The United Methodist Church at Shrub Oak 1176 East Main Street Shrub Oak, New York Office: Fax: Parsonage: OUR THIRD CENTURY IN SERVICE OF THE LORD Reverend Iwy Patel-Yatri, Pastor June, 2018 Vol. 40, No. 6 Next Deadline 6/10/18 THIS IS THE LAST CHIMES MAILING. FUTURE MAILINGS WILL BE SENT ELECTRONICALLY. HARD COPIES WILL BE SENT TO THOSE WHO REQUESTED. Dear UMCSO Family, It s been a whirlwind of a month as we celebrated the various events in the life of our church; from receiving new members, Mother s Day, Baptisms, Confirmation and Pentecost Sunday. Yet in the midst of these celebrations, some folks had to deal with the physical effects of the recent storm and still others are trying to cope with life storms that have been beyond their control. As we navigate through these things, God reminds us that his presence is a constant in our life. God is closer to us than our very breath. On May 20 th, we celebrated Pentecost, which is the coming of the Holy Spirit into the hearts of those who believed and accepted Christ as their Savior. In the struggles of life, I invite us to remember that the Holy Spirit, who resides in our hearts is more than able to help us with the concerns we face. If you are wondering how to receive the Holy Spirit, hear again the words of Peter on that day of Pentecost. The message translation of the Pentecost story in Acts 2:38-39 reads, Change your life. Turn to God and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, so your sins are forgiven. Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is targeted to you and your children, but also to all who are far away whomever, in fact, our Master God invites. The good news is that God has invited everyone who believes in Christ to receive God s Holy Spirit. All we have to do is turn to Christ and believe in him. Change. Turn. Receive. Those are the three steps to a transformed life as outlined above. Let s explore these steps.

Change: This is one the hardest things for us to do as humans. We work diligently to create routines that are familiar. When we do not know what to expect, we tend to resist going in that direction because we do not like uncertainty. However, if you are finding that the way you are doing things is not working out, then it might be time for a change. The disciples changed when they realized that their understanding of the promised Messiah who would save them was different than the reality of Christ, who died for the forgiveness of sins. When they finally accepted that Christ s death and resurrection was God s plan for our salvation and they believed in Christ as their savior, their lives changed. Turn: The disciples turned from their pattern of life before Christ to a whole new way of life. Their focus was now on Christ and with an eye towards the kingdom, they went out into the world to tell all who would listen about this great news of forgiveness of sins and new life! If we claim to believe in Christ but continue to live our lives the way we have always lived them, then chances are we will struggle and buckle under the challenges of life. We need to follow the example of the disciples and turn towards Christ and his promises. Receive: All who accepted Christ as their savior were changed because they received power from God s Holy Spirit. No longer were they controlled by the circumstances around them, but they changed the world because they were given a power larger than anything on this earth. Have you received the gift of the Holy Spirit? Friends, it is as simple as saying, Dear God, I need you. I believe in Christ who died for my sins. I invite your Holy Spirit to help me believe, trust and follow you. In Christ, I pray. Amen. Friends, if you are feeling powerless with life pulling you in different directions, remember the promise of our Savior, who assured us before he ascended to Heaven, And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. May this promise of Christ give you peace and hope to know that you are not alone. God is with us! In Christ,

KINDERGARTENER SCHOOL OUTFIT MISSION OPPORTUNITY Do you remember your first day of school each September? Were you a little nervous? Did you have new clothes to wear? If so, do you remember how happy you felt in them? We have given Christmas gifts the last several years to some needy preschool students in the Head Start Program. Like otheryears we have an opportunity to give them an outfit in June that they can wear their first day of Kindergarten in September. (Since the average annual income of these families is between $18, and $20, they are usually not able to buy their children new clothes. On June 3 rd people wishing to participate can take a paper apple with a child s name & size from the back of the sanctuary, buy an outfit & put it in a gift bag (if possible, along with a gift receipt just in case the child grows more than anticipated during the summer). We also have each child s name on a paper heart requesting school supplies for them (e.g. pencils, crayons, glue sticks, 2 pocket folders, markers, scissors, etc.). Please attach the apple or heart to the gift bag and return it on either June 10 or June 17. (They will be delivered to the school on June 18 th for distribution the last day of Head Start and be ready to wear in September.) Kohl s, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, etc. have clothing at reasonable prices. Possible suggestions are: Boys shirt & pants (e.g. khaki, navy or jeans) or shorts Girls skirt & top or shorts, pants or jeans & top Happy shopping! God bless you! Sharon Krueger GREEN TEAM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We are looking for anyone who is interested in working at the church one or two hours a week when they are available. Presently the team is down to one full time and one half time worker. The work that we do is grass cutting and trimming, weeding, bush trimming and other minor jobs around the outside of the church. The grass cutting is generally planned for Thursday, Friday or Saturday depending on the weather. Other jobs can be any time a volunteer is available. Please speak with Glen Bucher for your availability and what you like to do, or see John Krueger in church. MISSION STATEMENT Thank you for responding to our request for a selection of a Mission Statement for UMCSO. Based on your feedback, we have decided on the following: Through Jesus, we strive to GROW in our relationship with God through Worship, Prayer and Study. 6 SUNDAY SCHOOL CORNER What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you say to them, Go in peace; keep warm and well fed, but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? James 2:14-16 Such an amazing day of faith in action on May 5 th as 16 youth and 12 adults headed to New York City to bring food, new shirts and socks, and self care items to our brothers and sisters in need. Breakfast was cooked on griddles by the teens. Backpacks, water bottles and fruit were shared with approximately 55 special guests at our assigned street corner. (Many thanks to the members of the congregation who donated items!) Let us keep these people in our prayers. Now we are preparing for our Spring Midnight Run which will be Friday June 8th. We will be putting together the sandwich bags on Friday night at 7pm. The Sunday School youth are so helpful during this prep time, and it is great to have them involved in this mission project. At 9 PM well packed cars will leave for the city to deliver food, clothes and Christ s love to people who are in need. Middle school and High school aged youth are invited to sign up and experience the gift we receive having helped others. June 17th will be our last day of Sunday School. Honors Day is the opportunity for all the classes to be recognized, and participate in our service. We also show appreciation to our Choir members, our Acolytes and others who add to worship during our church service. The middle school class will present another great puppet show! This will be followed by a Church picnic. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be barbecued by our experienced chefs. Please sign up to contribute a salad or dessert, and also so we can estimate the number of hot dogs and burgers we will need. Please plan to come and celebrate another great school year at UMCSO. We thank each parent for bringing the children to class each week. It is important to all of us to teach each one of them about the love of Christ and how to grow in His Way.

We head into summer with great expectations! Despite Sunday School classes taking a break, we hope to continue to see our families during the next few months. Veggie Tale Bible Story movies will be shown in the GP room for our younger students (through grade 4) after children s moments. Our youth group will continue to meet every other week through the summer. Sunday School will resume the Sunday after Labor Day (with pancakes)! We appreciate the continued dedication of our teachers who share the Gospel with our youth. They come each week and not only show Christ s love through words and witness, but also through their actions. Together these teachers organize, and run many events for our kids through the school year. We do it as a team! Often the teachers feel they learn as much as the kids! Please prayerfully consider joining this team. We d love to have you! Your Sunday School Teachers Pictures from May 6 th Sunday School Breakfast Run Feeding the homeless in NYC

CONGRATULATIONS CONFIRMATION CLASS 2018 On Pentecost Sunday, May 20th, we celebrated Confirmation as seven youth proclaimed their faith in Christ as their Savior and affirmed their membership in UMCSO. The youth participated in a two-year confirmation journey which included retreats, classes and service projects designed to help them understand the Christian teachings and put them into practice. Each youth wrote a credo of their beliefs (posted on the bulletin board outside the church office). During the confirmation liturgy, each youth came forward and remembered the waters of their baptism and were anointed as they confirmed their faith with the laying on of hands of their parents and mentor. Please keep these youth in your prayers as they continue to grow in their faith. 10 NOTE FROM OUR LAY LEADER DIANNE BENINCASA You re probably familiar with the story of the widow and her oil. (Take a minute to read the whole story in 2 Kings 4:1-7) Here was a woman who desperately needed God to show up. Her husband was dead, her debts were piling up and men were on their way to sell her sons as slaves. Things looked pretty bad. She goes to the prophet Elisha for help and he asks her a simple question, What do you have in your house? All she had was a little jar of oil. It wasn t much, but God used it to perform a miracle and meet her needs. What got to me about this story is that little phrase in verse five, and she kept pouring. After the first few jars were filled she could have decided that she could get by on that and stopped. But she didn t. Elisha had told her to ask the neighbors for a lot of jars. In faith she kept pouring, and God filled every single one. I am still learning this balance between relying on God and doing my part. I show up with tools in hand, but He does the heavy lifting. God will provide, but there s always something for us to do as well. I think, God invites us into the miracle. I often think of faith as this great, huge thing but I m learning that faith is more often the tiny steps that I take. It s that moment when I stand up and say, OK God, I ll follow you there even when, especially when, it s not where I wanted to go. So I ask you... What are you facing today? Where do you need to keep pouring? Father in Heaven, I know that You are able to do abundantly more than I can imagine or ask for. You have provided for me in the past and I believe that You will not forget me. Be with me in my fear. In the moments when I worry about how I am going to fix things remind me that Your hands are on it. Remind me that I don t need to find all the answers, I just need to focus on listening to You and doing the things that You ve asked me to do today. Thank you that we are in this together. Give me the faith to keep pouring today. In Your name I pray, amen LECTIONARY SCRIPTURE READINGS (for the month of June) Sunday, June 3 Sunday, June 10 Sunday, June 17 (2 nd Sunday After Pentecost) (3 rd Sunday After Pentecost) (4 th Sunday After Pentecost) 1 Samuel 3: Samuel 8:4-20 (11:14-15) 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13 Psalm 139:1-6, Psalm 138 Psalm 20 or 72 2 Corinthians 4: Corinthians 4:13-5:1 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 (11-13) Mark 2:23-3:6 Mark 3: Mark 4:26-34 Sunday, June 24 (5 th Sunday After Pentecost) 1 Samuel 17:(1a, 4-11,19-23) Psalm 9: Corinthians 6:1-13 Mark 4:35-41
