1 St. Joh XXIII Catholic Church Palomio Lae, Fort Myers, FL P F September 10, 2017 Remember September A TEACHER S REFLECTION OF 9/11 by: Clayto Atkis - Bishop Verot Teacher I wrote this piece last year, the day before the 15th aiversary of 9/11. I wrote it because I was curious about how people coceive of historically importat evets that they do ot remember persoally. I teach high school Eglish. Whe my studets come ito my room, they are expected to sped the first 5 miutes of class writig i their jourals. Usually, I allow them to write about whatever they wat, as log as words come out o paper. Sometimes, whe I wat to get a good read o how my classes thik about a topic, I ask them to respod to a prompt that I have writte. I decided that I wated to kow how a buch of kids (who were oly 1-3 years old i 2001) fit this mometous historical evet ito their coceptio of the world. Whe I started thikig about that day, I realized that I curretly teach my classes i the very same room of Bishop Verot Catholic High School that I was i o 09/11/2001, whe I foud out about the World Trade Ceter attack. For some reaso, this fact was lost o me, eve though I ve taught classes i this room for the last two years of my life. I was attemptig to get my studets thikig beyod their arrow world of experiece. I wated them to see that their teachers are people too, who were oce i high school, dealig with whatever adolescet thigs we had to deal with. I wated them to see this evet, which to them is othig more tha a sectio i their history books, or a documetary that airs oce every year aroud this time, as a real thig that happeed to people. I wated to see how people who have o memory of a historic tragedy, coceive of such a thig. Here s what I wrote: Yesterday was the fifteeth aiversary of the September Eleveth terrorist attacks o the World Trade Ceter, the Petago, ad Uited Airlies Flight 93. Most of you were very youg whe this occurred. Me? I just so happeed to be seated i this very room. I was a freshma i a World History Hoors class. Lookig back o that day ow, my memory fails me: I ca oly summo short flashes of scees; brief momets i time are all that come to mid. I remember sittig i a desk just like the oe you re sittig i ow, i a row just like the oe you re i, starig at the back of some kid s head, midlessly doodlig i my otebook. Havig already completed my respose to our curret evet of the day, I was just about to close my otebook, reach ito my backpack, ad heave out my World History textbook (we had thick, massive textbooks, which we could t possibly carry aroud all day, so i that impossibly short four miutes i betwee classes, we had to use the bathroom, decode a lock, switch out our gigatic tomes, lock everythig back up, ad scurry through the door of our ext class before the bell...so I guess I was exhausted from all of that) whe the loudspeaker diged. This was a ormal occurrece. We were at Verot: the loudspeaker diged just about every day with some special aoucemet, or some special update about some special schedule or evet. But this dig was differet. Normally, the loudspeaker dig was followed by a reasoable secod of silece before whatever was to be spoke was actually spoke; but this dig this dig wet off like a gushot, ot because it was particularly loud, but because of the deafeig silece that followed it. High above all the ormal oise of the classroom AC churig, fluorescet tubes hummig, pes tappig I could hear the death of authority: whoever decided to dig that loudspeaker, had t decided what he was goig to say oce he did. I could tell that it was a ma. The breathig was that of a ma, but it was the breathig of a ma at a loss for words. Usually, that dig sigified a authoritative decree: Studets, Faculty, ad Staff, tomorrow s luch period will be shorteed by te miutes to allow for adoratio i the chapel ; Studet s, tomorrow s dress code will be strictly eforced ; Good morig Verot, let us joi i sayig the Directio of Itetio. This dig, however, ligered i the air, attemptig to drow out the tortured breathig of whoever was at the microphoe. Maybe the silece oly lasted for a secod loger tha it usually did. What s importat is that, to me, right ow, I remember it lastig a eterity. Whe the silece fially gave way to speech, everyoe i the room must have bee struck by the gravity i the speaker s toe: o oe spoke; agai, there was a silece so severe, that it seeped ito my ski ad crept ito my boes I kew that this was o ormal special aoucemet. I do t remember how it was phrased, but I do remember satches of speech, like...plaes have crashed ito the World Trade Ceter...,...usure of casualties..., ad...pray for the people of New York.... I do t remember the loudspeaker voice istructig ayoe to do so, but our teacher tured the classroom TV to the ews. I remember watchig the ews coverage ad ot really graspig what was goig o. I remember ot graspig what was goig o for the rest of the day. I remember everyoe o campus filig ito the ewly costructed Aderso Theater ad holdig a prayer service. I remember meaderig past the library o my way to my locker after luch, seeig more ews coverage o the TVs iside, ad my best fried declarig: Look at that! It s so fake! Who could believe this? Ad, for a istat, it did seem fake. I was bor ito a America that had t bee seriously attacked by a foreig power sice Pearl Harbor. How could this happe? But eve i the throes of oe of the most sigificat evets i world history; eve while I witessed adults whom I respected teachers, admiistrators, parets break dow ad cry, uable to come up with ay aswers, aythig that would comfort a youg freshma i the ed, I did t care. I was so absorbed i my ow life, that this mometous evet, which would fudametally alter the course of history, had almost o immediate impact o my daily life. I remember my mother pickig me up from school like ay ormal day. She must have bee upset, but I simply requested that she take me to the comic book store o the way home; there was a ew editio of Spiderma that I was axious to read. Lookig back, I suppose that she just appeased my desires, thikig that I d already bee through eough that day ad deserved some distractio. But othig could be further from the truth: I was youg, aïve, ad hell-bet o livig my privileged America life. It was t util later that eveig that thigs fell ito focus. I remember waitig for dier to be ready, sprawled out o the couch, fiishig my Spiderma comic. It was t util I had read the last frame of the issue that I fully realized that the ews was o the televisio. I closed the comic, placed it o the ed table, ad tured my attetio to the scree: footage of the towers beig hit, burig, ad implodig ito a pillar of fire, dust, ad ash replayed over ad over agai. It bega to hypotize me. My thoughts bega to shift outside of my arrow realm of existece. I started to thik about my relatives i New Jersey, some of whom commuted to New York daily; some of whom probably kew people who worked i the towers. I started to thik of the actual people i those towers, ad I started to feel guilty for my selfishess. The my attetio shifted to my immediate surroudigs: my mother at the stove, puttig the fiishig touches o our daily family meal; my father pacig betwee his office ad his bedroom, doig whatever fathers do to ear a livig, eve i the midst of a atioal tragedy; but most of all, my eyes were draw to my brother, ie years youger tha I: he was buildig somethig. Although his eyes rarely left the televisio scree, he was meticulously placig oe block atop aother, costructig two twi towers out of toys. Whe his towers bega to rise above his ow meager height, he foud a toy airplae, which was give to me by my gradfather whe I was youg. He held it delicately betwee his tiy figers, made a oise like a little boys do whe they try to soud like a egie VROOM VROOM! ad careeed that little piece of metal ito his tower of woode blocks, which shattered with a itesity ad meaig far surpassig the real thig: the actual destructio of the actual towers did ot affect me, but this child s-play reditio of reality istatly shook me from my reverie: I kew the, as playthig smashed ito playthig, that the world would ever be the same. For some reaso, this iocet child had to register this mometous evet before I could. Whe historic aiversaries ievitably come alog, it s importat that we take a momet to reflect, ot oly o the momets themselves, but also o how we experieced them, how they felt to us at the time. This exercise has a revelatory potetial. It ca tell us about ourselves: who we were, who we are, ad who we wat to become. It also reiforces a poit that is ofte lost o may of us: that some of the most importat or memorable momets of our lives are othig more tha stories to successive geeratios. It is our job to relate these momets to them, emphasizig their historic magitude, their humaity, ad most importatly, how they made a deep impressio o our lives. Do ot be faithearted or afraid; do ot paic or be terrified by them. For the Lord your God is the oe who goes with you to fight for you agaist your eemies to give you victory. 8 Hispaic Miistry ANNOUNCEMENTS PREPARE YOUR Heart to Pray by: Dom Augusti Guillerad Prayer is, as it were, beig aloe with God. A soul prays oly whe it is tured toward God, ad for so log as it remais so. As soo as it turs away, it stops prayig. The preparatio for prayer is thus the movemet of turig to God ad away from all that is ot God. That is why we are so right whe we defie prayer as this movemet. Prayer is essetially a raisig up, a elevatio. We begi to pray whe we detach ourselves from created objects ad raise ourselves up to the Creator. Now, this detachmet is bor whe we clearly realize our othigess. That is the real meaig of our Lord s words: He that shall humble himself shall be exalted. His whole life was a cotiual abasemet, always more ad more profoud. St. Berard does ot hesitate to say that such a abasemet brigs us face-to-face with God. Hece the peace of souls that have falle, whe, raised up by God, they fid themselves i His presece. Ad it is precisely i their abasemet, oce they have recogized ad admitted it, that they fid Him, because it is there that He reveals Himself. The oly thig that prevets Him from doig so is our self. Whe we ow to our othigess, this self is broke dow, ad oce that happes, the mirror is pure, ad God ca produce ow image i the soul, which the faithfully reproduces His features that are revealed i all their harmoy ad perfect beauty. This is what our Lord meat i that vital passage i the Sermo o the Mout, ad what all huma cosideratios o prayer repeat edlessly but without arrivig at its full spledor: But thou, whe thou shalt pray, eter ito thy chamber ad, havig shut the door, pray to thy Father i secret. Eter this sacred chamber of your soul ad there, havig closed the door, speak to your Father, who sees you i these secret depths, ad say to Him, Our Father, who art i Heave... This itimate presece; your faith i Him who is the secret depth of it ad gives Himself there; the silece toward all that is ot God i order to be all to Him. catholicexchage.com/ca-prepareheart-pray?mc_cid=9ee189c35f&mc_ eid= d94 Queremos ivitarlos a las actividades e español que se está realizado e la Iglesia, cotamos co su presecia para que los grupos se icremete. Paretig Poiter #744: You duped me, O Lord, ad I let myself be duped. (Jeremiah 20: 7) Sometimes each of us makes a fool of ourselves. Share a time that you did somethig foolish ad how you recovered. It will give your child hope that they too ca recover. by Susa Vogt, Reflectios by: J. Coroy Matthew 18:21-35 Forgiveess This is a popular parable, but also should be read i the proper cotext of 18: Verses 15 to 20 dealt with disciplie i the Church, where a brother (sic) sis (maybe agaist you ). The istructio was first reprove him aloe, the with others; the, if that failed, to brig him to the Church. Ad if he refuses, he is to be treated as a Getile ad tax collector. Here, also, the Church has the power to bid ad lose. The the questio arises as to how ofte si should be tolerated. The Greek texts refers to the servat owig his master te thousad talets, a equivalet of billios of dollars, which amout was forgive. The servat was owed the equivalet of about $8,000.00, ad he refused to forgive that amout. There are two coectios with Sirach: First, God aloe has the right of vegeace, or the right to isist o Justice. He is a forgivig God, but if oe does ot forgive others, oe caot expect that very forgiveess of God. You ca see the cotiuity of that thought from Sirach to Matthew, as he put those words i Jesus mouth. Practically, it is probably impossible for ay marriage to succeed if absolute, complete forgiveess is ot offered after a ijury...forgiveess so complete that the ijury is ot oly forgive, but is forgotte. Amesty (forgetfuless) is the oly true form of forgiveess. Reflectios o Scripture Jack Coroy, Ph.D. Marriage Momet #745: Ifidelity is ot always physical. A more subtle form is Emotioal Ifidelity. It ca start whe oe spouse feels uder-appreciated ad gets affirmatio from someoe outside the marriage. Sometimes work (paid or voluteer) or eve the eeds of oe s ow childre ca be the source. Givig time ad attetio ow ca prevet a emotioal affair later. by Susa Vogt, PAGE 14
