1 Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street New York, New York (212) B u i l d i n g a C o m m u n i t y o f D i s c i p l e s Parish Lay Ministry: Following Jesus Some years back, when I first heard the term Lay Ministry, I wasn t sure that I understood its meaning. I knew it was an important part of most Protestant denominations, but I didn t think it applied to Catholicism. It sounded more like a Southern Baptist or Pentecostal term to me. As I have matured, and my spirituality and faith have deepened, so has my understanding of Lay Ministry. The early followers of Jesus did just that: they followed Him. As He ministered to the poor of spirit, the sick, and the hungry, His disciples walked with Him. More than 2,000 years later we are still called to follow Jesus. Many of us do so by participating in Lay Ministries here at St. Ignatius Loyola. Several weeks ago we held a Parish Ministers Day. Eleanor Barba, head of this Ministry, greeted the participants with an insightful interpretation of the loaves and fishes story. This is the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels. Both St. Mark and St. Luke preface the story with Jesus commissioning the disciples to go out to all the towns to do His work. Jesus gave His friends the capacity to perform miracles, and, enthusiastically, they healed the sick and drove out demons in His name. When the disciples returned, they planned to meet Jesus in a secluded place to relax. But by the time they all arrived, a huge crowd had gathered. As the day wore on, the disciples asked Jesus to send the crowd away because it was getting late and there was no place nearby to find food. St. John records that only one little boy had one basket containing five loaves of barley bread and two small fish. Jesus said to His disciples, Feed the crowd yourselves. He was, in essence, telling them, You have been given the gift to perform miracles and here is a basket with food. You feed them. But they didn t get the message. After instructing the disciples to seat the multitude, Jesus asked the boy for the food in his basket. Although he probably knew that he would be in trouble when he arrived home with an empty basket, the boy said yes to Jesus. He trusted Jesus and gave Him all that he had. The result was that the crowd was fed and there were twelve baskets filled with pieces left over from the five barley loaves! Coptic Icon of Christ Feeding the Multitude October 25, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Eleanor went on to say that this miracle was a lesson in Lay Ministry. The boy was one person in the crowd and was outside the established loop of Jesus friends. Jesus asked for his help, and he gave Jesus all that he had. He held nothing back. Eleanor concluded, I had heard and read this miracle story hundreds of times before I understood its personal message. It speaks to my human nature in assessing what it will cost me if I say yes when Jesus asks for my help in continuing His ministry. It is more than just lending a hand with the distribution of the items in someone else s basket. It is giving what I have at this particular point in my life, and trusting that I will end up with more than I originally gave to the Lord. I completely agree with Eleanor. Giving my all to Jesus, alongside others of like mind and spirit, binds us together in a unique and blessed way. At each Mass this Commissioning Weekend, the Presider will ask all Lay Ministers in our Parish to come forward. He will bless these men and women and commission them to go forth and serve Jesus and the community. We expect approximately 200 individuals will receive this blessing. The works performed by these ministers range from those which are quite visible like Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, and the members of Hospitality, to those more behind the scenes like Ministers of Social Justice, Bereavement, and St. Vincent de Paul, among others. We are a strong and vibrant community of disciples. It is our desire that every member of our Parish family feel welcome. If you have been hearing God s call and are not sure which Ministry would be a good fit for you, please join us for Ministry Night, next Wednesday, October 28th at 7:00 PM in Wallace Hall. Ministers will be on hand to explain what their Ministries are doing, and will answer any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you next Wednesday and having you join us in Lay Ministry here at St. Ignatius Loyola in the weeks and months ahead. Pattie Hughes, Chair Pastor s Ministry Council A very special thank you to Eleanor Barba for sharing her insights with us.

She can be reached at or kingk@stignatiusloyola.org The commissioning of Parish Ministers will take place at all Masses this weekend FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE: Swine Flu Concerns Due to concerns about the Swine Flu virus, some parishioners have asked if they should refrain from shaking hands during the sign of peace at Mass. It is important to emphasize that the invitation to offer the sign of peace permits the individual parishioners to choose how that sign will be expressed. For example, some parishioners may choose to wave their hands or nod their heads as a sign of peace. While shaking hands is not obligatory, it is another acceptable expression of the sign of peace. Consequently, those parishioners who are concerned about spreading the swine flu virus by shaking hands at the sign of peace should express peace in another manner. The faithful are also advised to practice good hygiene and hand washing. If they are ill, they should not receive from the cup. Note: All Eucharistic Ministers at St. Ignatius Loyola are sanitizing their hands before Mass. We pray for the faithful departed Bernard Curr y Alicia Bougan-Cordon May they rest in the peace of the Risen Lord Announced Masses and Scripture Readings for the Week Monday, October 26th (30th in Ordinary Time) Romans 8:12-17 Psalm 68 Luke 13: :30 MEM Dr. Emil Wittek 12:10 MEM Mary C.
