This tiny seed, which fits in the palm of a hand, can grow to fifteen feet with sprawling branches! Like the mustard seed, the Christian community had a tiny, seemingly insignificant beginning. The church, which began with about 120 followers, added three thousand people on Pentecost Day following the descent of the Holy Spirit. Since then, the number of Christ s disciples has grown incalculably and continues to grow throughout the world. Good stewards go about God s business of planting seeds among all those they encounter. What will we do this week to add to God s kingdom? There will be no evening or Saturday morning Communion Services until restoration of the church is complete. Dave Last week s bulletin I ended my reflection about the Eucharist and said we would continue today with some thoughts on the new English we use at Mass. Fr. Michael Ryan, a pastor in the Archdiocese of Seattle, proposed in 2009 to delay the publication of the new English Missal and road-test it for one year before being implemented. 2,300 people in this English speaking world signed on to his website and supported his effort, but this all fell on deaf ears and so we have the new English Missal. Some background may be useful. Popes John XXIII and Paul VI ( ) were the Popes of Vatican Council II. Many will recall John convened the Council, he died and Paul finished it and then began the task to implement the documents of this Council. At Pope Paul s death in 1978, the Polish Pope John Paul II took control of the Church and he became suspicious of the power given to the National Episcopal Conferences in the world and the power given to the laity and gradually much of the work of Vatican II and its documents were diluted and the Church began ever so slowly to curtail and eliminate the renewal began in the late 60s and move back to the 50s. Pope Benedict, in many ways, continues this same effort and many examples can be given. So we have now a Vatican II Church and another Church we might call Pre-Vatican II in mentality and practice. Some Catholics want to dismiss the 1960 Council as irrelevant and not binding, but an ecumenical Council we do not, we cannot dismiss, even a Pope cannot. The new English Missal is a prime example. Another is the ongoing investigation of the Women Religious in this country and we will deal with this at a later time. Anyone can read two documents of Vatican II (they are not difficult to read and can be found on the internet) these two documents being The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy and The Church in the Modern World. If you take some time to read these I think you may agree with what I am saying here. It is much like national politics today, one can decide where one is as a member of the Church, neither one right or wrong, let us say different churches but all the same Catholic. With this in mind, we can now take a look at the new English Missal we began last Advent, almost seven months ago. How do you like the new English Mass? I and many priests with whom I talk, are having difficulty praying the new English and making it say something prayerful to those assembled for Mass. I do the best I can, but stumble on the wooden and literal translations, archaic vocabulary ( consubstantial, oblation ) inflated language (holy and unblemished, paying their homage, enter under my roof ). Some of the new prayers are beautiful and help me pray at Mass. But often the language is not the way you and I talk, even to God. It is so different from the plain spoken words of Jesus in prayer and parable and is in glaring contrast to the directive of the Constitution on the Liturgy of Vatican II which says: both texts and rites should be drawn up so that they express more clearly the holy things which they signify; the Christian people should be able to UNDERSTAND THEM WITH CLARITY and to take part in them fully, actively and as befits a community. Do you understand this new translation with clarity? I hope you do but often I do not and I struggle and stumble over the convoluted syntax of the prayers. And if I do not understand, how in heavens name will you understand since you do not have the text before you? This being so, I suggest poor pastoral theology is happening each Sunday in our parish churches and our hands are tied: we are held to the new text. I am convinced many Catholics, lay and ordained, will not say it but do not care for Vatican II and its aftermath and were delighted to see the old Sacramentary disappear and this new English we use being implemented. After 50 years being a priest I like to say what I want and you are free to agree or to not agree. I saw Vatican II happen and its implementation and was thrilled and now I am saddened at times to see the attempts to undo the Council of 1962, the year of my ordination. We will continue this discussion next week?
