the glory of Jesus as God's only Son and then turning and moving intentionally to the Cross. You'll have to tell me if that is what life is like for our congregations here at HWP. We recognize the glory of Jesus and immediately head to the cross. I think the interim time has been difficult for many congregations where I have been. I am also convinced by the many experiences I have seen, that congregations have had both a time of cross and resurrection. We have many things we can share and learn in our time together in this interim period. It probably goes without saying, I have no magic wand or any tricks that always work in the interim time, but I hope you know that I am here to invite you to take weeks and months of congregational cleansing breaths as we look to the future together. Since we are God's hands in the world, let's make them praying hands. I know you have working hands or you wouldn't be where you are today as a parish. Our gospel reading the first Sunday in Lent is where Jesus is tempted in the wilderness to take his focus off of God and put it on things of the earth (food, land and supernatural power). The Christ keeps the focus on God. As the bishop of western North Dakota has said, "What in God's name is going on in this Church?" We have the opportunity to answer that question and move ahead in God's name. I am thankful for this time as your interim pastor. I hope if you would like any conversation with me that you feel free to contact me. My best contacts are by cell phone and and here they are. Cell and dswall2@yahoo.com. Peace to you for the journey--go in Christ's Peace--Pastor Dave Healing Waters Parish News February 2013 Page 3

HWP Youth will collect non-perishable food items and money again this Super Bowl Sunday.
