1 Established in 1851 Jesuit Since 1866 September 16, 2018 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Welcome, Fr. Sullivan! There is a saying that what goes around comes around. In the Fall of 1976 I was a newly ordained priest on the staff of St. Ignatius Retreat House in Manhasset, Long Island. As it happened, the first weekend retreat group I was to direct was a wonderful group of women from St. Ignatius Loyola Parish. As I recollect, it was this group s first retreat and it was also the first women s retreat at St. Ignatius, Inisfada. Little did I realize that over forty years later I would find myself a parish priest at St. Ignatius! My journey to the Society of Jesus goes back to my days as a high school student at Brooklyn Prep. I commuted to BP from my home in Valley Stream, Long Island. It was there that I met the Jesuits whom I admired for their faith and for their ability to teach us how to think and how to sense the presence of God in the world. I was impressed by the missionary work of the Society, and at that time early 60 s I was moved by the life of Walter Ciszek SJ who had returned from Russia having spent years in prison and work camps there during and after WW II. I entered the Society in 1965 and went through the usual course of studies prior to ordination. Two years of this period I spent at Xavier High School in Chuuk, Micronesia. Following ordination in 1976 I worked for two and half years at Inisfada retreat house. In 1978 the Diocese of Rockville Centre invited our Province to take responsibility for St. Anthony s Parish in Oceanside. I was asked to work there. As a novice I remember speaking to another novice of my desire to work as a parish priest, but reflecting that I probably wouldn t have much opportunity. Well, my work at St. Anthony s was the beginning of 31 years in parish work. Liturgy, youth ministry and work in the Spiritual Exercises were of particular interest to me. After 8 years as an associate pastor, I served for another 6 years as pastor. In 1992 I was asked to be director of Inisfada. I served in that capacity for a year, but I missed parish life and so asked to return. After an interim year at St. Ignatius, Brooklyn, I became pastor of St. Francis Xavier on 16th Street. In 1996 I moved to Jersey City where I became pastor of St. Peter s Church. I would be there for the next 8 years, a time when St. Peter s consolidated with four other parishes into a new Parish of the Resurrection. During this time I also served as rector of the Jesuit Community of St. Peter s Prep. I received a surprise phone call from our Provincial in Spring of 2004 asking me to do formation work as rector of our Jesuit First Studies program at Ciszek Hall at Fordham University. I enjoyed the next 6 years living and working with our young Jesuit scholastics. At the conclusion of that assignment I was sent back to Jersey City to be rector of the St. Peter s College Jesuit Community. One year later in 2011 the College took over St. Aedan s Church and I became pastor of the congregation there. As it happens, St, Aedan s was Fr. Yesalonia s home parish! Getting to know and love the people in the various places I served has been the greatest gift of parish life. I very much look forward to getting to know the community here at St. Ignatius over the coming weeks. Let us pray for each other! Rev. Vincent B. Sullivan, S.J. Associate Pastor
