1 KNIGHTLY NEWS Saint Maximilian Kolbe Council No Pismo Beach, CA District 52 Division 111 MAY 2016 VOLUME 23, NUMBER 5 Deputy Grand Knight s Message Dear Brother Knights, I wanted to start off by wishing Grand Knight, Mel Ormonde, a speedy recovery. His stewardship and active participation will be missed until his return. With all the blessings we receive throughout the year, please be mindful of those less fortunate or in need of assistance. As we approach the halfway point in the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, I wanted to take the opportunity to remind the council of the emphasis of this Jubilee to provide the time to come back into right relationship with one another and with God. More information is available at the Vatican and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops websites. We still have several upcoming events including our Poker Run and Car Show in July. Brother Gary is working hard on coordinating this event and any assistance is always appreciated. Our elections will be during the May General Assembly Meeting. I look forward to seeing all of you there to vote and participate in our meeting. Vivat Jesu, Tom Anderson, Deputy Grand Knight District Deputy Message Brother Knights, Elections are coming up. It is a time to participate in the selection of your officers for the coming Columbian year. Their leadership will shape your council for the future. Council elections are required to take place at the regular business meeting held between May 15th and June 15th. Please take time to review your officer nominations below and make this meeting to participate. A change this year will be cards mailed to Financial Secretaries. The cards will list important web pages for members to visit throughout the year, including the Surge for Service web pages. As always, I wish success for your councils in the coming year through your new elected officers. 2 PRAYERS NEEDED Let us always remember to pray for all our Brother Knights and parish members and their loved ones who face health issues. Grand Knight, Mel Ormande, has undergone quadruple bypass surgery and is recovering. He is in the valley with family and will require at least a three-month stay before returning to us. Father Victor is scheduled to return after recovery from surgery. He reports considerable relief from back pain and is looking forward to being able to resume his daily obligations in more physical comfort. Please let us know of Brother Knights and loved ones who face health issues at kofcjac@gmail.com GOD LOVES EACH OF US AS IF THERE WERE ONLY ONE OF US.--St. Augustine KNIGHTS BEAUTIFY In addition to the paving of the back parking lot and the replacement of the Parish Hall steps in back, as well as new retaining walls, the Knights propose the following project. When the Council considers any financial decision over $500, the motion needs to be published in the newsletter prior to the Council taking action. Please note the following from the April Council meeting: Lady of Lourdes Shrine Brother Friar Bao presented a proposal to construct a shrine commemorating Our Lady of Lourdes. The project will consist of replanting the planters in front of the Parish Hall and the installation of statuary. The costs are $1400. The following motion was made by Brother Friar Bao: that the Council consider a donation of $1400 to be used for the proposed Lady of Lourdes Shrine. The motion was seconded by Brother Benvenado. This motion is to be published in keeping with the rules and regulations of the Order and will be presented for action at the May 18 meeting. Be sure to note the beautiful preliminary work already accomplished through the efforts of Brothers Friar Bao, Dan Anderson and wife Sylvia, Ed Dionne and wife Barbara, Gabe Huck and wife Stacy. Mother Day s Breakfast Be sure to honor the ladies in our lives at the Mother s Day Breakfast on Sunday May 8 th after the 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. Masses. As is our custom, breakfast for mothers will be served at no cost. Children up to 12 will be served breakfast for $3. For all others, the breakfast will cost $6. A delicious dinner by Brother Chef Gary and his dedicated crew, the silent auction coordinated by Brother Andy Nunez and wife Sylvia, the camaraderie and fellowship made this event another example of your Knights putting faith into action. FABULOUS FINDS SPRING SALE Cathy McAlister from the Altar/Rosary Society sends her appreciation to any Knight who helped with the annual sale. CEREMONIALS Congratulations to Brothers Father Allen, Friar Boa, Joseph Carotenuti, Ed Dionne and David Wood on attaining their third degrees at a recent ceremonial held in Orcutt hosted by St. Louis de Montfort Knights. 4 Columbia Magazine As usual, there is plenty of good reading beginning with a multi-page spread of news and images of Pope Francis visit to Mexico. The editorial The Power of Mercy is a must read reminding Knights that the Order has sought to bring healing to persecuted Christians through major initiatives of prayer, advocacy and material support. Supreme Knight Carl Anderson underscores the above with a powerful message: There is only one word that adequately, and legally, describes what is happening in the Middle East. That word is genocide. This is a demanding effort to alleviate the unimaginable suffering of fellow Christians. Supreme Knight Anderson encourages all Councils to meet with pastors to discuss how their councils can support parish based youth activities as part of the Knights Strengthening Our Parish initiative. Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori emphasizes that the family is a school of love, a school wherein young people learn how to give of themselves to others and where they learn how to be forgiven and to forgive in turn. Be sure to read the one-page Masculine Spirituality that in part states: Only God can satisfy the incessant masculine longing to do something great, to be a provider, a protector, a hero. As Knights, we have a ready band of brothers as we seek to follow Christ s directive to Come, follow me. He was a carpenter a builder and probably taught Jesus his trade. Through his work, Joseph honored the Father in heaven and continued the act of creation. He lived in dignity. To give workers a patron, the Church turned to Joseph, who had been made the Patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1870 and the model for fathers of families. Joseph was named protector of workers by Pope Benedict XV, and in 1955, the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker on May 1 was proclaimed by Pius the XII. May 15: Saint Isidore the Farmer Isidore was born in Madrid, Spain, and farming was to be his labor, working for the same landowner his whole life. While he walked the fields, plowing, planting, and harvesting, he also prayed. As a hardworking man, Isidore had three great loves: God, his family, and the soil. He and his wife Maria, who is also honored as a saint, proved to all their neighbors that poverty, hard work, and sorrow (their only child died as a little boy) cannot destroy human happiness if we accept them with faith and in union with Christ. Isidore understood clearly that, without soil, the human race cannot exist too long. The insight may explain why he always had such a reverent attitude toward his work as a farmer. May 30: Saint Joan of Arc ( ) The church officially remembers Joan of Arc not as a martyr but as a virgin the Maid of Orleans. Of course, Joan was a martyr, but not in the technical sense. Yes, she died because she did what she thought God wanted her to do. But she was killed for her politics, not for her faith. Pagans did not execute her for refusing to worship their gods. Infidels did not slay her for defying them. Political enemies burned her at the stake for defeating them at war.

The investment portfolio and income sustains a large portion of Knight activities and reminds us all that we work for the common good of our Church, parish, community and fellow Knights and families. Best for a superior ability to meet ongoing insurance obligations with consistently positive statuary earnings Ranked 939 on Fortune 1000 list 2 million life certificates in force As one of only two in the life insurance category, The Knights of Columbus has again been recognized as a 2016 World s Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute ( a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices. The designation fosters a culture of ethics and transparency at all levels of activities and decisions of the Knights of Columbus. LTC Is an Important Piece of the Puzzle There are many financial consultants and retirement authorities who emphasize the need for a long-term care (LTC) product for estate preservation and family protection. While many commercial life insurance companies have gotten out of the long-term care business, the Knights of Columbus considers LTC a very important piece of the family protection puzzle. The Order has been actively offering our members this product for nearly 15 years without a premium increase on current policyholders. Members who wisely purchased an LTC plan from the Knights in 2000 are still paying the same premiums today. Even better, our LTC coverage is backed by the full strength of the Order, which remains rooted in our strong Catholic values. Talk about stability when it counts. If we have not spoken about your need for LTC coverage in your family portfolio, please take some time out of your schedule to meet with me. 6 Become one of a Million Catholics praying the Rosary on the 1st of each month. During this Holy Year of Mercy, let us join Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke in a spiritual crusade to storm Heaven with prayers to dispel confusion and bring Hope to souls and minds throughout America and the world; provide spiritual support in the struggle against the temptations of discouragement; to protect our families and our Faith; to stop the advance of evil in our society; and to flood souls with Grace and Light and Truth. Cardinal Burke reminds all that in any spiritual battle our first and most important armament is prayer and especially the Rosary which is one of our most powerful prayers. Given the gravity of the attacks on human life and on marriage and the family today, we must storm heaven with prayer. If we stand united storming Heaven with our prayers, Our Lord and the Blessed Virgin Mary will be pleased by the chorus of Rosaries in union with the Holy Mass being celebrated by Cardinal Burke on the 1st of every month.
