LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE You are invited to hear about the plan for Starts This the future of First Pres! Choose one Week! Wednesday session: September 3, 10, 17, or 24, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. If you cannot attend an evening session, please come to the afternoon session offered on Wednesday, September 17 at 1:00 pm. We will gather in the Chapel to look at three pillars of ministry to lead us into our future: Relational, Missional, and Caring Ministries. Child care will be provided. VOTE DEFERRED ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGES AT FIRST PRES On Monday evening, August 11, the Session voted, by unanimous decision, to postpone the vote on allowing same-sex marriages to be performed in the First Pres Sanctuary. All members of the Session felt strongly that they desired more time for prayerful discernment surrounding this issue while focusing on the future and vision of the church. NEW MEMBERS CLASS Are you interested in becoming a member of the First Pres family of faith or learning more about the church? The fall New Members Class begins September 14 with a special luncheon with staff, 12:30-2:00 pm in Fellowship Hall. Class continues September 21 October 12, meeting 9:45-10:45 am in the Boardroom. 2 Upcoming Events ICE CREAM SOCIAL Next Sunday, September 7, after each service, in the Parlor To celebrate fall and help kick off the new educational year, the Congregational and Community Life Committee is hosting an Ice Cream Social in the Parlor following each worship service. Deluxe ice cream sundaes and refreshing root beer floats will be served. Coffee will also be available. Enjoy these wonderful treats and join your First Pres friends for fun and fellowship. FALL KICKOFF IS NEXT SUNDAY Get ready to learn and grow beginning next Sunday, September 7! Children s, youth, and adult educational offerings will restart for the new educational year on that day, 9:45-10:45 am. YOUTH FALL KICKOFF Sunday, September 7 All youth (grades 6-12), their parents/guardians, the youth leaders and teachers, the Youth Ministries Committee, and all staff are invited to come to Fellowship Hall at 5:00 pm for a fun and informational meeting (and you get food, too)! We will discuss the upcoming program year, address changes from last year, learn about big events coming up to keep on your calendar, and have a few fun surprises thrown in, too! Questions? HABITAT PROJECT You are invited to participate in Wheeling Township s 27th Annual Community Paint-A-Thon with the First Pres Habitat Team. 3 Serving, Giving, and Growing UPDATE ON 4:11 4:11, the First Pres after-school program, is undergoing some changes and will begin in January, for Term 2. Stay tuned for more information. COLLEGIATE PHOTOS Bulletin Board We re collecting photos for the CollegeCARE bulletin board. The display helps the congregation to pray for our college students and welcome them home over breaks. Wanted: A 4x6 photo of each college student plus this information: student s name, year in school, school, area of study, and something he or she looks forward to this school year. Send Addresses & s, Too! Please send college student addresses for the school year both and a mailing address. We need the mailing address to which we can send care packages, and we sure could use the best address to let students know when goodies are headed their way. SCHOOL SUPPLIES COLLECTION Sundays, through September 14 The next Dominican Republic (DR) Mission Trip is scheduled for January 30 February 7, Now that school supplies sales are everywhere, please consider helping our mission by purchasing the following items, which can be dropped into the DR collection boxes in the Narthex: crayons, markers, glue sticks, Scotch Tape, rulers, scissors, pencils, and English/Spanish dictionaries and small bilingual books (found in dollar stores). DOMINICAN REPUBLIC MISSION FACTS Through your generous donations to the Dominican Republic Mission, more than 4,000 of our brothers and sisters in the Gaspar Hernandez region of the Dominican Republic now have clean drinking water, as bucket-water filter systems are constructed and made available to more homes. Thank you for making this possible! FOOD PACKING EVENT Stop by the table in the Narthex today or next Sunday to reserve your spot for the First Pres food pack at Feed My Starving Children in Schaumburg. We have a total of 90 slots for Saturday, September 27 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. All ages (5 and up) are invited. SOMETHING NEW FOR PADS: GROUP SIGN-UPS Have you ever thought about helping with the First Pres PADS Ministry? The First Pres PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) site is open each Tuesday (overnight) from October through April. Last year, we had a record number of guests. Would YOUR group (committee, Bible study group, Commune group, youth group, etc.) like to help this year? Make Dinner Learn how easy and convenient it can be for your group! MEMORIAL PRAYER GARDEN INTERMENT Effective September 30, 2014, the price for interment in the Memorial Prayer Garden will be $1,000.
