March 2013 Hollywood Knights Volume 5, Issue 3 Nestled in Hollywood Park, Sacramento MOTHER OF THE CIVILIZATION OF LOVE By Carl A. Anderson, Supreme Knight For nearly 500 years, millions of people have shown great devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, struck by her words to Juan Diego, Am I not your Mother? From her first appearance at Tepeyac in 1531, she has bestowed on humanity a tender motherly concern, and this remains an important part of her message today. If we approach Our Lady of Guadalupe as our mother, then she is not only a mother to us, she is a mother to everyone. That means that we are all one family, despite our different countries and cultures. Blessed John Paul II referred to this fact when he wrote in Ecclesia in America: The appearance of Mary to the native Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac in 1531 had a decisive effect on evangelization. Its influence greatly overflows the boundaries of Mexico, spreading to the whole Continent. America, which historically has been, and still is, a melting-pot of peoples, has recognized in the mestiza face of the Virgin of Tepeyac, in Blessed Mary of Guadalupe, an impressive example of a perfectly inculturated evangelization. Consequently, not only in Central and South America, but in North America as well, the Virgin of Guadalupe is venerated as Queen of all America. He also wrote that the renewal of the Church in America will not be possible without the active presence of the laity. Therefore, they are largely responsible for the future of the Church. So we must ask ourselves, what is the meaning of Our Lady of Guadalupe today? Does she play the same role in our countries history as she has for nearly 500 years? How do we respond to the great commandment of our Lord love our neighbor as our self? This is the real message of Our Lady of Guadalupe s motherly concern for each of us that each person is actually a member of our family. And as Pope Benedict XVI told us in his first encyclical Deus Caritas Est (God is Love): In a family no member must go hungry or lack the necessities of life. With this truth in mind, the Knights of Columbus has embarked on a pilgrimage with Our Lady of Guadalupe, bearing her image from council to council, from parish to parish, to spread her message and her love. Through this Marian Prayer Program, we have a chance to gather as a family before the mother of humanity and offer our prayers and intentions. I know that this will be a time of grace for all our members and their families, and I pray that Our Lady of Guadalupe will bring us closer together as an Order, as a Church, as a community and as a world in need of her words of peace and unity. 2 Page 2 Brothers, St. Robert Parish is celebrating the Icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe this weekend, March 2-3, and the Knights of Columbus are proud to co-host the Icon with the church. This Icon was blessed by Pope Benedict XVI in This Icon was one of over a 100 that were blessed by our Holy Father at the Vatican. Eleven of these Icons were viewed by over 80,000 Catholics at the Los Angeles Coliseum on August, 5, The council will be serving coffee and donuts after the 8:00 and 10:00 am masses on Sunday. Please come out and support your council. The Knights of Columbus devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe reached a milestone with the chartering of their first Mexican council as the Guadalupe Council in Mexico City in Since then, the Knights have done much to spread Our Lady s message, including co-sponsoring a U.S. tour of the Archdiocese s tilma relic in The Knights also held their first-ever International Marian Congress on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 2009, which concluded with the 22,000 person Guadalupe Festival in Phoenix, Arizona. I would like to welcome our newest brother to the council, Brother Larry Wager. Brother Wager took Hollywood Knights Grand Knight s Report his 1st Degree last Friday and will be a great addition to the council. Our next big event is the St. Patrick s Dinner Dance which will be held on Saturday, March 16th in the St. Robert Parish Hall. We will working side-by-side with our brothers from KofC Council #3668 to make this a memorable event. This will be the fourth co-council event. We need to get the word out and fill the gym. The event flyer is included in this edition. Your help will be needed to make this a successful event and please try to sell some tickets and provide a raffle prize. Your WFS Ed Rogala and I both have tickets for you to sell. The council wishes the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, a long and healthy life as he resides at the Castle Gandolfo, south of Rome. We need to pray for the Conclave of Cardinals in their difficult decision in selecting a new Pope to replace Benedict in these trying times. The council has decided to take advantage of our new growing partnership with St. Robert School by hosting a few Spaghetti Dinners this year, so please attend our meetings and be a part of the planning efforts for these events. Please mark your calendars for up coming meetings and events which are listed below for the month of March Our next big event will be the St. Patty s Day Dinner/Dance on March 16th. Save these dates for upcoming events for the month of March: Thursday, March 14th -Officer s Meeting. Saturday, March 16th St. Patrick s Day Dinner / Dance. Thursday, March 28th-General Business Meeting. One of our founding brothers, Jack Sapnaro has been battling failing health for quite some time now. Please keep Jack in your thoughts and prayers for his quick recovery. God would not put burdens on us if he thought we could not carry them VIVAT JESUS! Grand Knight

Hollywood Knights Page 3 Insurance Corner LTC IS AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF THE PUZZLE There are many financial consultants and retirement authorities who emphasize the need for a long-term care (LTC) product for estate preservation and family protection as you get near or attain the age of 60. While many commercial life insurance companies have gotten out of the long-term care business, the Knights of Columbus considers LTC a very important piece of the family protection puzzle. The Order has been actively offering our members this product for nearly 15 years without a single premium increase on current policyholders. Members who wisely purchased their LTC plans from the Order in 2000 are still paying the same premiums today. Even better, our LTC coverage is backed by the full strength of the Order, which remains rooted in our strong Catholic values. This is stability when it counts. If we have not spoken about your need for LTC coverage in your family portfolio, please take some time out of your schedule to meet with me. Remember, long-term care policies are purchased with your health, and you most likely will never be any healthier than you are today. Fraternally yours, Justin Tanjuaquio, FICF (916) CA LIC 0C46842 justin.tanjuaquio@kofc.org Please use these links to gain additional knowledge about the Knights of Columbus organization

Hollywood Knights Page 5 March Monthly Prayer The month of March is dedicated to Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the foster father of Jesus. Fathers, in particular, should cultivate devotion to Saint Joseph, whom God Himself chose to care for His Son. These prayers can be incorporated into our daily prayers during this month. Statue of Saint Joseph in the Lourdes Grotto, Saint Mary Oratory, Rockford, Illinois. (Photo Scott P. Richert) Novena to Saint Joseph Glorious St. Joseph, foster-father and protector of Jesus Christ! To you I raise my heart and my hands to implore your powerful intercession. Please obtain for me from the kind Heart of Jesus the help and the graces necessary for my spiritual and temporal welfare. I ask particularly for the grace of a happy death and the special favor I now implore. [Mention your request here.] Guardian of the Word Incarnate, I feel animated with confidence that your prayers in my behalf will be graciously heard before the throne of God. V. O glorious St. Joseph, through the love you bear to Jesus Christ, and for the glory of His Name. R. Hear my prayers and obtain my petitions. Amen. Dolan : We are sad about his resignation but grateful for his eight-year leadership The President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a statement commenting on Benedict XVI s resignation By MAURO PIANTA ROME The Holy Father brought the tender heart of a pastor, the incisive mind of a scholar and the confidence of a soul united with His God in all he did. His resignation is but another sign of his great care for the Church. We are sad that he will be resigning but grateful for his eight years of selfless leadership as successor of St. Peter. Timothy Dolan, whom many call the American Pope, has issued a statement with some personal reflections on Benedict XVI s resignation. The leader of the U.S. Episcopate also wrote: The occasion of his resignation stands as an important moment in our lives as citizens of the world. Our experience impels us to thank God for the gift of Pope Benedict. Our hope impels us to pray that the College of Cardinals under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit choose a worthy successor to meet the challenges present in today s world. According to Vatican correspondents, 62 year old Dolan is well aware of the shoes Benedict XVI s successor will have to fill. Those who met him, heard him speak and read his clear, profound writings found themselves moved and changed. The Vatican Insider Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Parthenogenesis is the term used to describe the process by which certain animals are able to reproduce themselves in successive female generations without intervention of a male of the species. At least one species of lizard is known to do so. The word "Checkmate" in chess comes from the Persian phrase "Shah Mat", which means "the king is dead". Faithful Funnies Spiritual Construction An old nun who was living in a convent next to a construction site noticed the coarse language of the workers and decided to spend some time with them to correct their ways. She decided she would take her lunch and sit with them, so she put her sandwich in a brown bag and walked over to the spot where the men were eating. Sporting a big smile, she walked up to the group and asked, "Any of you men know Jesus Christ?" They shook their heads and looked at each other, very confused. Then, one of the workers looked up into the steelworks and yelled out, "Anybody up there know Jesus Christ?" One of the steelworkers yelled back down, "Why?" The worker yelled back, " 'Cause his mom's here with his lunch." Cast the First Stone Jesus was walking along one day, when He came upon a group of people surrounding a lady of ill repute. It was obvious that the crowd was preparing to stone her, so Jesus made His now-famous statement, "Let the person who has no sin cast the first stone." The crowd was shamed and one by one began to turn away. All of a sudden, a lovely little woman made her way through the crowd. Finally getting to the front, she tossed a pebble towards the woman. Jesus looks over and says, "I really hate it when you do that, Mom."

Hollywood Knights Page 7 Every Catholic Is Called To Encourage Vocations, Pope Says VATICAN CITY, February 10 (CNA/EWTN News) The vitality of the Church depends on individual Catholics fostering vocations in their homes and parishes, the Pope says in his annual message for the May 15 World Day of Prayer for Vocations. It is essential that every local Church become more sensitive and attentive to the pastoral care of vocations, the Pope writes in his new statement issued by the Vatican on Feb. 10. He speaks of the role of the Church in helping children and young people to grow in a real friendship with Jesus, to increase their familiarity with the Scriptures, to understand the truth of his message and to be generous in creating relationships with others. The theme of this year s prayer for vocations day is Proposing Vocations in the Local Church. The Pope says this means having the courage, through an attentive and suitable concern for vocations, to point out this challenging way of following Christ which, because it is so rich in meaning, is capable of engaging the whole of one s life. Answering Jesus call of Follow me! is no less challenging today than it was for the disciples 2,000 years ago, says the Pope. It means learning to keep our gaze fixed on Jesus, growing close to him, listening to his word and encountering him in the sacraments and learning to conform our will to his. The Church is called to protect and love the gift of God s call to people to share in his mission and serve as ordained ministers and consecrated religious, he says. Particularly in these times, when the voice of the Lord seems to be drowned out by other voices and his invitation to follow him by the gift of one s own life may seem too difficult, every Christian community, every member of the Church, needs to consciously feel responsible for promoting vocations. According to a report from the U.S. bishops, there are currently 5,131 men enrolled in the U.S. seminaries. The number is up from 4,973 in The Pope urges the faithful to take every opportunity to develop vocations. Every moment in Church community life from catechesis to prayer and pilgrimages can be a precious opportunity for awakening in the people of God a sense of belonging to the Church and of responsibility for answering the call to priesthood and to religious life by a free and informed decision, he says. The ability to foster vocations, Pope Benedict concludes, is a hallmark of the vitality of a local Church. Social Media Stay connected with the Knights of Columbus through constant updates.
