1 Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street New York, New York (212) B u i l d i n g a C o m m u n i t y o f D i s c i p l e s Staff: it is a word with many definitions. Think of bread, the staff of life, or the reed staff that John the Baptist carried as he made his way through the desert of Judea. A staff is something that sustains or supports. This definition could also be applied to those who work here at St. Ignatius. We work to sustain and support the liturgies and ministries offered throughout the year. Did you know that our Parish is made up of approximately 4200 households? We are a large community! In the course of one year we gather more than 1000 times to celebrate the Eucharist. Masses are offered by the four resident Jesuits (Fathers Witt, Bergen, Dugan, and Nacciarone) and assisting Jesuits (Fathers Philip Judge, Jim Martin, and Anthony SooHoo). One of the major responsibilities of the priests is preparing Sunday homilies. The process begins early in the week with the study of Sacred Scripture and commentaries, reflection, prayer, and conversation about the Sunday and Daily Mass readings. Last year we also celebrated 218 Baptisms, 66 Weddings, 30 Funerals, 243 First Communions, 193 Confirmations (conferred by the Bishop), and offered the Sacrament of Reconciliation hundreds of times. Father Witt, our Pastor, is responsible for all aspects of the Parish, which consists of the Church, Grammar School, and Day Nursery. His days range from celebrating Mass and offering spiritual counsel to reading financial reports and blueprints, chairing meetings, and answering countless s and phone calls. His assistant is Diane Boyle, who is also responsible for the bulletin and the website. Father Bergen oversees the Lectors, Eucharistic, and Hospitality Ministers, and RCIA. Father Ugo is advisor to the Ignatian Social Justice Ministry and Lay Ministers Enrichment Program. Father Dugan advises the Spiritual Community Reading Group as well as our newest ministry, 40s and Fabulous. We are blessed to have an outstanding Grammar School, which was designated a National Blue Ribbon School 2011 by the U.S. Department of Education. Saint Ignatius Loyola School has an enrollment of 541 students, a faculty of 35, and is led by Principal Mary Larkin. St. Ignatius Day Nursery, now in its 101st year, is led by Executive Director Theodora Crist. There are 133 children enrolled in full and half-day programs and a staff of 14 teachers. Our Interparish Religious Education program is directed by Joanne Cunneen. This year 23 IREP teachers are instructing 580 K-8 students in the Catholic faith. Joanne also teaches religion to grades K 3 at the Grammar School ( Coming to God s House ) and Bible Study to the 4th graders. Newly added this year is the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program for 3 and 4 year olds, which is being taught by Adele Gallo. Joanne also prepares couples who are planning their weddings at St. Ignatius and parents whose babies will be baptized here. Joanne is assisted by Patricia Schneider, who also maintains the Parish records and Sacramental lists. The Parish Staff March 11, 2012 Third Sunday of Lent Sister Kathryn King, FSP, oversees the Emmaus Bereavement Program, Compassionate Care, Prayer Shawl Ministry, Meeting Christ in Prayer, and Boomers & Beyond. Sister Kathryn also offers individual spiritual direction and facilitates retreats, including the 19th Annotation Retreat, throughout the year. Embracing a wide range of musical styles, engaging over 200 volunteers, and driven by a dedicated staff, our Music Department enriches the prayer of our Community in over 400 liturgies per year and presents inspiring concerts through the Sacred Music in a Sacred Space Concert series. Led this year by Interim Director of Music K. Scott Warren, the team includes associate organist Nancianne Parrella, associate musicians Robert Reuter and Michael Sheetz, Children s and High School Choir Director Mary Huff, Principal Cantor Philip Anderson, and Sacred Music in a Sacred Space Executive Director and Music Department Administrator Sara Murphy. Together they lead the Choir and Orchestra of St. Ignatius Loyola, the Children s and High School Choirs, Parish Community Choir, Wallace Hall Choir, and Canticum Sacrum at weekly liturgies, in acclaimed recording projects, and in world-class concerts. Fernando Castro, Treasurer of the Church, Grammar School, and Day Nursery, works closely with the Pastor on budget and financial matters. In addition, Fernando and his staff handle payroll, check requests, accounts payable functions, and banking responsibilities. Fernando also supervises the Information Technology Department. Mary Reed, Director of Development, is responsible for the implementation all fundraising projects, including the Annual Collection, Spring Appeal, future campaign initiatives, major gifts, and planned giving. Mary, along with the Treasurer, manages and oversees the use of our new fundraising software and the launching of our online giving program. Mary collaborates with the Development Committee on current and upcoming fundraising endeavors. If you visit the Parish House you will be greeted by one of our Receptionists, who do a masterful job of coordinating the daily flow of traffic. Each of these individuals makes sure that parishioners and visitors are warmly welcomed and assisted as needed. Our physical plant is managed by Chester Ciupinski, Director of Facilities, who oversees a team of six staff members. Considering that upwards of a dozen liturgies/meetings/activities can take place during the course of a single day, we are indebted to Chester and his team for making sure that the Church and Parish House are properly prepared. There are also hundreds of parishioners who volunteer their time to our Parish Community. It would be impossible for the Parish Staff to offer the wide variety of programs and ministries that we do without them. As we continue our Lenten journey, we offer a prayer of thanksgiving for these individuals who sustain and support us in our service to God. Ms. Diane M. Boyle Assistant to the Pastor Rev. James L. Dugan, S.J. Associate Pastor

Monday, March 19th at 7:30 PM PARISH LENTEN RECONCILIATION SERVICE Sunday, March 25th at 1:00 PM STATIONS OF THE CROSS for Children and Families Monday March 26th at 7:30 PM STATIONS OF THE CROSS for the Parish Community EASTER SUNDAY, APRIL 8TH Please note the change in Mass times on Easter Sunday: 7:30 AM - Organ/Cantor 9:00 AM - Organ/Cantor 10:30 AM - Organ/Cantor/Choirs/Brass 11:00 AM (Wallace Hall Family Mass) Piano/Choirs NOON (Solemn) - Organ/Cantor/Choirs/Brass 7:30 PM - Organ/Cantor What is different at Mass during Lent? During the season of Lent the hymn Gloria in Excelsis Deo is omitted in all Masses. This hymn is very ancient, going back at least to the third century, and perhaps even earlier. Its opening words are taken from the hymn of the angels who appeared to the shepherds at the birth of Jesus. Its musical settings are always joyous, in keeping with the hymn s origins. The Church considers it inappropriate during the penitential season of Lent to be singing such a hymn. It is sung on the solemnities of St. Joseph, of the Annunciation, and on Holy Thursday. Its absence reminds us of the serious nature of this season, and its return at Easter will be an experience of great joy. 2 CHANGE FOR CHANGE: We are collecting donations throughout Lent for the Catholic Medical Mission Board. The Collection period runs from Ash Wednesday to the end of April. Loose change, bills, and checks (made out to Church of St. Ignatius Loyola ) are welcome! Please bring donations to the Parish House in care of Joanne Cunneen. PLEASE OPEN FOR PAGES 3 AND 4

Copies are available in the Narthex, at the Parish House, and online at FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE Next weekend our Parish will take up the Catholic Relief Services Collection. Thank you in advance for your generosity. OFFICE OF THE CARDINAL 1011 FIRST AVENUE NEW YORK, NY March 11, 2012 Dear Friends in the Lord: Though I no longer serve as chair of Catholic Relief Services, I remain very much aware of and grateful for the extraordinary work that it does in the Lord s name across the globe. No less than 19 regions of the world are served by its very competent and dedicated staff on behalf of our less fortunate brothers and sisters in the Lord. Relief and resettlement services to victims of war and natural disasters, development programs to improve the living conditions of the poor, advocacy on behalf of the powerless, peace and reconciliation work for those suffering from violence, unification of families, and protection of those fleeing persecution or civil unrest, assistance to thousands of sustenance farmers, and support for agencies such as the Holy Father s Relief Fund and the Migration and Refugees Services of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops are some of the ways in which Catholic Relief Services serves the Lord and His Church. And here s another reason to be proud of Catholic Relief Services: it limits its overhead expenses, including advertising, to under 5% of the money it collects, while many non-profit organizations are not able to do as much for less than 12%. Thus it is that I ask you to be as generous as you can to this year s Catholic Relief Services collection, to be taken up in our parishes on the weekend of March 17th and March 18th. With prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ, +Timothy Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a program of religious formation for young children, ages 3 and 4.
