1 Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street New York, New York (212) B u i l d i n g a C o m m u n i t y o f D i s c i p l e s September 6, rd Sunday in Ordinary Time A Personal View: Fr. Jim Dugan, S.J. August 15th of this year, namely, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I began my new assignment of pastoral ministry here in the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola. That date also marked my 45th anniversary as a member of the Society of Jesus and the New York Province of the Jesuit order and 36 years a Roman Catholic priest. My spiritual journey here has been a happy and graced filled one for which I give thanks to the Lord every day. I was blessed to have grown up in an openminded family that was marked by a strong Judeo-Christian faith since my maternal grandfather was a German Jew. Given that my maternal grandmother was Catholic there was also a deep mutual respect for both religions. This Catholic faith was reinforced when my mother was baptized and confirmed at the age of 16 and later married my father who came from a long line of Irish Catholics. Much of my life was rather ordinary: public grammar and high school in Buffalo with some remarkable teachers, weekly and sometimes daily Mass at my parish church, the Cathedral. At Canisius College I majored in English and Philosophy, both of which I have taught during my career at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, Regis High School, and Xavier High School. I entered the Jesuits in From that moment on my ordinary life became extraordinary. I had learned in college to pray as a member of the Sodality of our Lady, today, the Christian Life Community, but the two year school of prayer in our novitiate with the 30 day and 8 day experiences of the Spiritual Exercises was a gentle but truly life-transforming passage. This journey continued as I did my philosophical studies at Boston College. From there I went on to teach this subject at Canisius College, Notre Dame University s Innsbruck program, and Loyola University of Chicago and Saint Mary s College programs in Rome. I also worked for ten years in the counseling center at Canisius College doing brief psychotherapy and teaching one course in philosophy each semester. My theology studies were done at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, the University of Innsbruck, and Woodstock College here in New York. Along the way, in my life of study and formation as a Jesuit, I had what the Greek-Armenian mystic G.I. Gurdjieff referred to as Meetings with Remarkable Men, fellow Jesuit scholars, teachers, priests and spiritual guides. I was called back to Rome where I served as librarian for 12 years at the Pontifical Oriental Institute and, then, most recently another 7 years at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. In addition to these 19 years in the area of administration, I can add 2 years as the executive assistant to the Provincial of the New York Province. First and foremost, a Jesuit s journey is a spiritual journey of love. It would be difficult to find more eloquent words than those attributed to our former General Superior Fr. Pedro Arrupe: Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the mornings, what you will do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything. Fr. Jim Dugan, S.J. This is a part of my journey as a Jesuit which I love and has filled my life with passion, power, and love. Teilhard de Chardin said, Nothing is profane to those who know how to see. St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus and his heroic band of followers have helped me to hear God s call and shown me how to see, to see the stars, especially where there is great darkness and we are seeking the way. In this same spirit, St. Paul exhorts us to pray always. This is my life as a Jesuit. I invite you to join me and all true believers to be in uninterrupted communion with the Lord our God. - Rev. James L. Dugan, S.J.

3 UPCOMING ACTIVITIES LIFE, LOVE, DEATH: A seminar of personal exploration and healing Thursday evenings October 1 - November 19 7:30-9:00 PM Fr. Jim Dugan, S.J, will lead a group willing to share their understanding and experiences of the themes and mysteries life, love, and death - in ordinary human and Judeo-Christian faith development. After a brief introduction, participants will be invited to share through their favorite readings, music, art, personal stories and writings, etc., their reflections and individual approaches to comprehending and integrating the reality of life, love, and death into their daily existence. The direction and goal of this group is twofold: to open up the horizons of these realities and, in this way, to overcome limited or distorted concepts which inhibit a deeper appropriation of the value and healing power contained within these universal cultural and religious human experiences. The seminar, which will be limited to 12 participants, will run for seven weeks and is scheduled for Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 PM: October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, November 12, 19.
