After much prayer and discussion, the 10 parishioners who comprised the committee this year decided to disperse funds to sister parishes who were harmed by Hurricane Harvey. We distributed $80,000 to eight parishes which the archdiocese identified as needing assistance beyond what insurance and archdiocesan funds could provide. After visiting each parish to verify the need, the committee presented their recommendations to Fr. Francis, who approved them. Photos of the challenges faced by each parish will be shown after the 7:30, 9, and 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. Masses on August 19. And, the choir from St. Benedict the Abbott will be joining us to sing at our 11 a.m. Mass that day in gratitude. Please keep these parishes in your prayers as they strive to rebuild. Below are the parishes we assisted and how they will use the money. 1. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel - Sound system, liturgical books and hymnals 2. St. Augustine - Electrical station 3. St. Benedict the Abbott Rebuild rectory, add gates to improve campus security 4. St. Christopher Rectory and school roof and ceiling repair 5. St. Francis of Assis - Marian altar for chapel, electric piano, photocopier 6. St. Gregory the Great - Classroom interior repairs, furnishings for rectory 7. St. Joseph Baytown Resealing school windows 8. 5 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 12, 2018 Page 5 SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY INTO HEAVEN A Holy Day of Obligation Mass Schedule Wednesday, August 15 In English - 8:15 am (with St. Cecilia Catholic School), 12:15 pm & 5:30 pm En español 7:00 pm Holy Day of Obligation Training for NEW Extra-ordinary Ministers of the Eucharist has been scheduled, and a number of opportunities to attend will be offered. These lay ministers assist the regular ministers of the Eucharist (the ordained) with the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist to the faithful at Mass, as well as those in the hospital or the homebound. The requirements for serving as an EMHC are: Training for NEW Extra-ordinary Ministers of the Eucharist 18 years of age or a senior in high school. A fully initiated Catholic. Living a life in communion with the teachings of the Catholic Church. If married, must be a Catholic mariage. Forms are on our website. Please remember that youth must register each year. There will be a mandatory meeting for ALL parents on Tuesday, August 21st at 9 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. in the Youth Room. You can choose which meeting works best for you. At this meeting you will get to meet the Youth Ministers, hear more about the ministry, and get your questions answered. Mandatory Parents Meeting Tuesday August 21st Youth Room 9 am or 6:30 pm - Please Note: Confirmation Preparation works within the Life Teen ministry but has separate meetings and expectations for youth during the immediate preparation year for the sacrament of Confirmation. Militia Mariae Kickoff Saturday August 25th 6 pm - 10 pm Militia Mariae is for those Confirmed Juniors and Seniors that are ready to help lead at St. Cecilia! There are three characteristics that we focus on for these young men and women to learn to incorporate into their lives: SERVANT, LEADER, & DIS- CIPLE. We ask that they apply to be in Militia Mariae and register for Life Teen. It is a great opportunity for Confirmed Youth to start/continue serving in the Church. Freshmen Retreat October 12-14, Pine Cove Columbus, TX The freshmen retreat (October 12-14) is AWESOME! The retreat theme is Psalm 139 and the retreat is meant to build up the youth as they begin this new chapter in high school! The cost is $135 and scholarships are available for the retreat. 10 Page 10 August 12, 2018 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Loving Embrace Shannon Lassen We meet on the third Thursday of each month from 7:30-9 p.m. The format of our meetings changes monthly, rotating between couples dinner, ladies dinner, and couples discussion. Loving Embrace is a Catholic educational support group for couples who have endured or are presently enduring the pain and suffering of infertility. The group provides support for coping with infertility and explores resources, methods, and options that are morally faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church. The Gathering Place Lorrie Dawlearn Tom Breaux ext. 210 The Gathering Place is a stimulating, loving and fun environment where volunteers offer interactive and affirming activities designed for members of the congregation and community who suffer with memory loss. The program is free. The Gathering Place is a partnership between St. Cecilia and Interfaith CarePartners and is one of 58 participating congregations that offer 3 1/2 hours of respite from the challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia while they enjoy games, crafts, entertainment, lunch and other fun activities. Caregivers may choose to use this opportunity for respite, or may opt to participate along with their care partner.
