1 Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street New York, New York (212) B u i l d i n g a C o m m u n i t y o f D i s c i p l e s The season of Lent is a time of grace that invites us to deepen our relationship with Jesus. It is a time when we relive the mysteries of our salvation, climaxing in the suffering, death and resurrection of the Lord. Just what is at the heart of the mystery of our salvation? It is God identifying with us so closely as to become one with us. And in Lent, we focus on the weakness and suffering of God, a God, who in Jesus of Nazareth, experiences the suffering of the world. In the life of Jesus, we see one who is particularly identified with the poor, the sinners, and the marginalized people of his day. During this season of Lent, we try to identify more with the person of Jesus as he identified with those less fortunate than ourselves. And so we pray more these days: praying for the suffering people of the world and for the coming of a time of justice and peace, the absence of which causes so much pain. One of the characteristics of the marginalized and the poor in our world today is hunger. Almost one billion people on our planet are malnourished and go to bed hungry. In Sub-Saharan Africa, one in three people do not have enough to eat. There is one practice associated with Lent that is an effective means of identifying with Jesus, and that is fasting. But we don t fast just to do something difficult or prove to ourselves that we have a certain level of self-control. Rather, we fast to be more like Christ, who not only fasted Himself, but whose whole life was a model of compassion. The word compassion means to suffer with. The compassionate one is somebody who feels with the person suffering. By fasting we learn what a vast number of the people on our earth experience every day of their lives. We will know what it is to go to bed hungry, and to feel weak throughout the day. The poor African can only afford one meal a day and regularly goes to bed hungry. I knew school boys and girls who walked for an hour and half to get to school, and did this on an empty stomach. After a full day of classes, during which they had nothing to eat, they walked home for their one meal of the day. Fasting helps us to understand what they experience as God The People are Hungry As the deer yearns for running water, so my soul is yearning for you, my God. March 8, 2009 Second Sunday of Lent understood our human experience by becoming one with us. It may even make us more generous in reaching out to the less fortunate. Perhaps we may be more generous in giving to those who feed the poor, or we may even be moved to assist in one of the soup-kitchen projects, and assist in the actual work of feeding the hungry. The prophet Isaiah tells us that if fasting is to be of value, it must be accompanied by compassion and a concern for social justice (Isaiah 58). The practice of fasting is common in almost all religious traditions. We are probably most familiar with the Muslim practice of fasting during the month of Ramadan. During this month, the Muslim abstains from all food and drink, including water, from sunrise to sunset. This is considered one of the five pillars of Islam. The Jewish people fast during the Day of Atonement. There is a more personal side to the Christian practice of fasting. A person may fast as a way of interceding with God for some grace. Our fasting says, more than words ever could, that I am empty, Lord, and I need you to live. It is an expression of intense longing for God. As the Psalmist says: As the deer yearns for running water, so my soul is yearning for you, my God. The hunger and thirst of fasting makes us aware of our own longing for God. I become aware of how empty I am, and how dependent I am on God. Finally, we return to the imitation of Christ. Jesus began his public life with a fast of 40 days in the desert. The tradition of fasting has a long history in the church. Paul fasted before his baptism (Acts 9:9), and many of the saints throughout the ages practiced fasting. The church asks us to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. It is up to us to decide how much fasting we will do during Lent in addition to these days. We are invited to share the experience of Jesus as an expression of the dying to the self that will enrich our experience of rising to new life with Him at Easter. Fr. Ugo Nacciarone, S.J.
