A graduate of Yale University, Fagan has painted portraits of all the U.S. presidents a collection that regularly tours the country for the White House Historical Association. He lives and works in Charlotte, N.C. Also an accomplished sculptor, Fagan s pieces include a bronze of President Ronald Reagan that stands in the Capitol rotunda and likenesses of Mother Teresa and Rosa Parks that are carved into the stone detail of the narthex of Washington s National Cathedral. The official canonization image was seen publicly for the first time at a press conference in Washington, D.C., at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine on Thursday, Sept. 1. It was commissioned by the Knights as a gift to the Missionaries of Charity, the order founded by Mother Teresa in Mass led by Pope Francis. Reproductions of the portrait were also given to the Missionaries of Charity and the poor they serve around the world.

2 The Knights of Columbus has been privileged to work closely with Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity since the 1970s, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. We always felt a special affinity with Mother Teresa, since our first principle is charity. As with her, that principle manifests itself in our own work and also through our help and support for the poor and vulnerable those on the margins of society. The Knights of Columbus printing plant in New Haven, Conn., has done other assignments for Mother Teresa s congregation. In 1988, the Knights were first honored to work with Mother Teresa, who personally delivered her order s constitutions and official book of prayers to be created by the printing plant that is now supporting her canonization. At the time, in a talk to nearly 600 K of C employees, she thanked the Knights of Columbus for all the good things they have done for the people of God. In 1992, Mother Teresa was chosen as the first recipient of the Gaudium et Spes Award, the highest honor that the Knights bestow. Defend Christians Facing Genocide 9/9/2016 Supreme Knight Carl Anderson called on Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the candidates of the two major political parties, to commit to assisting Christians and other religious groups facing genocide and extinction in the Middle East. The remarks came, Thursday, Sept. 8, following the presentation of the IDC Lifetime Achievement Award from the group In Defense of Christians for the work of Anderson and the K of C in defending Christians in the Middle East. Members of Congress representing both parties were in attendance. The award was presented at IDC s annual solidarity dinner. In his remarks, Anderson said: Our tax dollars to the region must not be used to rebuild a discriminatory system that continues to impose second-class citizenship upon religious minorities. U. S. aid for reconstruction, military and other purposes should be contingent on the application of full rights of citizenship to every citizen of Iraq and other countries in the region. To stop this ongoing genocidal process from happening on our watch, I call upon leaders of both political parties, as well as both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, to commit themselves to this agenda. First, to promote the international affirmation of the human rights of these indigenous communities in keeping with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, both as individuals and as distinct societies within their national framework and to end the second-class citizenship of religious minorities in the Middle East. Second, to help preserve these ancient communities, which should be considered part of the cultural heritage of all humanity, including through direct government funding for those communities that were targeted for genocide. This agenda demands from us a new realism in our approach to issues of human rights in the region. The Knights of Columbus has raised more than $11 million for humanitarian relief for Christian refugees, with a focus on Iraq and Syria. The Knights also worked with IDC to present a nearly 300-page report to the U.S. State Department documenting the genocide occurring against Christians at the hands of ISIS and related groups. That document, delivered by Secretary of State John Kerry on March 17, has been widely seen as instrumental in securing the U.S. government s genocide designation.

3 A Message from our Grand Knight Brother Knights, It was truly a pleasure to see so many of our Brother Knights at our Corporate Communion Mass this past month. The Assembly and Council were well represented. Many parishioners were impressed and commented on the number of Knights in full regalia and the grand procession for Archbishop Gustavo. Our recruitment effort is well under way. Our program committee headed by Brother James Sulak have been working vigorously with Fr. McHugh to create our Knights Corner. This will allow everyone leaving our masses to visit and check out our Council calendar of events. Information will be provided on which organizations our Council support. It will also serve as a gathering place for all Knights to welcome potential candidates. In addition, Fr. McHugh is committed to adding 30 additional Knights to our Council by October. He is truly on a mission and his fire and commitment are really contagious. I challenge every Knight to support our recruitment effort and to invite many of our Catholic Gentlemen to join our fraternity and make this the best Council in the entire Archdioceses. Many thanks to all the Knights who worked our first Spaghetti Dinner on the 27 th. We had a great turnout and what a way to break in St. Johns! What a restoration to a historic building. One hundred and sixty-seven plates were sold and the dinner once again was a home run. Thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary for the beautiful table arrangements and manning the tasty dessert table. The next dinner should even be better! Many tickets to our BBQ Pit raffle were also sold. The pit is really impressive and tickets are selling fast. If you have not bought your tickets or would like to assist us in selling, please contact SK Hal Lane for additional information. Remember only 500 tickets will be sold. This is a great opportunity to raise some additional funds to support our future projects. We will be hosting a Shrimp Boil on Saturday September 24 th. Once again I call on all Knights to assist in setting up St. Johns, serving our dinner and with the cleanup. Set up will once again begin at 3:00 pm. It is so much easier when everyone lends a hand. Volunteers are also needed to sell presale tickets after our masses on the weekends of the September 10 th and 17 th. 6 Father Francis Installation August 13, 2016 Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller was here on August 13 to celebrate the installation of Fr. Francis McHugh as pastor of St. Joseph-Honey Creek. Fr. Francis sister, Margaret was present at the installation Mass along with many from our parish and community. Following the installation Mass, refreshments and fellowship were enjoyed by all in the parish hall. All in attendance shared in the happiness, support and approval for our new pastor, Fr. Francis. 7 Our KOC Spaghetti Dinner was a tremendous success. St. John s Hall is really coming along and the dinner was a perfect time to show off all of the renovations. SK Joe Vocks advises we sold 166 plates with gross receipts of $1, After expenses, we netted $1, Not too bad for our first dinner this year! Many thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary for the table decorations and their assistance with set up and take down. Thanks to the many Brother Knights who showed up to help with this event and making it a huge success. Hope to see everyone on Saturday September 24th. This will be our first Shrimp Boil Dinner and we hope it is just as successful. 11 Faith Matters September: The Month of Our Lady of Sorrows By tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to a certain devotion. In September, it is Our Lady of Sorrows. The Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows takes place on September 15, the day after the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. We remember the suffering of Mary as she stood at the foot of the Cross and witnessed the torture and death of her Son. Devotion to the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady has its roots in Sacred Scripture and in Christian piety, which always associates the Blessed Mother with her suffering Son. Today's feast was introduced by the Servites in order to intensify devotion to Our Lady's Sorrows. In 1817 Pius VII suffering grievously in exile but finally liberated by Mary's intercession extended the feast to the universal Church. This feast is dedicated to the spiritual martyrdom of Mary, Mother of God, and her compassion with the sufferings of her Divine Son, Jesus. In her suffering as co-redeemer, she reminds us of the tremendous evil of sin and shows us the way of true repentance. May the numerous tears of the Mother of God be conducive to our salvation; with which tears Thou, O God, art able to wash away the sins of the whole world. As Mary stood at the foot of the Cross on which Jesus hung, the sword of sorrow Simeon had foretold pierced her soul. Below are the seven sorrows of Mary: 1. The prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:25-35) Michelangelo s Pieta, St. Peter s Basilica Daily Readings for Sept. 15 Collect: O God, who willed that, when your Son was lifted high on the Cross, his Mother should stand close by and share his suffering, grant that your Church, participating with the Virgin Mary in the Passion of Christ, may merit a share in his Resurrection. The body of Jesus being taken from the Cross (Psalm 130; Luke 23:50-54; John 19:31-37) 7. The burial of Jesus (Isaiah 53:8; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42; Mark 15:40-47)

13 The Church is equally aware of the responsibility that each of us bring towards our world, and to the whole of creation, that we must love and protect. And we can do a lot for the good of the less fortunate, for those who are weak and suffering, to promote justice, to promote reconciliation, to build peace. Pope Francis
