1 Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for reward, save that of knowing that I do your will. Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street New York, New York (212) B u i l d i n g a C o m m u n i t y o f D i s c i p l e s - Prayer for Generosity (St. Ignatius of Loyola) The Lenten season will soon be upon us, beginning with Ash Wednesday on February 17th. Lent offers the opportunity to reflect and to renew ourselves in preparation for Christ s passion, death and resurrection. The constant demands of modern life in a city like New York can present real challenges to our ability to live the Lenten season to the fullest. As a result, many of us see Lent as a chance to kick a bad habit or to make some type of small, personal sacrifice. While such endeavors are good and important, our relationship with God is also strengthened and our faith is also deepened when we understand Lent as an opportunity to reach out to others. Last year the Parish introduced the Lenten Cross Project to provide service and advocacy opportunities during Lent. For six weeks parishioners took something on and volunteered their time, skills, and energy to those in need. We are delighted to continue the work of the Lenten Cross Project this year. For the next three weekends we will have sign-up tables in the Narthex of the Church after Mass where parishioners can learn about numerous service and advocacy opportunities. For every commitment to prayer, service, or advocacy, a colorful ribbon will be attached to the Cross, symbolizing the parishioner s commitment. In 2009 over 750 pledges were made, and through the generosity of so many, our shelter was fully staffed, students were tutored, The Lenten Cross February 7, 2010 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time cards were written to the elderly, and blood was donated, just to name a few. Equally important, parishioners advocated to combat world hunger through Bread for the World and supported UNICEF s efforts to provide safe drinking water to impoverished children. In response to last year s generous participation and interest, this year we are including additional opportunities. These include advocating for affordable housing through Habitat for Humanity and mentoring/ tutoring activities for adults looking to rebuild their lives through the Doe Fund. We will also offer information about how to make financial contributions to victims of the earthquake in Haiti. We are also reaching out to younger parishioners and will introduce a smaller Lenten Cross for the Wallace Hall Community, where children will be able to make age-appropriate commitments. We view the Lenten Cross project not as a vehicle to promote a limited period of service to others, but rather as an instrument of personal renewal and commitment that will last throughout the year. We hope that the Lenten Cross and its ribbons will become a symbol of the way in which the Risen Christ lives in us. Please join us in this endeavor. Magda Martinelli-Torres Co-Chair, Ignatian Social Justice To learn more about Lenten Cross activities, please visit the sign-up tables in the Narthex after Mass. Information about the Lenten Cross Project can also be found on the St. Ignatius website: Inquiries can be directed to lentencross@gmail.com The sign-up period this year will extend from Saturday, February 6th to Sunday, February 21st.

NEXT WEEKEND WORLD MARRIAGE DAY Sunday, February 14th We will offer a special blessing to married couples at all Masses the weekend of February 13th and 14th. OF INTEREST Next week our Parish will take up the Peter s Pence Collection. This Collection allows the Holy Father to cast the light of Christ upon the world by providing emergency assistance to those who need it most around the globe. Please be as generous as your means allow. Dear Friends in the Lord: February 7, 2010 Year for Priests PLEASE OPEN FOR PAGES 3 AND 4 Office of the Archbishop 1011 First Avenue New York, NY The recent earthquake in Haiti that has resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives and immense property and natural resource damage is a reminder of the tremendous amount of pain and suffering that exists in our world. From the Middle East to Africa to Latin America and elsewhere across the globe we never stop learning about the various hardships and challenges that our brothers and sisters in the Lord are facing on a daily basis. All too often, local authorities alone are not able to afford their people the relief that is needed. Thus it is that the Holy Father receives countless appeals for assistance from needy nations and people. In turn, he asks all Catholics to support him, primarily through the annual Peter s Pence Appeal. This annual collection enables all of us here in the archdiocese to demonstrate our fidelity to the Holy Father as well as our concern for and solidarity with those less fortunate than ourselves. With this in mind, I ask that you be as generous as you can in making a sacrificial offering to this year s collection, which will be taken up in our parishes on the weekend of February 13th and 14th. You will be doing the work of the Lord, and for this I am most grateful. With prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ, +Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan Archbishop of New York HAITIAN EARTHQUAKE RELIEF Jesuit Refugee Service is providing emergency relief to the Haitian people. To donate, visit and choose Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.
