GREETING & ANNOUNCEMENTS * OPENING HYMN No. 127 (UMH) Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah * A MODERN AFFIRMATION Pastor: Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare: People: We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, and love, whose mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to his children's good. We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of man, the gift of the Father's unfailing grace, the ground of our hope, and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death. We believe in the Holy Spirit as the divine presence in our lives, whereby we are kept in perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find strength and help in time of need. We believe that this faith should manifest itself in the service of love as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord, to the end that the kingdom of God may come upon the earth. Amen. 5 Guatemala Mission Trip Great news, several people have already signed up for the October 2018 teams! Last year was amazing. For the first time we served 400 Guatemalan families with our two teams. This is a life changing ministry, not only for the people we serve but also for team members. In 2018, we are sending 3 teams. The first team will be mostly High Point University students. Pastor Andy is looking forward to serving on the 3 rd team scheduled for October 27 - November 3, You have an opportunity now to reserve a spot on our teams. Go to Outreach/Changing Lives in Guatemala for an application form or contact Max Kern at hmaxkern@gmail.com for more information. Help Wanted! - Volunteers are needed for our Easter Event and Vacation Bible School. Please take time to visit the bulletin board located in the information area between the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall. You will find lots of details and have an opportunity to sign up! Contact Larissa Brown at larissa.brown@oakridgeumc.org for more information. UMM Scholarships - Graduating high school students and college undergraduates are encouraged to submit applications for the UMM Scholarships. The scholarships are for $500 each. Forms are available in the lobbies and information areas and on the website. There will be one $500 scholarship awarded to a graduating high school senior and one to a student already in undergraduate school. Forms must be submitted by Sunday, April 22 for consideration. Line Dancing Ministry - We would love to offer a beginning line dancing class. If you are interested in leading a class with basic knowledge and beginning dance steps, contact Tina Crain at crain.tina@gmail.com. Aren t feeling well on Sunday? - Our church has dedicated staff and members who want to serve and be present every Sunday and we want to see their faces too, however, if you feel ill, you are not neglecting your duties by staying home. You are doing the right thing by protecting others from an infectious illness. Someone will cover for you and you will recover faster by staying home and treating your illness with rest. Also, we have church members who have chronic illnesses that cannot risk an infectious illness that might be brought to church. We wish you good health and hope to see you every Sunday you are well and able to attend. Need a Bible? - Bibles are available in the lobby free for the taking. Please, if you do not have a Bible, you are encouraged to take one. It is God s life-changing love letter to you and to the entire world. 5

7 The Last Supper The Last Supper Chrismon, located near the altar, is an interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci s painting. The Apostles and Christ are represented by the type of cross they were either martyred upon, or that reflects aspects of their life. From left to right the crosses are as follows: Bartholomew: The teardrops represent figs and are significant because Jesus first saw Nathanael (Bartholomew) sitting under a fig tree. James (the Less): James was stoned to death, thus the use of rock-like beads. He was called James the Less because he was younger than James, the brother of John. James, who is said to have been the first bishop of Jerusalem, was highly respected for his knowledge of the law. Andrew: Peter: Judas: John: Jesus: James: Thomas: Philip: Matthew: Jude Simon: Andrew was crucified on a cross saltire because he refused to worship a pagan god. He was the first real friend that Jesus had. Andrew was called the introducer for it was he who introduced his brother to Jesus, and the first of the Greeks to Him. When Jesus met Peter, He said You are Simon, but shall be called Peter, the Rock. Peter preached the Gospel all his life, carrying the Word of God as a Light to people in darkness. His cross is upside down because Peter did not feel worthy to die in the same position as Jesus. The broken cross is used because Judas betrayed Jesus, and the money bag symbolizes the money Jesus gave him to provide food and shelter, as well as the 30 pieces of silver he took for betraying Him. John was known as the beloved Disciple. He represents the highest power and strongest Christian quality Love. He was considered triumphant over the ways of the world, thus his symbolic cross. He was the only Disciple not to die a martyr s death but was sent into exile. The Chalice and the Bread on this cross symbolize the blood and body of Christ. The brother of John, James is believed to be the first Disciple to suffer martyrdom and die by the sword. The staff represents the many journeys he made sharing the Gospel. It is believed Thomas was killed by a spear while kneeling in prayer. The half-cross or carpenter s square represents his original trade before he began fishing with Peter and Andrew. He was also called the Greek because he spoke the language so well. Philip was a powerful and vital man and, using his power of the Word, healed the sick and cast out unclean spirits. Matthew, a tax collector and money changer, was well-educated and had more worldly goods to give up than some of the other Disciples. According to traditional legend, Jude made many missionary journeys across the sea, thus the anchor is his symbolic cross. Simon, who represents the fiery zealot with a Cause, did finally become gentle and loving through his association with Jesus and the Disciples. He made the ministry his life s dedicated work. He was a great preacher of the Gospel, thus the Bible and the fish are representations of his life. This Last Supper Chrismon is a gift to Oak Ridge UMC from the Chrismon Ministry. 7

This is a local mission, serving those who live within a 10-mile radius of the 11 member churches in Stokesdale and Oak Ridge. Through your generosity, ORUMC provided 4833 pounds of food items, and approximately $2,000 for emergency financial assistance in Over the past several months, we have seen an increase of over 50% in the number of families seeking help, and the number of boxes of food handed out.
