1 Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street New York, New York (212) B u i l d i n g a C o m m u n i t y o f D i s c i p l e s Finding God in the Gift of Prayer Earlier this month, the Ignatian Young Adult Committee at the Parish began a new series introducing people in their 20s and 30s to Ignatian Spirituality called Finding God In The concept of finding God in all things is central to Ignatian Spirituality and the first foray into this theme was an evening of reflection called Finding God In Prayer. As a member of the IYA committee and as a religion teacher at St. Ignatius Loyola Grammar School, I am always eager to share the experience of prayer with peers, colleagues, and students. For me, prayer has been a gift and a mystery, something that is received, and that has been unfolding in different ways throughout my life. At this time of Thanksgiving, I am truly grateful for how the shared experience of prayer in the Christian community has brought me closer to Jesus, to my true self, and to greater freedom in responding to God s invitations in my everyday life. The Finding God program has reminded me again of this great gift of prayer and how it is so profoundly expressed in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. It has been almost six years since I completed a thirty-day retreat in the Spiritual Exercises, but the graces of this time set apart for prayer continue to unfold in my life. At the heart of the Exercises is a threefold movement in prayer. First, it leads the people making the retreat to a deepened awareness of the gifts in their life. Next, it calls forth gratitude for a God who has blessed us with these gifts and who desires to give us God s very self. Finally, it leads us to a freedom to respond in love through a life of service. The final meditation of the Exercises, the Contemplation to Attain Love, invites one to pray for the grace of interior knowledge of all the great good I have received, in order that, stirred to profound gratitude, I may be able to love and serve God in all things. Each meditation calls for a composition of place in which we imagine the landscape of our prayer and place ourselves into the scene using all of our five senses. During the scene of the final contemplation, we imagine ourselves standing before God and all the angels St. Ignatius Loyola November 21, 2010 Solemnity of Christ the King and saints, and we express both our gratitude and our desire for the freedom to respond in love. On the first night of my retreat I sat down to write in my journal and to ask God for the grace that I desired. I wrote the following: I want to turn to you, Jesus, in a new way and give all that I am, my entire self. Take, Lord, and receive what I offer to you in these thirty days of silence and prayer. At the time I did not know that St. Ignatius had designed the retreat to end with the Contemplation to Attain Love. Ignatius suggests that the focus of the meditation should be on this understanding of love: Love consists in sharing what one has and what one is with those one loves. Love ought to show itself in deeds more than in words. I came to the Spiritual Exercises almost six years ago wanting to meet the Lord in a new way. Jesus was faithful to my desire and poured out his grace in ways that I could not even imagine or dream. I ended the retreat in some way as I began it, but in a very real way starting anew, with a true and wonderful new beginning in my relationship with God and in my life of prayer. On retreat Jesus showed me that his way of love calls each of us to a deeper commitment and a total self-giving. It is a love manifest in prayer and in everyday life, sometimes clearly and boldly, sometimes quietly and subtly, but always drawing us forward and inviting us to more what St. Ignatius called The Magis, expressed so well in the Jesuit charism, Living for the greater glory of God. During this Thanksgiving weekend, I find myself filled with a sense of deep gratitude for the gift of prayer, the grace of the Exercises, and the experience of praying with fellow companions of Jesus in the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola. What a wonderful time to reflect and share together on the gifts of God in our lives, the ways in which Jesus has loved us into greater self-surrender, and how we are called to respond to the unfolding mystery of prayer! - Robert Cortegiano Religion Teacher Saint Ignatius Loyola Grammar School
