From the pastor: This has been an exciting time for me as I am getting settled into Walnut Grove. Thank you all so much for your warm welcome as I begin to learn some names and find my way around. I have already visited with several of you and look forward to seeing more of the congregation soon. I plan to keep office hours Monday through Thursday mornings and I invite you to drop in to talk. I will do most of my visitation in the afternoons but will call before I drop in. I hope that you will initiate a visit by calling me and inviting me over. I do lunch and supper real well! Some of you have visited me at the parsonage. Thank you so much for your assistance in moving in and for all the great food you brought. You met my cat, Sophie, who loves the screened in porch. I hope you will meet my husband Burnie soon. He is getting settled in to Carillon Assisted Living in Hillsborough. He appreciates your visits there as well. Walnut Grove has a great history and reputation not only in the community but also throughout the North Carolina Conference. It is an honor to have been appointed here to serve you as your pastor. I hope and pray that my calling to serve the Lord in ministry will be fulfilled through my ministry with you. So as our ministry here at Walnut Grove gets underway, I do ask for your prayers. Pray for your church. And pray that I may be the best pastor possible for you. My greatest desire is to honor my Lord and Savior through my service to His Church and to the people of Walnut Grove. 2 United Methodist Women Ruth Robinson, Vice-President I m sitting here today thinking about the dog days of summer, July and August, which are normally the hottest days of the year. How did people sleep in the old days during those months? You were lucky to have a fan and air-conditioning was something for the future. Surely work was accomplished much slower and a full day of work was a major accomplishment. However, whether it is dog days or cool days, God s work continues as we are all put on this earth for a purpose just as Jesus sent out his disciples to share his message. With purpose in mind, at the last United Methodist Women meeting, the group put together 50 health kits which will be delivered to what was formerly the MERCI Center is now 3MC (Managed by the Conference United Methodist Men). Preparing these kits gave the group the opportunity to interact with Pastor Gayla and see our new Pastor s passion for mission work. In regard to the new UMW Corridor District, all officers have been appointed and our first meetings have been scheduled. These include the Annual Meeting on Sunday, October 21 at Glendale Heights UMC, 908 Leon Street in Durham and Local Officer Training Saturday, November 10 at First UMC, 303 N Main Street in Graham. The local officers attend the training to learn valuable information and to become acquainted with other members of the district. As always, we invite you to attend our local UMW meetings. The next meeting will be held in the Walnut Grove fellowship hall on Tuesday, September 4th at 7:00 pm. The program will be presented by Ruby Tilley and is the Pledge Service. I d like to close with something I read recently that I thought was cute. Yesterday is history Tomorrow a mystery Today is a gift That s why it s called the present Family Ministries: 8/19/ Family cookout at Lake Michael Park- we have reserved the BIG cover and plan to have a cookout and just some fun around the park, play area beside the covered picnic tables and you can rent (very cheap) paddle boats, you can fish, and of course throw Frisbee, football, baseball, and just have fun fellowshipping with each other. 3 M ARY MART H A BUSY LADIES Mary Martha Busy Ladies are Busy, Busy, Busy On June 12, the Ladies hosted the Granddaughter Tea with 38 in attendance. The Tea was held at the Inn at Teardrop in Hillsborough. Chairpersons were Ann Marie Lalumia and Jean Mangum. The granddaughters enjoyed Ms. Vera Walker who spoke on how life was when she was young. They also enjoyed a balloon man who made requested creations from balloons. Special thanks to Tom Roberts for inviting us to use the Inn at Teardrop. On June19, the Vacation Bible School meal was hosted by the Mary Martha Busy Ladies. Sloppy Joes were the main menu item for the supper. Chairpersons were Madora Davis and Jane Sparks. On June 26, the Grandson s Outing was held at Eno River State Park with 26 in attendance. Hotdogs were served with all the trimmings. Again, the balloon man came and made creations from balloons for the boys. The chairpersons for this event were Madora Davis and Carol Gerbracht. On July 10, the Ladies hosted the Ice Cream Social. There were at least 9 churns going at the same time. After the light supper and ice cream then a program was provided by the NC Humanities Council Road Scholar program. Mr. John Santa s program was entitled The Culture of Bluegrass Music in North Carolina: My Life as an Accidental Bluegrass Musician. He presented the origins of bluegrass and played some instruments and sang some original songs that he wrote. There were between people present. The ladies have placed flowers in the church honoring three of the five oldest members of our church. In May we honored Mrs. Ruth Alliger. In June we honored Mrs. Era Carr and Mrs. Lottie Lynch. On August 14, the Mary Martha Busy Ladies will travel to Roxboro for lunch and visiting nursing homes. For information about attending the Mary Martha Busy Ladies group, phone Madora Davis at or Jane Sparks at The group meets every second Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall for a covered dish lunch at 11:45 unless previously announced and/or printed in the bulletin. Worth Sharing The following message was posted on Facebook on Friday the 13th from Ruth Robinson. This is well worth sharing. It reminds us of how the unexpected kindnesses are appreciated. "I had three unexpected acts of kindness today. I was at the doctor's office and trying to put my feet on my scooter and a lady walked over and put my feet up on the scooter. Next I was leaving the movies and was trying to get on my scooter from the chair and an unknown man just stopped and picked me up and put me on the scooter without saying a word. Lastly, I was loading my scooter in the van and a young man stopped and volunteered to help. Who says Friday the 13th is unlucky?" These helpers are blessings from God for a special lady.

4 Youth News Appalachia Service Project ASP teams returned with all of their digits, and an appreciation for the comforts of home. Thanks to all of you for supporting the Appalachia Service Project. Twenty of us travelled to Tennessee where we stayed for a week at Cherokee United Methodist Church. With your help, we were able to improve the living conditions for two families by purchasing much needed supplies to complete all of the work they needed done. We removed decomposed flooring and laid firm and secure sub-flooring and linoleum, took away decayed and disintegrating stairs and porches and replaced them with well built, safe ones. These repairs went towards making these homes warmer, safer, and drier, which is what ASP is all about! The gratitude and appreciation our families demonstrated, the faith they shared and the hardships they endured made for an amazing experience for those of us who were lucky enough to serve them. In addition, the youth who travelled with us gained valuable experience and were gifted with God s graces in too many ways to describe. ASP continues to transform the lives of the families we serve and the volunteers. Youth interested in going with us in 2013 should talk to me or Lou Rutledge! 5 Congratulations Graduates 2012!! Audiovisual Assistant Needed There continues to be a HUGE need for persons to help with sound and projection at both services. We need persons to work the sound board and run the projection program (currently ProPresenter on the Mac laptop) at the 8:30 service. At the 11:00 service, we need a person to primarily run the sound board. If you are interested in serving in this way, contact Roger or Leigh McFalls at Greetings from the Young Adults Ministry (YAM) The young adults meet on Sundays evening during the school year from 6-7pm in the modular unit. YAM is guided by scripture and prayer as we seek to help each other grow together in faith, to learn from one another, to live and grow in fellowship and friendship as well as to get closer to our God. This summer, YAM is not meeting weekly (we ll resume on September 9); However, we re meeting monthly for an evening of fun activity. On Friday June 15, the young adults went bowling at Palace Point in Roxboro and on Friday July 13, we had a pool party and cookout at home of Leigh& Roger Mcfalls. 6 Walnut Grove Crafters to Meet By Brenda Berry A card made by one of our crafters. Dates for Crafting for 2012 July 27 July 28 August 24 August 25 September 21 September 22 (Scrap Pink for Relay for Life) October 27 October 26 November 30 December 1 December 28 December 29 Basic setup for each Walnut Grove Crafting Days The fun will begin on Friday at 1 PM until midnight. On Saturday morning we will start anew at 9:00 AM 6:00 PM. Since we craft in the Fellowship Hall, we, also, are responsible for setting up the chairs for Sunday morning 8:30 AM Service. Each person is asked to bring a snack to share on Friday night; a covered dish to share for lunch on Saturday. Supper is on your own on Friday night as is breakfast on Saturday morning. You do not have to commit to the entire weekend. Come craft for as long as you like! So mark your calendars, bring a friend, and come join the fellowship and fun as we create memories for our families and friends through the various crafts each of us select to do. Looking forward to seeing you there! Walnut Grove Crafters to sponsor Craft Pink for Walnut Grove Relay for Life Team Plans are being formulated for the next Craft Pink Weekend at Walnut Grove. On September 21 and September 22, the Walnut Grove Crafters will sponsor our 3 4th Annual Scrap Pink weekend. We will begin on Friday at noon until about midnight. Saturday we will start anew at 8:30 AM. Bring your favorite craft and join in the fun. We are requesting that everyone wear pink in order to celebrate and remember those who have or had cancer that are near and dear to our hearts. We will be crafting as well as having some extra activities. This year many of our crafters are donating crafted items for sale on Friday and Saturday as well as cakes, candies, pies and other baked goods. All of the proceeds will be given to the Relay for Life team of Walnut Grove. On Saturday morning at 7:30 AM 9:30 AM, we are planning a Breakfast of Country Ham, Eggs, Redeye gravy, and biscuits. The price for breakfast is a donation to the Relay for Life team of Walnut Grove UMC. Mark your calendars for this event and come have breakfast with us September 22. 7 Prayers and Squares Ministry of Walnut Grove By Brenda Berry Prayers and Squares Ministry of Walnut Grove, Chapter 913 Updates: As of July 15 th Prayers and Squares has received 69 requests for prayer quilts since January 1, The quilts have traveled as far away as Peru, South America, Texas, Maryland, Arizona, South Carolina, and from the mountains to the coast of North Carolina. God has blessed us in so many ways. If you know of someone who needs one of our prayer quilts and that person would like a quilt, contact any of us on the committee. When I gave the quilt to Aunt Clarice and explained what each knot meant, the joy and gratitude was obvious. She continually moved her fingers from knot to knot. Thank you so much for your support and your prayers for the people who need our prayers and for those who make the quilts. Many of you have asked who participates in the Prayers and Squares Ministry of Walnut Grove. The entire church is involved because of the prayers that you pray for the individuals who need our prayers. We are so blest to have everyone who says a prayer and ties a knot in the quilts for each individual who needs our prayers. Hillsborough United Methodist Church and Walnut Grove worked as partners on a quilt with both churches having opportunities to pray and tie knots. The Prayers and Squares Quilt Ministry are so excited to have you and the following people that make this ministry possible. Sewing prayer quilts are Sarah Clayton, Jeanne Crabtree, Iris Tilley, Ginger Terry, Beverly Roberts, Nita Trembly, Ruby Tilley, Peggy Mustian, Ashley Conway, and Brenda Berry. There are many other helping hands that help sort fabric, sew in the threads for the knots, and press the fabric. They are Emma Beckham, Faydean Cannada, Barbara Parker, Judy Parker, Louanne Bledsoe, and Jane Clapp. Contact and meeting times: The Prayers and Squares members meet in the Modular Unit at the church on lst and 3 rd Thursdays from 6 PM until 10 PM to sew, cut out quilts, tie quilts and sew on labels. We, also, meet every month during the Walnut Grove Crafters to sew or tie quilts. Prayers & Squares, the Prayer Quilt Ministry, began in 1992 at Hope United Methodist Church in San Diego, California. Since then the ministry has expanded to include chapters in churches of many different denominations across the world. Walnut Grove Prayers & Squares Ministry, Chapter 913, began in September, 2009 by members of the Walnut Grove Crafters.

8 Ministry Team Update Thanks to the 72 individuals who have completed the Accepting Christ s Call forms thus far. The results of these have been tabulated and are being distributed into the various work areas for responses. From a statistical perspective, the most popular areas were Help with Harvest Festival, Attend Sunday School, and Invite a friend to Church. For those areas where a follow up is needed, the Ministry Team has set a goal that all those who have completed a form will be contacted regarding their responses by our September meeting. If you would still like to complete a form, contact the Church office or Wesley Tilley to get plugged in. If you have questions about any ministry opportunity or ideas for ministries not covered, contact the Work Area chairpersons that were listed on the form. A particular emphasis for Ministry Team this year is the re-emphasis of the Witness work area. Ashley Conway and Margaret-Ann Dow are the chairs of this area and will be holding a kickoff event in August. If you are interested in this area, contact either of them to get involved. What is the Dream Team Up To? OK our Dream Team doesn't have Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson...but we have a lot of great talent and we have been busy dreaming up the future of Walnut Grove UMC. We have been meeting once a month and our meetings have focused on a review of our Church and all the ways that God is leading us as a congregation. We started our process by brainstorming and creating a wish list of items we'd like to personally see incorporated or expanded in our Church. We agreed that we should frame our work with our mandate "Go and Make Disciples." We have been working through our own ideas of what that mandate means and we seek to use those ideas to help us discern ways that our Church can be made better and more aligned with God's mission. We have enlisted the services of Chris Harman. Chris is Director of Christian Formation in our Conference. Chris is coaching the Dream Team through its process and helping it better understand the areas of our Church that need attention. As part of our process we have interviewed a variety of our Church members to better gauge the different interests and opinions about the future of our Church. We hope to use this information along with other input from our Conference to develop an action plan to present to the congregation. Some parts of the plan will be long term goals, while other elements will be items we can initiate here and now. Alan Campbell Sisters in Christ IV it As we are getting closer to our event (August 3 5, 2012) we wish to ask you to keep praying for us as we are getting on up in miles for our training. 9 NOTES from the Music Ministry by Leigh McFalls, Music Director LATE SUMMER EDITION As we approach the last months of summer, most of us are finishing vacations, preparing to return to school, looking toward the fall AND some COOLER weather...which means A NEW CHOIR YEAR!! New music in the works for you and it s just around the corner. SUMMER MUSIC The Sanctuary Choir is still enjoying some R and R through the month of August. We will resume meeting every week in September. The schedule for August is as follows: AUGUST Sanctuary Choir August 1 August 8 - NO PRACTICE August 15 NO PRACTICE August 22 August 29 The Praise Team will be enjoying just a little R and R during August and continue to rehearse on every Thursday at 7:00pm. In September, we will be back in sync every week. Their schedule for August is as follows: AUGUST Praise Team August 2 (double practice) August 9 - NO PRACTICE August 16 August 23 August 30 RIDGECREST WORSHIP WEEK 2012 A couple of us attended a week-long music and worship conference at Ridgecrest Assembly near Black Mountain (with the Baptists). The Worship Leader for the week was Travis Cottrell and the speaker was his pastor, Ben Mandrell (probably no relation to Barbara). Travis writes and publishes many of the songs we sing at the 8:30 service and one or two at the 11:00. These include In Christ Alone, Jesus Saves, and Just As I Am, to name a few. Pastor Ben spoke to all of the music and worship leaders in attendance of 3 decisions we need to make for ourselves in our own life and ministry. They are as follows: I will not allow fear to prevent me from following God. I will invest my life in younger leaders. I will cultivate joy in my life and in my ministry. LOOKING TO THE FALL As the summer heat of August sets in, I am the midst of listening and choosing special music for Thanksgiving and Christmas. (You ve heard of Christmas in July, right?) In September, rehearsals will begin for these special days. And, as of this printing, I ve narrowed the choices down to two for Christmas. So, with all of this in mind, I would like to invite those of you who have been thinking about singing with us to coming and singing with us. We really do have a great time! 10 The ASP Team is Back!! After a week in Johnson City, Tennessee, the ASP team has returned from a week of hard, but rewarding work. We have all the fingers and toes we had when we left, but we also have a deeper understanding of ourselves, our talents, and the value of helping others. It is so amazing to see our enthusiastic youth grow by leaps and bounds in one short week. And let me say, this group was a joy! To spite the pouring rain, there was not a single whine or even sideways glance. When there was something that needed to be done, several would jump at it with both feet! And from all the adults on the trip, thanks to the youth for letting us feel young again. There is nothing like hanging around teenagers and young adults to make the years disappear, giving us somewhat older folks a new lease on life. Thanks guys!! I also want to take a moment to thank the entire congregation for their support in making this endeavor possible for the past 8 years. I hope you will see your way to continuing that support for many years to come. And to let you know the difference you made in several lives, let me take a moment to tell you some of what we were able to do. Our three teams each had their own project to tackle and they did so with gusto! One team worked on both bathroom repairs and kitchen cabinets. Part of their repairs included removing a water heater from the bathroom. We found out that the owner had not had hot water in over a year but ASP did not have funds to replace it. Through your generosity, we had enough funds to buy one for her so she would again have hot water that did not come from a pot on the stove! The other two teams had projects on the same site; one was an inside job and the other outside. The team inside had to remove the floor in the hall, repair floor joists, and then lay new underlayment and lauan, finishing with vinyl tile. And if that wasn t enough, they then proceeded to move the furniture out of the boys room and lay lauan and new tile there as well. The 4 year old was so excited to have his new floor and mom was glad to feel like they wouldn t fall through the hall floor! While working on the floors, the team overheard the couple discussing the fact that they needed to talk to the power company. Again through your generosity, we were able to scrape together extra funds to take to the electric company and bring their account up to date and even leave a little credit balance. The second team was tasked with removing a rotten front deck and replacing it, in the pouring rain. We went right to work getting started on the demolition and rebuilding. When we walked around to the back to check on the team inside, we noticed that the back deck was in worse shape. We were able to take our extra funds to pay for the supplies to replace that deck as well since ASP did not have the funds to cover another deck. So, our team built two decks, not just one. This young couple and their little family were overwhelmed and very grateful. I don t think they will soon forget us and I do think they will help others when they get back on their feet. We plan to keep in touch to continue to encourage them. Lou Rutledge What better Way to Spend the Summer!! Our own, Kasi Wahlers, is still serving on staff with ASP for the summer!
