1 Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 1 November 2017 Dear Parishioners, The joy of the Gospel takes on hues of vibrant colors and rich texture each time we gather to worship in our magnificent church or join a festive event or lecture in Wallace Hall. We count among our blessings the ability to seek spiritual guidance in the Parish House and to have our children educated at our day nursery and grammar school. Our faith journey as parishioners also invites us to look beyond the territorial boundaries of our parish to encounter the world and respond to voices crying out for compassion, justice, and reconciliation. We can justifiably take pride in being disciples of Jesus Christ who have fashioned our identity around the Ignatian principles of prayer, service, and community. From an impressive array of cultural, national, and familial backgrounds we have created a home here on Park Avenue where we care for each other and for those who come to our door in need. To sum this up quite simply, we are the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola. There is no doubt that our most precious assets are the individuals and families who call St. Ignatius their spiritual home, their parish. By this accounting alone, I can assure you that our future is secure and bright. More than 500 parishioners regularly volunteer their time in the various ministries of the parish to build up the kingdom of God through their service to us and those who reach out to us in their time of need. We are truly blessed by the commitment and affection of so many among us who nurture the very lifeblood of our home at St. Ignatius. As you might suspect, your financial support makes possible everything we do. The collections at weekend and weekday Masses provide a stream of revenue to support parish activities. However, this source of income is not sufficient to maintain the operating budget of the parish. We continue to rely on the Annual Appeal to supplement the funds necessary to finance the operations of the church, the quality of our liturgical celebrations, the upkeep of our physical plant, the education of our children, and much, much more. I now ask you to support the 2017 Annual Appeal with a contribution as generous as your means will allow. The funds raised through this Appeal will help us to sustain our vibrant tradition of witnessing to our faith in ways which redound to the greater glory of God. Thank you for your generous response to the 2017 Annual Appeal, and may the blessings of God refresh you with joy! Sincerely in the Lord, Dennis J. Yesalonia, S.J. 3 This annual report will present the financial condition of the parish. It is a way of looking at the parish by the numbers. The dollars and cents of the report reveal the scale of operations of a complex enterprise which requires a significant amount of money to fund what we do. Our parish ministries, liturgical celebrations, lectures, concert series, grammar school and day nursery, service and outreach programs, and spirituality resources are supported through the generous contributions of parishioners. However, to look at the parish by the numbers alone would fail to depict who we are as the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola. To capture the essence of what makes our parish such a valued place in our lives we need to look at the faces of those who bring to life the faith we profess as a Catholic community inspired by the Ignatian Way of prayer, service, and community. The expressions of our faith have been palpable throughout this past year. The joy of the gospel has not been for us a lofty ideal. Rather we have been animated by our belief in Jesus Christ to herald in word and actions a message of hope to a world yearning for healing and reconciliation. What we do together has brought warm smiles to our faces and to the faces of those whom we serve through our parish ministries. We have been blessed this past year. With God s grace as our shelter and our strength, we have made a difference in the lives of countless people. Let us take delight in the warmth of the smiles of all who call the Church of St. Ignatius their home and review some of the highlights of this past fiscal year which account for many of these smiles. 7 The Parish Annual Report for Fiscal Year will show a modest operating surplus of $75,356 which is significantly lower than last year s surplus and, at the same time, consistent with the downward trend experienced over the last 3 fiscal years. There are a number of factors which contribute to this reduction in the operating surplus. Expenses increased in FY17 because of such one-time special events as the celebration of our sesquicentennial anniversary and other liturgical celebrations. New programs and activities in support of parish ministries were brought online while revenue in support of these new initiatives remained relatively stable. The good news to report is that the financial condition of the parish is strong which is due, in large part, to your continued support of our ministries and the mission of the parish. The financial detail of FY17, prepared by our Treasurer, Fernando Castro, is as follows: Revenue Church of St. Ignatius Loyola Operating Revenue Report, Although the fiscal year ended with a modest surplus, the total operating revenue for FY17 reflects a modest decrease of 2.0% as compared to the prior year. There was some growth in various revenue streams which were offset by shortfalls in other income categories. Overall, the revenue derived from collections was consistent with the prior year. However, there was a 5.0% decrease in the Sunday offertory collections. Collections for Christmas and Easter also experienced 6.0% and 2.0% decreases, respectively. The Annual Appeal, which is a significant source of revenue in support of the operating budget, decreased as compared to the Annual Appeal in FY16. This was offset by a very successful Spring Appeal which was double the amount of the FY16 Spring Appeal. Other Gifts and Collections remained strong. This category consists mainly of large unrestricted donations and restricted funds. Also included in this category is the parish s share of funds which exceed the parish s goal for the Annual Cardinal s Appeal. Sacramental offerings increased 12.0% over FY16 and reversed the downward trend in this category experienced in FY16. Rental income has returned to its historic level after experiencing an unusually large increase in FY16. Revenue attributed to Music Ministry increased 11.0% over FY16. This increase was offset by increased expenses attributed to additional programs being added to the concert series. Enrollment in Interparish Religious Education Program (IREP) decreased in FY17, resulting in a decrease in revenue for this Ministry while expenses remained consistent with FY16. The variance reflected in Other Revenue is the result of a onetime rebate received from the Archdiocese of New York in FY16. Otherwise, revenue in this category was unchanged from FY16. 6

9 Presented by Fr. Richard Leonard, S.J. AT 7PM WALLACE HALL Sposored by Ignatian Social Justice I was a stranger and yo welcoed me. Taking a cue from St. Ignatius, Fr. Sheehan will discuss how God might be calling us to grow in love, wisdom, and holiness, as we face both the opportunities and real challenges that aging brings. We can work on our 401ks, consider other wise investment strategies, play lots of tennis and golf, book exciting cruises, but what is the point if we miss the goal of our lives: TUESDAY, APRIL 18TH entering into the life of God? PANELISTS DR. MEGHAN CLARK Assistant Professor, Theology and Religious Studies St. John s University REV. JAMES MARTIN, S.J. Editor at Large America Media MODERATOR C. MARIO RUSSELL Director, Immigrant and Refugee Services Catholic Charities DR. ANNA BROWN Associate Professor and Chair, Political Science Together There are many different ways we look at and prepare for aging. But, given that we are living longer than ever before, have we ever thought and dreamed about what God is offering us with our longer lives? Commemorating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola and Immanuel Lutheran Church will join together for vespers and reflect upon the CatholicLutheran Joint Declaration on the Justification by Faith. Myles Sheehan, S.J., M.D. Sponsored by Ignatian Social Justice Aging and the Call to Holiness Rather than ignoring the world around us or creating one that is removed from reality, Fr. Leonard encourages the need for honest dialogue, stresses the importance of religious experience but, most importantly, urges the practice of genuine actions for Christ s sake. The Resister Bestselling author Fr. Richard Leonard, S.J., will discuss his book What Are We Doing On Earth for Christ s Sake?, which invites Christians to revisit their faith in the midst of the contemporary world and its challenges. 10 Expenses Church of St. Ignatius Loyola Operating Expense Report, Total operating expenses for FY17 were $4.3 million, which reflects a marginal 5.0% increase over FY16. Not unlike other organizations, the largest parish expense is Personnel costs. Collectively, this category increased by a modest 3.0%, which includes a cost of living raise for staff and the standard increase in health insurance and pension contributions. The increase in the Administration expense is primarily related to our continuing efforts to update computer equipment and infrastructure. Also, we retained the services of a security consultant, which was not originally budgeted, to review all security protocols of the entire physical plant of the parish, including the church, the Parish House, and the grammar school. Our commitment to the security of our parishioners, students, and staff remains a top priority. Considerable cost savings in Facilities expenses related to routine maintenance were realized in FY17, due to changes that were first implemented in FY16. Liturgical expenses increased in FY17 over FY16 due, in part, to the introduction of a cantor for the 8:00 AM Sunday Mass and the enhancement of the church environment during the Christmas and Easter seasons and other special liturgical events. Music Ministry expenses increased 18.0% over FY16 due to additional performances added to the concert series in FY17. Revenue attributed to the Music Ministry likewise increased, as was presented in the Revenue section of this report. The costs related to the series of events celebrating the sesquicentennial anniversary of the parish and other special liturgies are included under the category of Other Activities. Archdiocesan Assessments remained consistent with FY16, and the expenses associated with IREP increased 6.0% as compared to the prior year. Not included in this report are capital expenses incurred for Church improvements. These projects include the reconfiguration of the Treasurer s office to accommodate the need for additional office space in the Parish House; updating the residential rooms of the Parish House; and replacing the fire rated doors in Wallace Hall. A Final Word We are blessed by the growth of our parish and its accompanying activities and programming. However, such growth also requires increased expenditures if we are to be successful in all that we do. I am grateful to the members of the Parish Finance Committee (whose names are listed in this report) and Fernando Castro, the parish treasurer, as we keep an eye on our operating budget and exercise proper stewardship of the financial resources of the parish which are derived from your contributions and financial support. With your continued support and commitment to the parish, we will surely proclaim in word and deed, to a world in need of hope and healing, the gospel message of Jesus Christ and, in the process, bring greater glory to God. May God bless you with an abundance of His compassionate love! In our Lord, Rev. Dennis J. Yesalonia, S.J. Pastor Note: Important ministries of our Parish are represented by the Grammar School and Day Nursery. Their annual operating budgets, respectively, are approximately $5.9 million and $3.2 million. While we are not including information on these budgets in this report, I wish to assure you of the overall financial health and good management of both institutions. We are blessed to have strong leadership provided by our School Principal Mary Larkin and Executive Director Theodora Crist. 9 MEMBERS OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE Rev. Dennis J. Yesalonia, S.J.
