1 The Most Holy Trinity Sunday, June 3, 2012 MONDAY June 4, :00 a.m. Daniel Oprish by Nash Family Worship and Word This Sunday s Readings Next Sunday s Readings Deuteronomy 4:32-34, Exodus 24:3-8 Romans 8:14-17 Hebrews 9:11-15 Matthew 28:16-20 Mark 14:12-16, Gather Book 975 Gather Book 978 Weekend of June 3, 2012 How does the uniting love of the Most Holy Trinity Father, Son, and Holy Spirit flow out into the world? One way is through us disciples. We received that love at our Baptism, we are nourished by it regularly at Mass, and we act out of it in our lives. In every place we are called to safe-guard the dignity of all, to care for the poor and vulnerable, and to act for the common good. Gospel: Matthew 28: Theme: The Trinity. Question for Children: Why do you think Catholics make The Sign of the Cross when we pray? Question for Youth: How often do you think about God as Trinity? How do you relate to each member of the Trinity? Question for Adults: As each of us is called and sent by Christ, how have you incorporated this into your own life, whether married, single, in religious life, or ordained? Dave Today is the Feast of the Holy Trinity, a dogma of our church as is our feast next Sunday Corpus Christi. A dogma is a doctrine promulgated with the highest authority and solemnity and as Catholics we are invited to embrace the mystery freely and fully, not only with our minds, but also with our hearts and souls. Throughout the centuries many have tried to explain the dogma/mystery of the Trinity in different ways. There have been many right-brain illustrations and symbols of the Trinity. The most famous being the Story of St. Patrick and the Three-Leaf Clover to represent, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, thus why we wear the green on March 17. On the other hand, there are other people with developed left-sides of the brain and they too try to explain the Trinity to us. Perhaps the one we accept more than others is Thomas Aquinas, the thirteenth century Dominican Priest known as the Angelic Doctor. St. Thomas has been an immensely influential philosopher and theologian in our church and his teachings we call Scholasticism. Every Catholic priest has studied Thomas Aquinas and, I might add, he is often very difficult to understand. He talks about the tremendous love of God, the Creator-God, the Mother-Father God, and their projected love, which created the Son of God. The Son, in loving the Father, created the Holy Spirit. All of this we try to express in our Profession of Faith. But neither the symbols of the right-side of the brain, nor the theology of the left-side of the brain takes us anyplace. All the knowledge in the world is not going to affect anything. It is only when you and I step through the Gateway in the concept of prayer and contemplation, that we find understanding of the Trinity. Yes, a dogma of faith but it is faith seeking understanding. All through the scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, we have these little vignettes, these little seeds that can activate our minds and hearts to be able to enter into prayer with The Holy Trinity. In Proverbs 8:22-31, the author talks about the creation of the world and says that when God created the clouds and the water, and the mountains and all that we know as nature, I was there. Then God danced on his creation, and looked upon this human race and He was very pleased. What a beautiful statement! And a dancing God! Has that ever been part of your prayer life, thinking about God dancing on His world, in creation and in the valleys and in the sunrise and in the sunset? Then He looked on His creation and God sees you and me, with our freedom and our humanity, with the gifts and abilities that we have been given to us and God was pleased. I suggest this is a strong motive for prayer and to enter into the mystery of the Holy Trinity. This is what we are to do with our theology and our dogma. Many times we are tempted to intellectualize them, and go through church history books and theology books and try to memorize every line and every fact. But this is not prayer. Prayer is recognizing a mystery and making it part of our spiritual journey and prime examples are The Trinity and The Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). We do not and we cannot understand either dogma but it doesn t matter if we understand it or not. The mystery of the dogma is necessary for our faith. We recognize that there is something we do not understand and that we just have to take on faith, and we believe it to be part of the Unknown God. What does God look like? We think of God the Father as the old man with the white beard. We think about Jesus Christ as the one who walked around with a beard and long hair. And as we reflected last weekend we think of the Holy Spirit as a dove. But it is not important that we have a fixed concept of what the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit looked like. What is important is that we recognize the love that God has for us, and the invitation that is extended to us to come and play and dance in His creation. Our faith gives us that opportunity to have God look at us as we are, our fears, our joys, our sadness, or whatever it might be, and know that God is pleased with us. Now that is real prayer.
