1 The Church of the Open Hands First Presbyterian Church of Farmington Farmington Road Farmington Hills, MI (248) Prayer of Preparation January 13, 2019 Baptism of the Lord Dear God, this New Year may I be reborn, washed cleaned, made new, forgiven, spectacularly loved. Welcome & Congregational Life We Enter into God s Presence *Please stand in body or spirit Invitation to the Holy Spirit 744 Arise, Your Light is Come! (v. 1) Prelude Greensleeves James Biery Prophetic Reading Isaiah 43:1-7 O.T. p. 672 *Call to Worship God spoke through the prophet, Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. God calls us by name, we belong to God. When you pass through the waters, God will be with us. When you pass through the rivers, God will be with us. When you walk through the fire, God will be with us. God is our Savior, we are precious in God s sight. Come let us worship Emmanuel, God with us, who leads us into life. *Hymn 177 I Will Come to You 1
2 Confessing Our Separation from God (unison) We know what it is like to be scorched by the flames of our lives, Holy God. We look for ourselves in all the wrong places - success, power, adulation. We carve our names in the granite walls of work, hoping we will be remembered when we are gone. We have gone through the waters of baptism, but live as if they have not changed us. We need to hear your sure word, 'do not fear,' Shaper of our lives. Our failures do not cause you to quit loving us, for you continue to claim us, gathering us up in your compassionate arms. In our baptism, we discover not the end, but the first step of our journey with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. A Time of Silent, Personal Prayer for Peace *Song of Assurance More Than Before Kelly S. Moor When I need forgiveness Lord, when my heart is cold, when I am feeling overwhelmed, but no-one seems to know; You are my source of life, my shining light, my calm in every storm. You hold my shaking hand then I understand that in You I am more than I was before. Mindfulness Prayer We Hear God s Word Anthem Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light J.S. Bach Not for Children Only Prayer cards collected *Passing of the Peace of Christ Turn to your neighbor and pass the Peace of Christ Gospel Reading Luke 3:15-17, N.T. p As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16 John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. The Baptism of Jesus 21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. 2
3 Reflection Making Room for God Pastor Eddie We Respond To God s Word *Affirmation of Faith (Responsively) Study Catechism, Q 7, 31, 54, 87 What do you affirm when you speak of the life everlasting? That communion with Jesus Christ is eternal life itself. In him we were chosen before the foundation of the world. By him the eternal covenant with Israel was taken up, embodied, and fulfilled. To him we are joined by the Holy Spirit through faith, and adopted as children, the sons and daughters of God. Through him we are raised from death to new life. For him we shall live to all eternity. Song of Invitation 466 Come and Fill Our Hearts Come and fill our hearts with your peace. You alone, O Lord, are holy. Come and fill our hearts with your peace. Alleluia! Joys and Hopes of the People of God & The Lord s Prayer Offertory & Signing Old 120 th David Thorne of the Friendship Pad *Doxology All That We Have Jerry Custer *Prayer of Thanksgiving (unison) Luke 3:15-17, Sovereign God, we remember that becoming part of a Christian community was not a meaningless dedication but a call to be devoted openly to you. The sacrament of baptism is a reminder of all that we have received and all that we are asked to give. Like the heavenly voice you shared with your beloved son, we listen anew for your guidance and direction. Multiply these financial gifts so others may be baptized in your Precious Name. Amen. We Follow God s Word into the World *Hymn 547 Go, My Children, with My Blessing *Benediction Postlude Puer nobis nascitur Rebecca Groom Te Velde Today s Flowers are given by: Paul and MJ Floreno in memory of MJ s mother, Joan Lohr. Prayers for the grieving: For the Diehl family for Charlene s mother Mary E. Davis, who moved from life to More Life on January 2. 3
