1 Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street New York, New York (212) B u i l d i n g a C o m m u n i t y o f D i s c i p l e s December 12, 2010 Third Sunday of Advent The Beauty of Sacred Music The musical tradition of the Catholic Church is a treasure of immeasurable value, greater even than that of any other art. (From the Vatican II document, Sacrosanctum Concilium-Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 112) We at St. Ignatius Loyola Church are stewards of this treasure year-round, but are especially aware of the beauty of sacred music in this Advent and Christmas Season. The music we sing and hear at worship unites our hearts and voices and heightens our sense of mystery and holiness. Architecture, sculpture, painting, and music, moved by the Christian mystery, have found in the Eucharist, both directly and indirectly, a source of great inspiration (Pope John Paul II in his encyclical, Ecclesia de Eucharistica, 2003.) Or, as Pope Benedict said at Regensburg, Music and song are more than an embellishment of worship; they are themselves part of the liturgical action. Solemn sacred music is not therefore a kind of addition that frames the liturgy and makes it more pleasing but an important means of active participation in worship. I was privileged to serve as a clinician at a convention of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians this past summer in Detroit, Michigan. My role was to lead a choir of musicians drawn from Catholic music directors from across the country in a program of inspirational choral music. These people are the rank and file musicians who are out there in the trenches. These devoted organists, pianists, and choir directors strive to make the very best music with the resources of talent and facility which God has provided to them. They are an amazing and inspiring people. Before and after rehearsals, I was moved to hear of their admiration for the music program here at St. Ignatius. Before these sessions, during breaks, time and again participants shared with me their belief that the music program at St. Ignatius in New York City was for them a beacon of light, an illustrious example of the potential to raise the spirit of community through music ministry. At our culminating performance, they were able to sing music which is very much a part of the St. Ignatius liturgical program, and they did it beautifully! To the extent they are able, these 100 plus musicians plan to take this music back to their parish choirs, with a re-energized mandate to bring their music at worship to a new level! As I listened to these people sing, I couldn t help but hear the voice of our congregation raised in song. Here at St. Ignatius, music is much more than an embellishment. It is a fundamental means of participation in the holy mysteries and the sacraments. This participation is mostly active (as we sing hymns and the music of the Mass), sometimes less active (as we listen to Gregorian chant or an organ Prelude), but always prayerful. The diversity of our Music Ministries at St. Ignatius reflects our commitment to serve the People of God where they are whether through the spontaneity of the ensemble at the Wallace Hall Mass, the austere beauty of Gregorian chant sung by the Choir of St. Ignatius Loyola at the Solemn Mass, the spirited singing of our growing Children s Choirs, a mass by Mozart sung by the Parish Community Choir, or the choral prayer offered by Canticum Sacrum. This music mirrors the diversity of our Parish, and metaphorically underlines the social justice tenets of our faith. As Director of Music Ministries, I thank you for your support of this ministry. The Music Staff and I extend our deepest wishes for a Blessed Advent and joyous celebration of the Incarnation! Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth! Kent Tritle Director of Music Ministries Please support the Advent and Christmas Liturgical Music Fund. Details are found in this bulletin.
