2 Dear Parishioners, This Friday we celebrate the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. This is the second feast of St. Joseph in our liturgical calendar. The first being March 19, the feast of St. Joseph, husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus. This feast day which was instituted by Pope Pius XII in 1955 was made to promote the dignity of labor and to encourage a spiritual dimension to labor unions. Pope Pius XII emphasized the importance of work to the Christian life in building up the kingdom of God. The worker is not to be degraded or be used for material gain but to be respected for his gifts and labor. For a practical application to this feast day, perhaps we can reflect on ways that we can add a spiritual dimension to our work day. How can we be like Jesus who worked as a carpenter? How can we live a virtuous life in our places of employment? I share with you a letter that I received this past week from Cardinal Seán; Congratulations on reaching your 2015 Catholic Appeal goal at St. Joseph Parish. The Catholic Appeal is the primary means through which we sustain essential ministries that build up our community and encourage all of our people to live together in faith. Thank you for your support of this important effort. The generosity of your parishioners is a sign of their recognition and appreciation of our pastoral leadership. I am truly grateful for their commitment and support of the work of the Church. Please share with them my heartfelt thanks for continuing to be joyful signs of God s boundless love and compassion to all. Thank you for your generous response to the Catholic Appeal. I also thank you for your continued generous support to this parish. Again, I encourage you to consider the spiritual activity of tithing, giving your first 10% of your income to the Lord. I ask that you support this parish with part of your tithe and to give the rest in support of other worthy organizations to help those in need. Also as you can see with our financial monthly reports, most of our parish support comes from our offertory and less from our electronic giving. It would be nice if we could reverse that in order to help us prepare for our yearly budget. HOLY HOUR A time of quiet music & reflection Sunday 7:00-8:00 p.m. PRAYER GROUP Hour of praise and charismatic prayer Monday 7:30-8:30 p.m. BIBLE STUDY Tuesday 7:30 p.m. HEALING SOAKING PRAYER Come meet us to pray for healing Wednesday 6:30 pm Thursday 2:00 p.m. Scriptural Teaching An Inquisitive Walk through the Scripture, 73 According to Leviticus 23 (cf. also Ex. 23:14-17; 34:22-24; Deut. 16:1-17), the Lord established Eight Feasts to be celebrated by Israel for the sake of remembering the deeds of the Lord so as to live according to the events proclaimed. These feasts are Sabbath (1-3), Passover, (4,5) Unleavened Bread, (6-8) First Fruits, (9-14) Pentecost, (15-22) Trumpets, (23-25) Atonement, (26-32) and Booths. (33-36) The Sabbath is a weekly celebration, the other seven are yearly. The importance of Sabbath can never be over-estimated the day for rest, for pondering God s word, for family, for humbly realizing that the world goes on even when I rest! Jews say that Jews do not keep the Sabbath, the Sabbath keeps the Jews in the remembrance of God. Briefly, Passover recounts the deliverance from Egypt. Unleavened Bread refers to journey after having experienced bread of affliction. First Fruits was celebrated when the Israel first entered the Promised Land. Pentecost relates to the harvest of the Lord s bounty. Trumpets signified the new year. Atonement was day for acknowledging sin and beseeching God s mercy. Booths refers to God dwelling with His people. The Jewish people continue to celebrate these feasts and we can see them on many secular calendars. Jesus is the fulfillment of these feasts. Besides being Lord of the Sabbath and making it possible for us to enter into the Sabbath of God (Read Hebrews 3 and 4 for some good insight,) Jesus is our Passover, the Lamb sacrificed so that we could be delivered from the kingdom of darkness and satan. Jesus is the Unleavened Bread we eat as we journey to the Kingdom of Promise. Jesus is the First Fruits on whom we feast at Eucharist. Jesus and the Father sent the Holy Spirit on Pentecost so that we can literally live now with our citizenship in heaven (Phils. 3:20) and have the power to love as God loves As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you; abide in My love. (the Holy Spirit is the Love between Father and Son) (Jn. 15:9) Jesus has fulfilled the first four feasts but has not fulfilled the last three yet. Remember that Jewish tradition speaks of two Messiahs (son of Joseph, son of David) one who comes to die in battle against the enemy and to be raised up by the second as Kingdom of God is established. Christians believe in one Messiah who comes two times first in humility to die on the cross and rise; second in glory as judge of the living and the dead. Right now we are living in the age of the Gentiles as Jerusalem will be trodden down by the Gentiles, until the age of the Gentiles is fulfilled (Lk. 21:24) and lest any of you be wise in your own conceits, I want you to understand this: a hardening has come upon part of Israel, until the full number of Gentiles come in, and so all Israel will be saved (Roms. 11:25, 26) The Feast of Trumpets will be fulfilled when Jesus return in glory is proclaimed and initiated. At that time, the Day of Atonement will be fulfilled when Israel will look on him whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a first-born. (Zech 12:10) After the judgment, God will dwell among His people and the Feast of Booths will be fulfilled as in Revelation 21, 22. Scripture is such a remarkable book of direction and clarity to recognize Jesus as the only Messiah, Son of God, Son of Mary. Praise the Lord. 3

LITURGY CORNER In the portion of the chapter from the Gospel of the good shepherd Jesus describes his relationship with his followers as similar to the relationship between a good shepherd and his sheep. As a good shepherd will risk and lay down his life in order to protect his sheep, Jesus willingly sacrifices himself for the sake of his sheep. Jesus contrasts the actions of the good shepherd with the actions of the hired shepherd who abandons the sheep in the face of danger. In the verses following Jesus' teaching, we learn that the Pharisees and the other religious leaders understand that Jesus is referring to them when he describes the hired shepherds. The concern of a good shepherd for his sheep is part of the shepherd's job. Jesus says, however, that the actions of the good shepherd are based upon the relationship that develops between the shepherd and the sheep. This is at the heart of the difference between the good shepherd and the hired shepherd. The good shepherd knows the sheep and therefore acts out of love. For the Good Shepherd, this is never simply part of a job; this love-in-action is integral to his identity. PARENTING CORNER 5 Principles to Nurture Your Child s Faith 1. Listen with your heart as well as with your head. 2. Encourage wonder and curiosity in your child. 3. Coach your child in empathy early. It s a building block for morality. 4. Display religious artwork in your home. This will serve as a steady witness that faith is an important part of life. 5. Gently guide your child to a life of honesty. 6. Whenever appropriate, model for your child how to say, I m sorry. 7. Eat meals together regularly as a family. It will be an anchor for your child in days to come. 8. Pray together in good times and bad. Worship regularly together as a family. 9. Be generous to those who need help. Make helping others an important focus of your life as a family. 10. See your child for the wonder that God made. Communicate your conviction that your child was created for a noble purpose- to serve God and others in this life and to be happy with God forever in the next. 5
