2 Dear Parishioners, This Thursday, November 1, we celebrate the feast of All Saints. It is a holy day of obligation. Our Mass schedule can be found on page 5 of this week s bulletin. This is a feast where we celebrate all those who are in heaven enjoying the fullness of life with the Lord as saints. This is the vocation of every person - to be saints - to be friends with God. As a Church, we celebrate certain days for those who have been canonized, such as St. Theresa, St. Patrick, St. John the Baptist, and all the other big names. The feast of All Saints is for all the everyday men and women who lived a life that was faithful in the ways of the Lord. These are people such as mom and dad, grandparents, friends, and neighbors. May we live in such a way so that when we die, we will join them in the kingdom of heaven. On Friday, November 2, we celebrate the feast of All Souls. This is a day to remember our beloved dead, especially those who are in the process of purification in Purgatory. Our prayers and sacrifices may hasten the process and have them enter eternal life in heaven. This day is a good reminder for us to remember to pray for the dead. We can offer a Mass, say a rosary, give alms to the poor, and offer up any suffering that we experience. May all those who have died enjoy eternal rest in the embrace of the Lord. We are beginning our RCIA Program. This is a program for those who wish to join our Catholic Christian community and for any adult Catholics who have not received the sacrament of Holy Communion and/or Confirmation. If you are interested in joining the program, please call the rectory. I will be available for confession this week on Tuesday, October 30, from 3:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs. God love you, 2

3 Reflection of the Week Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin. ~ Mother Teresa HOLY HOUR A time of quiet music & reflection Sunday 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. PRAYER GROUP Hour of praise and charismatic prayer Monday 7:30-8:30 p.m. BIBLE STUDY Scripture Reading & Discussion Tuesday 7:30 p.m. HEALING SOAKING PRAYER Come meet us to pray for healing Wednesday 6:30 p.m. Thursday 2:00 p.m. Spiritual Teaching Light of the World One of my favorite pieces of art hangs in the Keble College chapel in Oxford, England. The painting, The Light of the W orld by English artist William Holman Hunt, shows Jesus holding a lantern in His hand and knocking on a door to a home. One of the intriguing aspects of the painting is that the door doesn t have a handle. When questioned about the lack of a way to open the door, Hunt explained that he wanted to represent the imagery of Revelation 3:20, Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in. The apostle John s words and the painting illustrate the kindness of Jesus. He gently knocks on the door of our souls with His offer of peace. Jesus stands and patiently waits for us to respond. He does not open the door Himself and force His way into our lives. He does not impose His will on ours. Instead, He offers to all people the gift of salvation and light to guide us. To anyone who opens the door, He promises to enter. There are no other requirements or prerequisites. If you hear the voice of Jesus and His gentle knock on the door of your soul, be encouraged that He patiently waits for you and will enter if you welcome Him in. ~ Lisa Samra Lisa Samra- Our Daily Bread, 2018 by Our Daily Bread Ministries, Grand Rapids, MI. It invites us to engage our deepest selves - wherever we are - and enables us to respond in truth. The seeds we plant allow us to recognize God s presence in the challenges, as well as the joys, of living. Spirituality is present as we work, study, pray and play, and allows our holiness to become wholeness. As Jesus instructed the fishermen, who later became His Apostles, push the boat out further; there is more. What is happening in your heart and mind? What do you want God to hear, and what is He asking of you? Our parishioner, Kate Chandler, is certified in Franciscan Spiritual Direction and can be reached at kate.chandler44@gmail.com or Special Collection Next Week Next week s Special Collection, November 3-4, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), works to uphold the dignity of human life by breaking the cycle of poverty across the United States through grants to local community-based groups who create jobs, improve education, and strengthen neighborhoods. The rabbi leans over and asked, So how high can you advance in your organization? The priest said, If I m lucky, I guess I could become a bishop. Well, could you get any higher than that? asked the rabbi. I suppose that if my works are seen in a very good light that I might be made an archbishop, said the priest a bit cautiously. Is there any way that you might go higher? If all the saints should smile, I guess I could be made a cardinal, mused the priest humbly. Could you be anything higher than a cardinal? probed the rabbi. Hesitating a little bit, the priest said, Well, I suppose there s an outside chance I could be elected pope. The rabbi continued to press, Isn t there anything higher than pope you could become? What! You think I could be Christ himself? I could never do that! exclaimed the priest. The rabbi leaned back and said, Well, one of our boys already made it. ~ The Book of Catholic Jokes 6
