1 Church of St. Ignatius Loyola 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street New York, New York (212) B u i l d i n g a C o m m u n i t y o f D i s c i p l e s I have just returned from a ten day pilgrimage to the Holy Land with 23 other pilgrims, several of whom were from the parish. We visited and celebrated Mass in many of the most important sites in the life of Jesus. On our final day, we made the Way of the Cross, following the route of Jesus. It would be hard to describe the experience. Much of the route goes through the old city, and we prayed and sang as we passed through narrow crowded streets filled with people doing their shopping or just returning home. Our guide asked me whether we wanted to have the 8th station in the market or just outside. Since the 8th station is Jesus comforts the women of Jerusalem, I said I would like to pray that station in the market area, for I felt that was where Jesus would have met the women. As we moved through the streets, I reflected on just what it means to call Jesus our King. This experience reminded me of another. On the feast of Christ the King in Cape Coast, Ghana, the archbishop would march in procession behind a litter under a large umbrella. On the litter was the monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament. The litter was carried on the shoulders of six men. This was the customary way of carrying a chief on special occasions. There would be crowds of people before and behind the chief, and they would be singing and dancing. The procession would move through the marketplace and through residential areas until it reached a large public park. Both of these experiences, the Stations of the Cross in Jerusalem and the procession in Cape Coast remind us of what we are celebrating this final Sunday of Ordinary Time, the Solemnity of Christ the King. I believe it means that we allow Jesus to enter into all aspects of our life. He cannot be confined to our Churches and chapels. We must take him to Wall Street and Main Street, Christ Our King November 25, 2012 Solemnity of Christ the King into the homes and homeless shelters of our people. We must take him into the halls of Congress and the White House as well as into the Supreme Court. Until his spirit and his values are expressed in all decisions made in these places, then he is not yet king. It is in line with this thought that the Second Vatican Council brought new inspiration to the work of the laity. In the decree on the role of the laity, we read: Our own times require of the laity no less zeal: in fact, modern conditions demand that their apostolate be broadened and intensified. With a constantly increasing population, continual progress in science and technology, and closer interpersonal relationships, the areas for the lay apostolate have been immensely widened particularly in fields that have been for the most part open to the laity alone. Besides, in many places where priests are very few or, in some instances, deprived of due freedom for priestly work, the Church could scarcely exist and function without the activity of the laity. An indication of this manifold and pressing need is the unmistakable work being done today by the Holy Spirit in making the laity ever more conscious of their own responsibility and encouraging them to serve Christ and the Church in all circumstances (Introduction, Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity: Apostolicam Actuositatem). The important words in this declaration are in all circumstances. When we look at our broken world, whether in the politics of our own country, or the endless wars and tensions in so many parts of the world, not least in the land where Jesus himself once lived, we realize that Christ is not yet king in our world. Let us pray and work for the coming of his kingdom, so that the annual commemoration of this solemnity is more than a liturgical celebration. Rev. Ugo Nacciarone, S.J. Associate Pastor

These analyze where progress has been made and where further growth is necessary. This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ Our King which marks the final week of the liturgical year. It is appropriate, therefore, for us to take stock of our spiritual lives, especially in the context of the Year of Faith. Let us consider how many times we turn to God in prayer. Do we begin and end our day in praise of the Presence of the Divine in our lives? Do we meditate upon the Scriptures? Is attending Mass a priority every Lord s Day? Do we encourage our family and friends to join us in raising up our hearts and minds to God? The faith we love must reveal itself in acts which give flesh to our hopes and prayers. Do we leave our comfort zone and serve the Lord in practical ways? Do we welcome the opportunity to serve others? As Cardinal Dolan recently stated: We kneel in penance because we are profoundly sorry for our faults and our sins. But then we stand forgiven, resolute to return to the work entrusted to us as evangelizers of the Gospel of Mercy. As Advent nears, let us acknowledge that this is a great start to moving towards greater unity with God and one another. 4 We pray for the faithful departed: Robert Meder May he rest in the peace of the Risen Lord Announced Masses and Readings for the Week Monday, November 26th (St. John Berchmans) Revelation 14:1-3, 4b-5 Psalm 24 Luke 21:1-4 8:30 MEM Dr. Emil Wittek 12:10 MEM Elizabeth Lucille Perry 5:30 MEM John Figge Tuesday, November 27th (34th Tuesday in Ordinary Time) Revelation 14:14-19 Psalm 96 Luke 21:5-11 8:30 MEM Rose Bernabei 12:10 LVG Siobhán & John Duffy & Family 5:30 MEM Mary Lou Walsh Wednesday, November 28th (34th Wednesday in Ordinary Time) Revelation 15:1-4 Psalm 98 Luke 21: :30 MEM Karen Mason Jones 12:10 MEM William E. Fordham University, Pope Auditorium, 113 West 60th Street. Free and open to the public. Catholic sisters have exercised a dramatic influence for generations, building a vast parochial school system, pioneering higher education for women, and founding hospitals and social services. Responding to Vatican II s call for renewal in the 1960s, they expanded beyond these ministries, embracing social activism and missionary work, exploring fresh currents in spirituality and theology, and championing human dignity and rights. How has the sisters ministry changed the face of the Church in recent decades? Where are they called today?
