2 Dear Parishioners, On Saturday we celebrated Independence Day. It is a great day for our country commemorating when we declared our independence from England. We mark the day with parades, concerts and fireworks. Wakefield does a great job of observing July 4th. Even in our daily lives, we celebrate when our children go off and take responsibility for their lives. They no longer live dependent on their parents for the basic necessities of life. Their independence is a mark of maturity. We can also look upon this holiday with a spiritual reflection. First of all, there is no celebration of independence from God. In fact, if we were to be independent from God, we would be like a branch separated from the vine. We would die. This is why the Lord tells us that we are and have nothing without Him. He calls us sheep, for a sheep is dependent upon the shepherd for protection and nourishment. If we are to be independent in the spiritual life, it should be from sin. Jesus came to set us free from the power of sin and death. When we confess our sins we are free, for the Lord forgives our sin and frees us from our guilt and shame. True freedom is to live a life of holiness, loving our God and our neighbor. Concerning our country, we see to our peril that we are moving away from being one nation under God. This past week we saw the Supreme Court made it legal for same sex couples to be married. Does anyone think about the one who instituted this union? God made them male and female and the two become one flesh. What would you say if someone took a novel and changed the ending and wrote their name as the author? Or look at it this way, water is H20 - not H2H2 or OO. The formula of marriage is man and woman. Marriage is not on the level of civil rights. It is an institution made for the union of man and woman, open to procreation, and the mutual expression of their love. We are changing the laws of God to satisfy our own unbridled passions. We have quickly become a nation that is haughty and arrogant in living in ways that are in complete opposition to the laws of God. Let us truly celebrate our independence day by repentance and recommitment in being dependent upon God. Caleb s Corner A piece of grass a day, keeps the vet away I will be available for confession this week on Tuesday evening, July 7, from 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs. God love you, 2
3 Reflection of the Week Love is a binding force by which another is joined to me and cherished as myself HOLY HOUR A time of quiet music & reflection Sunday 7:00-8:00 p.m. PRAYER GROUP Hour of praise and charismatic prayer Monday 7:30-8:30 p.m. BIBLE STUDY Tuesday 7:30 p.m. HEALING SOAKING PRAYER Come meet us to pray for healing Wednesday 6:30 pm Thursday 2:00 p.m. Scriptural Teaching An Inquisitive Walk through the Scripture, 83 We recommend keeping these reflections in a three-ring binder for the sake of pondering, challenging, questioning what is offered. Please consider that this is a series and some things may not be as clear if all individual reflections are not read. As we continue to look to Hebrew Scriptures to understand Jesus as Messiah, we consider the third reason for leaving the pagan nations in the Holy Land and by analogy, for allowing demons to tempt and humans to sin after the Death, Resurrection and Ascension of the Lord. The third reason was to teach Israel/us how to make war. Now these are the nations which the Lord left, to test Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had no experience of any war in Canaan; it was only that the generations of the people of Israel might know war, that he might teach war to such at least had not known it before. (Judg. 3:1, 2) Of course, there will be concerns of political correctness in dealing with war but we must keep in mind that the early Church came to understand the pagan nations as representing demons and sin. We Christians were never told to make war expect against evil, injustice, sin. Jesus never commanded that we war against other humans. Unfortunately, we have not taken this to heart and we still wage war against others in our thoughts, words and deeds. But it seems that the Lord planted in human nature the readiness to make war. We fight for life when our lives are threatened. A loving parent will fight to protect her child. A passer-by may engage in battle to aid a person being attacked by others. A man may fight against his own evil inclinations so as to choose the better part. Readiness and willingness to enter into war is a human trait but Christians must have a more profound understanding of this. St. Paul wrote in his Letter to the Ephesians (6:10-18) Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints. More to come on spiritual warfare. 3

As we continue in Ordinary time, we enjoy an opportunity to mature quietly and think on the great gifts we are given. Just as a baby matures in the quiet of the womb, we may find the peace and introspection of Ordinary Time provides us the space to grow in our spiritual life, increasing in faith. While we happily engage in the high celebrations of Christmas and Easter joy, we are now called to the quiet time of peaceful meditations in the "still of the season." Our Lady of Fatima Outdoor Rosary A monthly outdoor rosary prayer in honor of Our Lady of Fatima in front of the statue of Our Lady will be held on Monday, July 13 at noon. For information on the messages of Fatima visit On this site, you can also view live broadcasts of services conducted in Fatima, Portugal, directly from the apparitions chapel. PARENTING CORNER Loyola Press 3-Minute Retreats Loyola Press 3-Minute Retreats invite you to take a short prayer break right at your computer. Spend some quiet time reflecting on a Scripture passage. Knowing that not everyone prays at the same pace, you have control over the pace of the retreat. After each screen, a Continue button will appear. Click it when you are ready to move on. If you are new to online prayer, the basic timing of the screens will guide you through the experience. Please use the link listed below:
