1 St. Joh XXIII Catholic Church Palomio Lae, Fort Myers, FL P F September 23, 2018 ORIGIN OF THE Holy Rosary by: Fr. William Sauders T he rosary is oe of the most cherished prayers of our Catholic Church. Archbishop Fulto Shee said, The rosary is the book of the blid, where souls see ad there eact the greatest drama of love the world has ever kow; it is the book of the simple, which iitiates them ito mysteries ad kowledge more satisfyig tha the educatio of other me; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upo the shadow of this world, ad ope o the substace of the ext. The power of the rosary is beyod descriptio. I troduced by the Creed, the Our Father, three Hail Marys ad the Doxology ( Glory Be ), ad cocluded with the Salve Regia, the rosary ivolves the recitatio of five decades cosistig of the Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, ad the Doxology. Durig this recitatio, the idividual meditates o the savig mysteries of our Lord s life ad the faithful witess of our Blessed Mother. Joureyig through the Joyful, Lumious, Sorrowful ad Glorious mysteries of the rosary, the idividual brigs to mid our Lord s icaratio, His public miistry, His passio ad death, ad His resurrectio from the dead. I so doig, the rosary assists us i growig i a deeper appreciatio of these mysteries, i uitig our lives more closely to our Lord ad i implorig His graced assistace to live the faith. We also ask for the prayers of our Blessed Mother, the exemplar of faith, who leads all believers to her So. T he origis of the rosary are sketchy at best. The use of prayer beads ad the repeated recitatio of prayers to aid i meditatio stem from the earliest days of the Church ad has roots eve i pre-christia times. Evidece exists from the Middle Ages that strigs of beads were used to help a perso cout the umber of Our Fathers or Hail Marys recited. Actually, these strigs of beads became kow as Paterosters, the Lati for Cotiued o Page 3 St. Joh XXIII Catholic Parish i Fort Myers, Ic. a Florida o-profit corporatio

For example, i the 12th cetury, to help the ueducated better participate i the liturgy, the recitatio of 150 Our Fathers served as a substitute for the 150 Psalms, ad became kow as the poor ma s breviary. T he structure of the rosary gradually evolved betwee the 12th ad 15th ceturies. Evetually 50 Hail Marys (or more) were recited ad were liked with verses of psalms or other phrases evokig the joys of Mary, i.e. scees i the lives of Jesus ad Mary. I 1409 Domiic of Prussia, a Carthusia mok, popularized the practice settig 50 phrases about the lives of Jesus ad Mary with 50 Hail Marys. Durig this time, this prayer form became kow as the rosarium ( rose garde ), actually a commo term used to desigate a collectio of similar material, such as a athology of stories o the same subject or theme. Evetually, the sorrows of Mary ad the heavely joys were distiguished, brigig the umber of Hail Marys to 150. Evetually, the 150 Hail Marys were joied to the 150 Our Fathers, a Hail Mary followig each Our Father. I the early 15th cetury, Hery Kalkar (d. 1408), aother Carthusia, divided the 150 Hail Marys ito groups of 10, with each group marked by a Our Father. By the 16th cetury, the structure of the five-decade rosary was based o the three sets of mysteries joyful (Auciatio, Visitatio, Nativity, Presetatio ad Fidig i the Temple), sorrowful (Agoy i the Garde, Scourgig, Crowig with Thors, Carryig of the Cross ad Death) ad glorious (Resurrectio, Ascesio, Petecost, Assumptio ad Coroatio). I 2002, our beloved late Holy Father, Pope Joh Paul II, istituted the lumious mysteries: Baptism at the Jorda, Weddig Feast of Caa, Proclamatio of the Kigdom of God, Trasfiguratio ad Istitutio of the holy Eucharist. Also, after the apparitios of Our Lady at Fatima i 1917, the prayer Mary taught to the childre has geerally bee added at the ed of each decade: O my Jesus, forgive us our sis, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heave, especially those i greatest eed of Thy mercy. T raditio does hold that St. Domiic (d. 1221) devised the rosary as we kow it. Moved by a visio of our Blessed Mother, he preached the use of the rosary i his missioary work amog the Albigesias, a group of faatical heretics. The Albigesias, amed after the tow of Albi i souther Frace where they lived, believed that everythig material was evil ad everythig spiritual was good. For this reaso, they deied the icaratio of our Lord; for them, Jesus the true God becomig also true ma ad acceptig our huma ature was simply uthikable. Followig this teachig, each perso s soul was imprisoed i the evil body. Therefore, they abstaied from marital love, because o oe should impriso aother soul i a body. Their greatest act of religio was called the edura, a act of suicide which freed the soul from the body. They also fought agaist ay authority that represeted a kigdom of this world, assassiatig royal ad Church officials alike. The Church codemed these heretics, ad St. Domiic tried to covert them through reasoable preachig ad geuie Christia love. Ufortuately, royal authority was less compassioate. (Just as a aside, a travel show televised a program o souther Frace, ad visited the tow of Albi, otig that these people were persecuted by the Church ; the arrator failed to report that these people were suicidal heretics whose teachigs jeopardized the souls of the faithful.) Nevertheless, St. Domiic used the rosary as a useful istrumet to covert the Albigesias. S ome scholars take exceptio to St. Domiic s actual role i formig the rosary sice the earliest accouts of his life do ot metio it, the Domiica costitutios do ot lik him with it, ad cotemporaeous paitigs of St. Domiic do ot iclude it as a symbol to idetify the sait. I 1922, Dom Louis Gougaud stated, The various elemets which eter ito the compositio of that Catholic devotio commoly called the rosary are the product of a log ad gradual developmet which bega before St. Domiic s time, which cotiued without his havig ay share i it, ad which oly attaied its fial shape several ceturies after his death. However, other scholars would argue that St. Domiic ot so much iveted the rosary as he preached its use to covert siers ad those who had strayed from the Faith. Moreover, at least a doze popes have metioed St. Domiic s coectio with the rosary i various papal prooucemets, sactioig his role as at least a pious belief. The first such metio was made by Pope Alexader VI i PAGE 3

This declaratio of war is ot agaist flesh ad blood; but agaist pricipalities ad power, agaist the rulers of the world of this darkess, agaist the spirits of wickedess i the high places.
