Simons Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street New York, NY (212) Fax (212) capcampaign@saintignatiusloyola.org Dear Parishioners and Friends, September 2007 During the summer, Fr. Blaszczak announced that we would be reporting more fully to you all about our Parish Campaign where it currently stands and where we together as a community of faith need to take it. However, before reporting on the progress of the Parish Campaign, we thought that it would be useful to restate its origin and purposes. Late last year the Parish was requested by the Archdiocese to conduct a capital fund drive as part of the Archdiocese s Bicentennial Campaign to support its important work for needy parishes. At the same time, the Parish s Finance Committee was considering a number of pressing needs of our Parish: the restoration of our landmark church, the renovation of our Parish Grammar School, and the strengthening and expansion of our various Parish ministries. Fr. Blaszczak also saw this as an opportunity for building an even stronger community for worship and service within our Parish. In order to avoid confronting our parishioners with multiple fund drives, it was decided to combine this year s Cardinal s Appeal and the Parish s traditional Spring and Fall Collections with the Archdiocesan Bicentennial Campaign into this one Parish Campaign, always stressing the importance of every parishioner s continued support of those collections as the base amount of his or her commitment to the Campaign. Historically, our Parish has had to rely upon our annual Spring and Fall collections just to meet a portion of its operating budget, with no material reserve or investment income to fall back on in the event of either a shortfall or an emergency capital need, such as the restoration of our Church or associated facilities. We would draw your attention to the boards in the narthex, the Parish House and Wallace Hall that touch upon some of the needs of our Parish, including its expanding ministries. B u i l d i n g a C o m m u n i t y o f D i s c i p l e s

2 Our Parish Campaign s total goal of $5,000,000 is broken down as follows: $750,000 for this year s Spring and Fall Appeals $1,100,000 for restoration of our landmark church $2,000,000 to assist a $10,000,000 capital drive being undertaken by our Parish Grammar School for desperately needed renovations $500,000 to strengthen and expand our various Parish ministries $250,000 for our 2007 commitment to the Cardinal s Appeal, and $400,000 for the Archdiocese Fund for Needy Parishes. Anything we raise in addition to these amounts will go to the Endowment needs of the Parish. We are very happy to report that we have received verbal pledges totaling over $3 million to date, with many parishioners telling us that their pledges represent significant commitments in relation to their financial circumstances. We are hard at work confirming those verbal pledges into written ones, so that our contributors can make clear how much they are committing to our current operating needs and how much to the capital portion of the Campaign which can be spread over a number of years depending on the amount to be deferred. We are also asking parishioners and friends to contribute funds as soon as possible for that portion allocated to current cash needs, such as the Parish s Spring and Fall Annual Appeals and the Cardinal s Appeal (which the Parish is obligated to pay regardless of cash collections). We have scheduled three sessions in Wallace Hall to give all parishioners and friends a chance to hear the details of the Campaign and ask questions. They are on Tuesday, September 25th and Wednesday, September 26th from 6:30-8:30 PM., and on Sunday, September 30th at 12:30 PM. Last Sunday we alerted our parishioners that, while we had mailed out invitations for these events, not all of you may have received it. We would again urge you to use the form below to update your contact details if you have not received an invitation and, at the same time, to let us know if you can attend. We are also planning a broad telephone appeal to parishioners to encourage 100% participation, and a Cabaret performance on Monday, November 12th to benefit the Parish ministries. In addition, we know that many parishioners who have already been contacted about the Campaign are still considering what commitments they can make. With all of your help, we are confident that the Campaign will reach and even exceed its ambitious goal. As we said before, every dollar we raise in excess of the stated goals can be added to the Parish s Endowment Fund, which is significantly lower than it should be for a Church with such a large and growing number of parishioners. It costs almost $1,000 per year per parishioner household to cover just our operating costs that provide for the services and programs which make our Parish so responsive to all of our spiritual needs. Please think seriously about the amount you can commit to the Campaign, keeping in mind that the pledges to the capital portions of the Campaign can be spread over a number of years. If you have questions, please call the Campaign office at or us at capcampaign@saintignatiusloyola. org. Marissa and Richard Blackett General Campaign Co-Chairs # Mary and Win Rutherfurd Major Gifts Co-Chairs DID YOU GET YOUR INVITATION FROM OUR PASTOR? Fr.
