1 Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street New York, New York (212) B u i l d i n g a C o m m u n i t y o f D i s c i p l e s An Advent Journey for All of Us Today at the 11:00 AM Solemn Mass, 21 men and women will participate in the Rite of Welcome and Entrance into the Catechumenate, marking the end of the Inquiry Phase of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). During Advent the next phase of this journey will begin for them the preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. I participated in this Rite last year with the support of the St. Ignatius Loyola Community. I grew up in a non-denominational Christian family and was simply taught that God exists. We attended church regularly. For lack of a better expression, I went with the flow. What was missing was not my actual faith in God, but a personal and close relationship with Him. I believed in God because my parents told me to do so. As I became older, I felt as though there had to be something more meaningful or fulfilling to faith. My (Catholic) husband and I married eleven years ago, and we attend Mass together. Initially, the Mass was a bit of a challenge for me to follow. We have two young children who are being raised Catholic and attend Catholic school. I had the mistaken notion that Catholic schools have a magic formula to make children good. I realize now that the goodness I see in so many Catholic school children is largely due to the religion itself! I had many unanswered questions and longed for spiritual guidance but did not know where or how to find it. It felt as though I had been wandering around aimlessly in a city with no street signs or map to offer any direction. Nonetheless, I was convinced that if there is a God, I would be shown the shape or form of certain truths. Parents are their children s greatest influence, and that was one of the reasons that led me to my conversion to Catholicism. The school is only an aid to the children and by no means a substitute for parents. When my oldest child started second grade and my youngest first grade, I decided to attend my own school (RCIA) to learn about Catholic faith and what my religious responsibilities would be as a Catholic for I neither wanted to be careless nor ignorant December 4, 2011 Second Sunday of Advent of this faith for the benefit of my children, my husband, and myself. Through my spiritual journey in RCIA, and the beautiful Masses and enlightening homilies at St. Ignatius Loyola, I gained a better and more thorough understanding of the Catholic Church its foundation, principles and teachings. I have more respect and greater appreciation now because I believe in it and want to live the life of a good Catholic. Catholicism shows me that I owe God reverence and obedience and that I am dependent on God just as my children are dependent on me. I also have certain responsibilities to the community. A truly Catholic life demands true love of Christ and everyone around us and fosters a commitment of service to others. How could there possibly be Christianity without love? Catholic faith also teaches me the importance of being true to myself, learning how not to sin, and receive and obey God s laws. When I began my spiritual quest to become Catholic, the Church warmly welcomed me with open arms. Since then, I have gained peace of soul and the contentment that comes from trying to lead a good life of Christian virtue. I consider this a new and wonderful lifelong journey. Through faith, prayer, and service, I am fully committed. As we move through Advent, not only do I reflect on my own personal revelation and spiritual journey, I also think about those who seek to have a personal and meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ and are interested in becoming Catholics as well. I will pray for them as I know this will be an incredible and exciting journey for them as it had been for me! I look forward to witnessing these adults participate in the Rite of Welcoming on December 4th. Let us together pray for and welcome this group of adults as they begin their journey toward Easter! 3 LECTURE THE POLITICS OF WORSHIP: An Art Slide Lecture presented by Rev. Leo J. O Donovan, S.J. Wednesday, December 7th 7:00 PM in Wallace Hall Is the instinct for worship a deep-seated human trait, or a projection of our need to identify with those more powerful than ourselves? The persistent emergence of dictators and demagogues may indicate the latter. But aspects of the Christmas story richly suggest otherwise. Rev. Leo J. O Donovan, S.J., is President emeritus of Georgetown University and a past president of the Catholic Theological Society of America. He was a student of Fr. Karl Rahner at the University of Muenster and has written extensively about him, including an introductory volume, A World of Grace. 5 THE 2011 ANNUAL COLLECTION FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Last weekend we implemented the changes in the Roman Missal. Because our Gather hymnals are only a few years old, inserts were attached inside the back covers so that we can continue to use the books for a while longer. I mention this because our Sacristan noticed that almost 30 hymnals have disappeared from the Church. For anyone who borrowed one to study the changes in Mass texts, we have now made copies of the inserts. They are available at the Parish House and I encourage you to take one home. An electronic version can be found on our website s homepage. I also want to give you an update on the search for a new Music Director. Following consultation with a number of music professionals, staff, and parishioners, we are ready to move ahead. The position will soon be advertised, with the expectation that we will begin the interview process by mid-winter, and have a permanent Director in place by summer. Special thanks to our Interim Director, K. Scott Warren, who is doing an outstanding job. Thank you and Blessed Advent! Thank you to those who have contributed to this appeal. At present, the total stands at $168,860. The Annual Collection is very important to the financial well-being of our Parish.
