Eddie Jusino Prayer of Preparation November 18, 2018 The Season of Pentecost Holy Communion My church is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am friendly. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I invite and bring them. It will be a church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a church with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore Lord, I ask for the strength and courage that I may dedicate myself to playing my part in being all the things that I want my church to be. Amen. Lang Today s Reflection is from Sally Kirsten: Sally has been attending First Pres since her parents, Charles and Mary Shaw, moved the family to Farmington Township in She has been ordinated as an elder and a deacon and is a past moderator of our Presbyterian Women. Daughter Katie Masilow and her two sons also attend First Pres, representing the family s third and four generation to call this their church home. We also hold in prayer those in need and those impacted by the recent storms, natural disasters, gun violence and terrorism, as well as those who put themselves in harm s way to assist them. Church Office Thanksgiving Closure: The church office and building will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 22 and Friday, Nov. 23 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving Community Celebration: This year s annual interfaith worship service will be hosted by C.A.R.E.S. of Farmington Hills on Monday, Nov. 20. Representatives from a variety of houses of worship and community groups affiliated with the Farmington Area Interfaith Association will be participating. The event begins with a community dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by an inspiring, multicultural worship service from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Join us as we gather for worship with those from throughout our community. Help prepare Thanksgiving dinner: Join fellow Presbyterians at Westminster Church with preparations for dinner for 2000 homeless and needy persons. Three opportunities: prepare turkeys for cooking from 8am-5pm on Monday, Nov. 19; prepare side dishes and set tables from 8:30am- 1:30pm on Tuesday, Nov. and/or carve 106 turkeys, cut desserts from 11:45am-3:45pm on Wednesday, Nov. 21. If you can donate two hours, please call Dawn Hicks at and leave a message; she will call you back when she returns home. Donations of dinner rolls and pies are welcomed. 5

6 Advent Devotional Study: Come and join Pastor Eddie on Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m., in the Library for four weeks and explore the meaning of Christmas through the lens of Mary, the mother of Jesus, in Adam Hamilton s book and video study Not A Silent Night: Mary Looks Back to Bethlehem. No one was closer to Jesus than Mary, and no one shaped his life more than she. Beginning with what Scripture and early church tradition tell us about the end of Mary s life, then moving backward, this study will recount Mary s story, ending on Christmas with the birth of Jesus. Copies of the book are available in the Church Office at $8.00 each. Save the dates: Tuesday mornings beginning Nov. 27 and Dec. 4, 11, 18.
