Ashes will be placed on our forehead as a reminder of our need to turn to the Lord who alone transforms dust and ashes into life. I am aware that many of you give something up for Lent as part of your spiritual practice. This is a good thing to do because such practice is a form of fasting and abstinence. By giving up something, sweets or alcohol for instance, you fast from the normal comforts you provide your body. Be aware, however, that this practice of giving something up for Lent is to be coupled with prayer and almsgiving or works of charity. Otherwise, it can easily turn into a program of dieting. But with prayer and almsgiving, fasting and abstinence help us get into the mindset of repentance so that we may nourish an attitude of openness and surrender to God. The Lenten Season is meant to be a desert experience where the usual securities and luxuries of life are not present. Life in the desert can make you annoying and irritable. Many of us would not want to spend our days in the desert. So we are somehow forced to go there every year, and in having this experience, we learn to live not by bread alone but from every word that comes from the mouth of God. We learn to give up control and to realize the sufficiency of God s grace in our lives. During the Season of Lent, there are spiritually enriching events in our parish. I would like to direct your attention to the following: 1) Lenten Mission from February that is geared for families; 2) the Parish Penance Service on Thursday, March 15th; 3) the praying of the Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings. Please take note of them and make a determined effort to attend them. I pray that you will acquire the right mindset as you begin the Season of Lent. May God fill you with his grace during this season of repentance! We invite and welcome children ages kindergarten through grade 4 to hear the Word of God from the Children s Lectionary. For this to be offered every Sunday, more leaders are needed. RCIA (adapted for children and youth) The RCIA process for children is in need for an added team member to assist with the parent/child sessions and other planned celebrations. The SOS for the Homeless (Sandwiches on Sunday for the Homeless) Ministry prepares sack lunches for the Bristow Center and the Magnificat House. Each one of these charities offer safe environments for adults that are struggling with mental illness and addictions. They are both located on Caroline Street in the downtown area. We need volunteers for making lunches on Sunday and drivers to deliver the lunches on Monday mornings between 10-10:30 a.m. It is about a 1.5-hour commitment. SOS for the Homeless Ministry If you are interested in supporting this ministry financially, please drop donations at the office or contact Colleen Bryse at (713) or cbryse@saintcecilia.org. Loving Embrace is a Catholic educational support group for couples who have endured or are presently enduring the pain and suffering of infertility. The group provides support for coping with infertility and explores resources, methods, and options that are morally faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church. The Gathering Place Lorrie Dawlearn Tom Breaux ext. 210 The Gathering Place is a stimulating, loving and fun environment where volunteers offer interactive and affirming activities designed for members of the congregation and community who suffer with memory loss. The program is free. The Gathering Place is a partnership between St. Cecilia and Interfaith CarePartners and is one of 58 participating congregations that offer 3 1/2 hours of respite from the challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia while they enjoy games, crafts, entertainment lunch and other fun activities. Caregivers may choose to use this opportunity for respite, or may opt to participate along with their care partner.
