1 Established in 1851 Jesuit Since 1866 March 10, 2019 First Sunday of Lent Welcome Home Lent is the special preparation period for receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. Today at the 11 AM Solemn Mass, 23 men and women will participate in various Rites: the Rite of Sending, the Call to Continuing Conversion (for those already baptized), and for those preparing for Baptism, the Rite of Election at St. Patrick s Cathedral. I participated in these Rites fifteen years ago, during Lent I have vivid memories that stand out like snapshots: I had butterflies dancing in my stomach all morning. I was nervous and excited. I remember my name being called at the Rite of Sending at the Parish, being welcomed by the late Cardinal Egan at the Cathedral, and signing my name in the Book of the Elect. Reflecting on the time that led up to those moments and the time since, I am struck by a few things. When I began exploring the Catholic faith (of all religions!) I challenged God. You want me, God? I asked. Well, you better overcome each and every one of my objections or forget it. Today, I shake my head at my ignorance and, more especially, my arrogance. I grew up in Los Angeles in a devoutly agnostic family: we celebrated Christmas and Easter, but we never went to church. We had no particular faith and it never occurred to me that this was odd. What was odd was that some friends went to church. It was a completely alien concept. My father instilled in us that religion caused a lot of wars, and why would we want to be party to that? It seemed that religious people didn t question God they weren t supposed to question God. After moving to New York City in 1999, I felt drawn to God and the Catholic Mass. This was disconcerting. What was I thinking? Intellectualism was a time-honored Duncan Family Tradition and religion was not invited. Or so I thought. The great questions of life, art, and politics were always topics of conversation at dinner, which my dad called communion and breaking bread. When my brother and I needed moral correction, my dad would say, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and, Judge not, lest ye shall be judged. It would be years before I would understand the Eucharistic foreshadowing of those verses in the Bible. Second, I loved attending the RCIA sessions at St. Ignatius. It remains one of the happiest periods of my life. During the inquiry phase, I experienced new insights and consolations. Meeting with a group of people on a similar journey was exactly the support needed when feeling I might be betraying my family values. The RCIA Team was loving, open-minded, and down to earth. We became a family and it was safe to ask any question. Looking back, I can see I was falling in love: with God, the world, and life. It was as though I had come home to a place I didn t know was waiting for me. I finally decided to allow God to figure out the rest. More than anything else, I longed to know Jesus Christ more intimately. My challenge to God to overcome each and every one of my objections slowly turned into God s invitation to surrender myself, to give myself in love and service. The following of this call from God has completely changed my life: I now teach Theology at an all-girls Catholic high school in Manhattan where I am Department Chair. My husband, Brian, and I have been married for ten years and in September of 2018, we welcomed our son, Zachary Christopher, through God s gift of adoption. God s blessings never fail to overwhelm. I am so grateful to have been called home. Skye Christina Angioletti RCIA Team Member and Parishioner
