2 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME! SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION NEXT SUNDAY S GOSPEL READING SAINT OF THE WEEK JULY 25 JAMES, APOSTLE SHARERS IN THE SUFFERING OF CHRIST LUKE 11:1-13 J esus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples. He said to them, When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test. And he said to them, Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him, and he says in reply from within, Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything. I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitor the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence. And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? The sons of Zebedee press Christ: Promise that one may sit at your right side and the other at your left. What does he do? He wants to show them that it is not a spiritual gift for which they are asking, and that if they knew what their request involved, they would never dare make it. So he says: You do not know what you are asking, that is, what a great and splendid thing it is and how much beyond the reach even of the heavenly powers. Then he continues: Can you drink the cup which I must drink and be baptized with the baptism which I must undergo? He is saying: You talk of sharing honours and rewards with me, but I must talk of struggle and toil. Now is not the time for rewards or the time for my glory to be revealed. Earthly life is the time for bloodshed, war and danger. Consider how by his manner of questioning he exhorts and draws them. He does not say: Can you face being slaughtered? Can you shed your blood? How does he put his question? Can you drink the cup? Then he makes it attractive by adding: which I must drink, so that the prospect of sharing it with him may make them more eager. He also calls his suffering a baptism, to show that it will effect a great cleansing of the entire world. The disciples answer him: We can! Fervour makes them answer promptly, though they really do not know what they are saying but still think they will receive what they ask for. How does Christ reply? You will indeed drink my cup and be baptized with my baptism. He is really prophesying a great blessing for them, since he is telling them: You will be found worthy of martyrdom; you will suffer what I suffer and end your life with a violent death, thus sharing all with me. But seats at my right and left are not mine to give; they belong to those for whom the Father has prepared them. Thus, after lifting their minds to higher goals and preparing them to meet and overcome all that will make them desolate, he sets them straight on their request. Then the other ten became angry at the two brothers. See how imperfect they all are: the two who tried to get ahead of the other ten, and the ten who were jealous of the two! But, as I said before, show them to me at a later date in their lives, and you will see that all these impulses and feelings have disappeared. Read how John, the very man who here asks for the first place, will always yield to Peter when it comes to preaching and performing miracles in the Acts of the Apostles. James, for his part, was not to live very much longer; for from the beginning he was inspired by great fervour and, setting aside all purely human goals, rose to such splendid heights that he straightway suffered martyrdom. PARISH LIFE AT A GLANCE Mon July 22 5:30pm Schola Choir Practice, Church Tue July 23 Wed July 24 Dear Members and Friends of St. John's! My name is Maggie Fitch, and I am currently a Salesian Lay Missionary, working as an English teacher and youth group leader in Bolivia, the poorest country in South America. Although some of you may not have met me, I used to be an active member of St. John's, and I still consider it my "home" parish, though I'm now far away. As I am drawing to the close of my year of service, I wanted to share with you a little bit about my mission and make a request for your help. To be short and sweet, I'm trying to help the various youth groups at the Centro Sagrado Corazon, our youth center here, by raising money for several needs: the recently-started music program needs to purchase instruments, and all the groups could benefit from a multimedia projector and some sports equipment for common use. If you would like to assist in my efforts to support the Catholic formation of these disadvantaged children and youth, please take a look at the longer letter I've sent, which has been posted outside in the glass case. Whether you contribute financially or with your prayers, I thank you sincerely for your participation in my mission here. May God bless you and accompany you always. 5 ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH! FAITH FORMATION! "GOD IS GOOD.ALL THE TIME! This past week, our parish was graced by the arrival of the Totus Tuus TEAM. The Team of four college students Taylor, Sean, Sarah and Joseph, spread joy and the love of Christ among the children and youth enrolled in the program, as well as many parishioners. The day program was alive with songs of praise and worship, outrageous skits, and catechetical instruction. Mr. Reginald and recess games kept it fun and lively while daily opportunity for confession and participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass kept it firmly grounded and holy. Several of the young boys served at Mass while other children proclaimed the readings and psalms. The teen program, which tripled in size this year, ran the gamut from marshmallow fights and shaving cream, wiffle ball to guided mediation, Adoration, apologetics, and Theology of the Body. Each evening concluded with evening prayer in the Church. Totus Tuus, Latin for Totally Yours, instructs young people in the basic tenets of the Catholic faith to cultivate both a firm intellectual grounding and a solid relationship with Jesus. The focus this summer was The Sacraments and The Joyful Mysteries. Fr. Eckert s homilies were beautiful exchanges of a pastor s wholehearted teaching and the children s sharing of their lessons learned! The young voices praising God were joyful, sweet and reverent Jesus I adore you and I lay my life before you how I love you. Our Totus Tuus Potluck Dinner was well attended with a fantastic spread of food! All in attendance were treated to a review of the Totus Tuus week through songs sung by the children with the ever entertaining Bananas song and motions. On behalf of the Team, I thank all who attended and contributed to the wonderful meal and fellowship. The Totus Tuus mission finished on Thursday for the middle and high school teens. The evening included a cookout, apologetics, fellowship, and Fr. Eckert s favorite corn hole toss. The day program for children wrapped up on Friday, learning about the fifth joyful mystery: Finding of Jesus in the Temple. After Mass and delicious Buck s Pizza, the children were treated to a water fight and made a human sundae out one of their Totus Tuus leaders! This wonderful mission was made possible by the gifts of hospitality, time and service of many individuals of our parish. First, I thank Fr. Eckert, Brian Becker and the Totus Team of Taylor Halbig, Sean Mitchell, Sarah Taylor and Joseph Hayes for their time, and their witness. As Pope Paul VI wrote, Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 41) I thank our gracious host families: the Skellies, Thens and Smiths who graciously opened their homes and gave our Team lodging for the week. Many thanks to our parishioners who hosted the Team for dinner during the week: Bob and Suanne Then, Gretchen and Greg Lobas, Palma and Jack Davis, Marty and Joel Raines, and Fr. Eckert. The gratitude and appreciation continues with our lovely lunch ladies : Kathleen Dolan, Dea Mechensky, Patty Ausom, Theresa Sabo, and Ann Strozzo, who provided the Team and volunteers with a wonderful lunch each day. Kudos to Matt Lynch for serving up burgers, dogs and fries for the JHS/HS cookout! In addition, our program was supported by our day volunteers: Annie Clyborne, Mary King, Megan Hayden, Lily Nelson, Denise Kennedy, Susan Leong, and Maggie Overton. I thank each family who enrolled their child, teen or grandchild/teen in this wonderful program and the children and teens who came openly to develop a loving personal relationship with Jesus Christ. And last but definitely not least we thank all of our parish intercessors who offered prayers for all involved this week Thank you! May God bless you and your families!
