1 Week of April 15, 2012 Lessons for the Leader When was the last time you had a conversation about a longed-for experience? Do you remember the excitement in your voice as you talked about what happened? Consider the excitement of two men who, without realizing it, walked with Jesus. Read Luke 24: Imagine the men's conversation as they walked along the road. What do you think the men argued about? How would you feel if Jesus appeared to you while you were having an argument with a friend? Would you tell Jesus what you were discussing? Read verses With what tone of voice do you hear the men speaking? Notice how Jesus patiently listened to the men's facts. Do you sense a feeling of defeat in the men? Read verses What did the men think as Jesus began to explain the Scriptures? How many people do you know, like those men, who are slow to believe what God reveals? Read verses Notice how the men did not recognize Jesus until He broke the bread. Recall the last time Jesus broke bread was at the Last Supper, when He informed the disciples how His body would be broken. Why do you think God chose the breaking of bread to reveal Jesus to the men? Why do you think Jesus so quickly disappeared? Reflect on your responsibility of guiding children to worship. Do you feel a burning in your heart to tell children and their families about Jesus? How does knowing Jesus is alive impact your life and ministry? What keeps you from personal experiences with Jesus? Pray for yourself to daily experience the presence of the living Savior. Pray for the children in your ministry to hear about the living Savior. Also pray they can have experiences with Him and act on the faith that Jesus is alive. What do these symbols mean? 1aApplication Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. On the Road to Emmaus Worship 3 Sing "Happy Day" (DVD, 3 minutes) 4a Sing "The Power of the Cross" (DVD, 3 minutes)/receive Offering/Pray 5aIntroduce Life Application (2 minutes) Set of "Items" cards from Introduction to Worship Ask: "How did you know if the item you selected is alive or not?" Invite the children to talk about how to tell if something is alive. Continue: "What were some living things?" Ask: "If I put a card with the name 'Jesus' in the bag, would you say Jesus is alive or not? Why?" Say: "Jesus died on the cross, and God raised Him from the dead. We can know Jesus is alive." 6aShow "Lads" Video (DVD, 7 minutes) Show the video. Discuss how Mark helps Elliott understand Jesus is alive. Ask: "What can we do to help our friends know Jesus is alive?" 7aLearn the Key Bible Verse (4 minutes) Wide craft sticks (1 per child), markers Distribute craft sticks. Ask: "Have you ever had a doctor tell you to stick out your tongue and say 'ahh'? The doctor may take a stick and press down on your tongue so she can see your throat. Let's use craft sticks to help us learn our Bible verse." Distribute craft sticks and markers. Say: "Open your Bibles to Acts 2:32." Select a volunteer to read aloud Acts 2:32. Say: "A witness is 'someone who tells about what he has seen, heard, or experienced.' We will learn about some men who saw Jesus alive after His crucifixion." Guide: "On one side of your craft stick, write Jesus is alive. On the other side write witness." Assist as needed. Gather markers. Say: "When I tell you to do so, toss your craft stick in the air and allow it to land on the floor. If the words 'Jesus is alive' are on the top, you will say the first part of Acts 2:32. If the word 'witness' is on top, you will say the last part of the verse. We will all say the reference." Toss and say the verse several times. 8aTell the Bible Story (7 minutes) Index cards, marker Write Luke 24:18; Luke 24:21-23; and Luke 24:31 on individual cards. Enlist three children to locate and mark the Scripture passages printed on the index cards. Open your Bible to Luke 24. Ask: "Can someone tell me what happened when Mary Magdalene (MAG duh leen) and the other Mary arrived at Jesus' tomb?" Review how the women learned Jesus is alive. On the Road to Emmaus Based on Luke 24:13-35 On the same day Mary Magdalene and the other Mary learned Jesus is alive, two of Jesus' followers were traveling to the village of Emmaus (eh MAY uhs). As the men walked, they talked about everything that had happened. Jesus came up to the men and started talking with them; however, the men did not recognize Him. Jesus Page 2 of 15

3 asked, "What are you arguing about?" The men stopped. One of the men, named Cleopas (KLEE uh puhs), answered Jesus' question with another question. [Direct child with Luke 24:18 card to read aloud.] Jesus asked, "What things?" The men responded, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, a powerful man of God. The chief priests and leaders handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and He was crucified." The men continued, [direct child with Luke 24:21-23 card to read aloud] "Some of the people who were with us went to the tomb. They found things just as the women said, but they did not see Jesus." Jesus said, "How unwise you are. You do not believe what the prophets said about the Messiah." Jesus explained the Messiah had to suffer all of the things in order to accomplish what God wanted. Then beginning with Moses, Jesus helped the men understand everything the Scripture told about Himself. When they reached Emmaus, the men urged Jesus to stay with them. Jesus agreed. Later at dinner, Jesus took bread, blessed it, and broke it into pieces for the men to eat. [Direct child with Luke 24:31 card to read aloud.] The men said to one another, "We were excited when Jesus was with us, teaching us." They returned to Jerusalem where they found the disciples and told them, "Jesus has been raised!" They told the disciples exactly what took place. 9 Review the Bible Story (5 minutes) Print "Emmaus" Teaching Picture (CD). Display. Call attention to the teaching picture. Ask: "What would you have done if you were one of the men walking to Emmaus and a man you did not recognize appeared and began asking questions? What would you have told him?" Continue: "How do you think Jesus felt listening to the men's responses?" Ask: "Why do you think Jesus left as soon as the men recognized Him? How do you think the men felt when they knew who Jesus was?" 10aMake Life Application (6 minutes) Worship Guides, pencils, tape, taped together April 1 and 8 Worship Guides Teacher Tip Provide copies of April 1 and 8 Worship Guides. Everything the Bible says is true. Let's develop our Bible skills." Guide the children to form teams. Say: "I will call out two books of the Bible. Your task is to open your Bible to the book that comes between the two I call. For example, if I say 'Matthew and Luke,' you need to find the Book of Mark. The first team to correctly locate the book gains a point." Call out various books of the Bible. Congratulate the kids on their efforts. 15a Transition to Application Activities or Wrap-Up Week of April 15, 2012 Page 3 of 15

Give each set of partners a tape measure and table tennis ball. Continue: "I'll ask you a question. If you and your partner answer correctly, you may extend the tape measure 1 foot. One partner will hold the extended end of the tape measure on the floor. The other partner will hold the other end of the tape measure about 3 inches off of the floor. Place the ball on the tape measure and allow it to roll to the end. If you successfully roll the ball all the way down the tape measure, next time you may extend to 2 feet."
