1 KNIGHTLY NEWS Saint Maximilian Kolbe Council No Pismo Beach, CA District 52 Division 111 JULY 2016 VOLUME 23, NUMBER 7 Happy Birthday, America! Grand Knight s Message Brothers, I would like to start by saying I am honored for your trust and support. This upcoming year is filled with many opportunities for our Council and I look forward to working with all of you to make them great. The installation of newly elected officers will be in July s social. I look forward to seeing you there. The next event this month is our Poker Run and Car Show on July 16. Many brothers have been working diligently to make it successful and carry on the tradition started by our departed brother Jim Miles. Lastly, I would like to remind each of you that our Corporate Mass is the third Sunday of each week at the 10:30 Mass. It is great opportunity for us to gather together to support our parish. Please take the time to read the monthly newsletter. It is filled with a lot of information and a lot of hard work goes into each issue. Vivat Jesus Thomas Anderson Thomas.Anderson@wildlife.ca.gov District Deputy Message Brother Knights, Congratulations to the Officers for the Columbian year. I look forward to working with all of you over the coming year. We have set the Installation of Officers for Pismo #8762 on July 13 at 6 pm and Arroyo Grande #1375 on July 27 at 7 pm. Please join us. 4 KNIGHTS: THE SERVANTS OF MERCY The popular imagination thinks of the historical knights as riding into battles in a variety of colorful uniforms and pennants. In a very informative article in Columbia Magazine, the historical knight is explored as much more than a warrior but as the personification of mercy. Essentially, a knight served as an ideal as he strove to conform himself to the perennial values of justice, truth, and honor. Above all, a knight was willing to sacrifice himself in order to protect the defenseless, the weak, the poor and the innocent. Today, Knights still go into battle against the darkness in our world and are called to be living words of mercy active expressions of God s love. A FEW (hopefully, a lot of) GOOD MEN A five-day Summer Come and See is planned for July at the Arroyo Grande Novitiate (formerly the Friary) for men to meet Friars from all over the United States, witness a Profession of Vows and learn more about the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi and the life of his followers. Do you know of any men who could attend? CATHOLIC CHURCH CAREERS The career ladder in the Catholic Church is very short for the ordained: deacon-priest-bishop-pope. So what are some of the other titles? Cardinal The primary responsibility of a cardinal is to elect a new pope when a pope dies or abdicates the papacy. However, cardinals don t just hang out doing nothing until the Pope dies; they have a variety of other responsibilities. Cardinals form the Roman Curia, primarily a group of administrators to conduct the vast Church business (Cardinal Prefects). The cardinals in the Curia serve as the Pope s righthand men, so to speak. Cardinals who don t work in the Curia are most often responsible for an archdiocese, mostly functioning as an archbishop would ordaining, confirming, and doing the day-to-day business of being chief shepherd of the archdiocese. Cardinals aren t ordained and there s no test to pass to become one. The Pope chooses bishops he thinks are worthy and elevates them to the level of cardinal. Archbishop Becoming a bishop is the third and fullest level of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The first level is the ordination as a deacon; then as a priest, and third a bishop. A bishop oversees a diocese, which is a collection of local parishes; and an archbishop administers an archdiocese which is just a really large diocese. (e. g. San Francisco) Among his many duties, a bishop alone celebrates the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Orders. Each individual bishop has his own authority to run the diocese. He s not an ambassador of the pope but governs the local diocese as an authentic successor of the apostles, just as the pope governs the universal Church as the successor of St. Peter and is the Bishop of Rome. VATICAN EXHIBIT The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library ( is the exclusive West Coast destination for the exquisite Vatican Splendors: A Journey Through Faith and Art. This 10,000 square foot exhibition is one of the largest Vatican collections ever to tour the United States. The collection remains until the end of August. This is a once-in-alifetime opportunity to view the selected pieces from the Vatican collection and includes a cast of St. John Paul II s hand (which guests may grasp).
5 Congratulations to our State Officers for (L to R) Ed Huestis, State Deputy; Steve Bolton, State Warden Elect; George (Skip) Frates, State Advocate Elect; Joe Saliz, State Treasurer Elect; Romeo Quevedo, State Secretary Elect; Bishop Oscar Solis, State Chaplain; Sonny Santa Ines, State Deputy Elect Our Guarantees Set Us Apart Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something precious few other financial products can guarantees. As long as you pay your premiums, the policy proceeds will be there for your beneficiaries should something happen to you. That s peace of mind, and that s what we offer with every product in our portfolio. We guarantee the cash value in your whole life policies will be there. We guarantee the rates on your term insurance. We guarantee our retirement products will provide a stream of income when you need it. On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee that I will offer professional, high-quality service that you would expect from our organization. Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in North America. AM Best has rated the Knights of Columbus A++, Superior for 39 consecutive years. It s a testament to our track record for excellence and security. I would suggest that a principal reason that we were able to achieve those accolades is because we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney by providing life insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights. That commitment is an essential core value of the Knights of Columbus, and our core values permeate all levels of our organization. We pledge to serve our brother Knights, and their families, according to our Golden Rule: In all my professional relationships, I pledge myself to the following rule of conduct: I shall, in light of all conditions surrounding those I serve, render that service which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to myself. Let s talk soon to discuss how our products can bring that peace of mind to you and your family. NOTE Our insurance agent, Kyle Casey, is no longer representing the Knights and has moved to another company. As soon as a replacement is announced, we will have the information in the Knights News.
6 Reverence for Life The California Catholic Conference of Bishops, comprised of Bishops from the two archdioceses and 10 dioceses of California, issued the following statement on the legalization of physician-assisted suicide on June 9, 2016: Every human being possesses inherent dignity, which deserves our respect. Each of us should feel loved, worthy and cared for at every moment of our lives, especially when our earthly journey is nearing its end. What some mistakenly consider a newfound freedom, will inevitably become a duty for others. By allowing doctors to prescribe a lethal dose of drugs to their patients, California is embarking on a dangerous course. This new law will place the disabled, the elderly and other vulnerable people at risk for abuse and mistreatment and will undermine the healing professions venerable commitment to first do no harm. As Catholics, we have been called from the very beginning of our faith to care for the sick. This commitment to care for life at all stages will not be deterred by this law. The Bishops of California and our partners in Catholic health care renew our promise to exceptional healing and compassionate care for those facing diagnosis of a terminal illness. Together, we vow to strengthen our palliative care and other health care services for the chronically and terminally ill, so that no one we treat feels compelled to choose assisted suicide. Through our health care professionals and the care and compassion of all people of goodwill, we will continue to lovingly attend, accompany and care for the terminally ill on their final journey. We have spoken and will continue to speak vigorously against this misguided law. It does not, for example, require a psychological assessment of people requesting assisted suicide. There are also significant concerns from the disability rights community about the lack of safeguards in the law, an absence of reliable information about its use and the growth of suicide in other states where assisted suicide is legal. Pope Francis has challenged us many times to care for those on the margins. In an address last year to medical professionals he addressed our responsibility to care for people at the end of life: Palliative care is an expression of the truly human attitude of taking care of one another, especially of those who suffer. It is a testimony that the human person is always precious, even if marked by illness and old age. Indeed, the person, under any circumstances, is an asset to him/herself and to others and is loved by God. This is why, when their life becomes very fragile and the end of their earthly existence approaches, we feel the responsibility to assist and accompany them in the best way. Knights of Columbus 800 Bello St. Pismo Beach, CA We echo this commitment of our faith and take to heart the words of St. John Paul II: respect, protect, love and serve life, every human life! Only in this direction will you find justice, development, true freedom, peace and happiness! Mailing Address: P.O.
