We began this New Year with three new appointments to key positions in the parish... Ruth Jess is now well established as Music Group Co-ordinator at the a.m. service of Cathedral Praise. Ruth brings a wealth of musical experience to the group having held the position of Music Director at Union Road Church in Magherafelt, as well as being involved in leadership in the parishes of Maghera and Waringstown where her dad was Rector. Already Ruth sees great potential within the singing group and has many new ideas to further develop the group within the worshipping life of the Church. Margaret Bailie is our new DC Rock Leader. She is a relatively newcomer to the Parish and began her work with the children of DC Rock on the 10th of January. Margaret has a proven record in working with children and young people through Sunday School work and leading Youth Clubs and Youth Camps. Like Ruth, she recognises great potential in the development of DC Rock and its value in providing children with a good solid grounding in the Christian faith. Orly Watson was appointed Organist and Choirmaster at the end of last year and takes up his new position on 1st February. Orly is a very able and capable young man having held the post of Deputy Organist in Armagh Cathedral as well as having played for the Kerygma Choir in the Diocese of Down and Dromore. He has experience in training and developing Church Choirs and is very much looking forward to working with and building up our own Choir. We thank God for Ruth, Margaret and Orly and for their willingness to serve Him in the overall worship of His Church. Their commitment and vision is a great encouragement at this time. Let s remember them in prayer, and encourage them in whatever way we can as they commit themselves to the praise and honour of God in this place Cathedral Life

Loose cash collections are not recordable and are not considered as qualifying subscriptions. Further information can be obtained from Church Wardens (Gareth Lough and Ian Doig) or Honorary Secretary (Billy McCallum). 4 On Sunday 10th January Mrs June Butler was commissioned as the new Diocesan President of Down and Dromore Mothers ' Union. Four of us from the Cathedral travelled to Saintfield Parish Church where the service was conducted by Bishop Harold Miller. Lady Eames gave a touching address and warmly welcomed June to the new post and wished her well for the future. The work and devotion of the outgoing President, Mrs Joy Silcock, was also recognised and she was thanked for her dedication. Following the service a very excellent afternoon tea was prepared by the ladies and enjoyed by all before travelling home. Overseas Meeting On 24th February we will have our Overseas meeting following the Lenten Service which will be held at 7:30 in the Cathedral. The speaker will be from the Down and Dromore Diocesan Council. All are welcome to join us and hear about the important work being done overseas. Women's World day of Prayer This year the Women's World Day of Prayer is being hosted by First Dromore Presbyterian Non - Subscribing Church, Rampart Street on Friday 4th March at 8.00 p.m. and has been prepared by the Christian women of Cuba. Please note this is not a Mothers' Union event and all ladies in the church are strongly encouraged to attend. As always, choir members from all participating churches will come together to provide the music and a choir practice will take place in First Dromore Presbyterian Non - Subscribing Church at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday 28th February. The choir will also meet at 7.15 p.m. on the evening of the service. All singers are welcome to join the choir and everyone, men, women and children are invited to the service Cathedral Life
The preparation and serving of refreshments in our Church hall following a funeral service in the Cathedral, is something that has been provided voluntarily by members of the congregation for many years. This is considered an expression of Christian love as well as an act of practical support that members of the Cathedral family can offer to a bereaved family at a difficult time. There are a small number of organisers who take it in turns to do the planning, shopping etc and these ladies are supported by a number of helpers who turn up when asked, to do the preparation and serving of food as well as the clearing up afterwards. During 2015, twelve funeral teas took place with over 2000 teas served. Four organisers were supported by 19 helpers (16 female, 3 male). On each occasion helpers, who are not required to provide food, gave up approximately 2-3 hours of their time and while some people worked only once in the year, the majority helped out at 3 funeral teas within 12 months. If you would like to join the current list of helpers or would like more information about what is involved, please give your name and contact details to Jill in the Church Office - Tel Thank you to everyone who gives their time and energy in support of bereaved families. With the conclusion of the annual collection for Leprosy Mission, kindly co-ordinated by Tommy and Pearl Wilson, comes our sincere thanks to t h o s e w h o g e n e r o u s l y contributed. This year was raised. This work can be supported using Boxes available in the Tower Porch. Please speak to a Church Warden or Tommy. We thank Tommy and Pearl for their management of this aspect of mission. February
(A message from Jane Corbett in South Sudan taken from website) Greetings from Juba! Nina and I arrived yesterday afternoon (14th January) from Maridi. We had a really wonderful visit. I think we were able to be a real encouragement and we were both very blessed and encouraged. We were delighted to see that the Women s project we started last year is really going well, despite the unrest. They have made and distributed 277 packs and were hard at work on more! There were also a number of completed packs waiting to be distributed when the new term begins in February! We also had time with the people who were involved in the terrible disaster of the Oil tanker. The burn victims are being counselled by ladies in the Mothers Union. The work was again very impressive. N i n a a nd I le ft m oney t o b u y V a seline fo r the victims, who have nothing for their skin, now that the Red Cross has left. Nina has flown home but please continue to pray for Jane as she visits the Munyangajus at Bird of Paradise Ministries, Rwanda. (Some of the ladies from the Mothers Union) 6... Cathedral Life
Via Wings has gone from strength to strength since it was set up in November Initially it aimed to reach out to young and single mums and their children from the area. Dare2Care followed which distributes food on a monthly basis to up to 80 families as well as offering emergency supplies. Gail Redmond explains that when people come to us for help we tell them that this isn t charity. It s just one woman putting out her hand to another woman at a time in their lives when they need it. We re reassuring them that someone cares. One service user related her story anonymously: I came to Via Wings with a lot of problems. Without them these last few years I don t know where I would have been. I lost my own home which I had for 20 years, I lost my business and my husband has mental health issues. Just everything. It s been a rough few years but, hopefully, thanks to Gail and the team, we re at the other side, we re getting there. They re an amazing group of people. The charity expanded in 2013 with the opening of a social enterprise in the town. Hope & Soul, a shabby chic upcycling store was opened along with the Olive Branch Coffee dock. As well as mentoring and counselling services, Via Wings offers volunteering and training opportunities to people from all walks of life. As it has grown it has employed 10 local people, 9 of whom had previously been out of work. The future This year Via Wings launched Buy a Bird of Hope where supporters could sign up to donate 5 per month. In 2016 they are launching a campaign to Build a nest so that they can move to a building large enough to accommodate all their services. 8 Are you taking a mid-winter break? If you are preparing to take off for foreign climes, do keep an eye out for signs that have English words but perhaps not an English meaning! In hotels and train stations and airports all over the world there are polite little signs that will bring a smile to the lips of even an exhausted traveller. For instance, how about these- Romania: The lift is being fixed for the next day. During that time we regret you will be unbearable. Russia: If this is your first visit to the USSR, you are welcome to it. Italy: If service is required, give two strokes to the maid and three to the waiter. Spain: Our wine list leaves you with nothing to hope for. Denmark: In the event of fire, open a window and announce your presence in a seemly manner. Canary Islands: If you telephone for room service you will get the answer you deserve. Political leaders Don t worry about your son, he is set to become a great politician, the teacher said. The parents were delighted and asked how she could tell. Well, he can say more things that sound well and mean nothing at all than anyone else in the class. Up and down A psychiatrist was training some young clergy who were interested in doing counselling. They had been discussing various forms of depression. Deciding to test them, she asked: How would you diagnose someone who visits your church, walks back and forth, screaming at the top of his lungs one minute, and then collapsing in a pew to weep uncontrollably the next? A young man at the back of the room raised his hand and ventured: a football coach? Light A fellow nurse at my hospital received a call from an anxious woman. "I'm diabetic and I'm afraid I've had too much sugar today," she said. "Are you light-headed?" my colleague asked. "No," the caller answered, "I'm a brunette." 8... Cathedral Life
