Luke 18:13 NO COMPARISONS How many times have we read or heard about someone who s gotten into trouble maybe even fired from a job because of a brush with the law? While our Christian minds tell us to be sorry and even pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying, I m glad I would never do anything like that. And perhaps we wouldn t. But are there some things we do that are still not pleasing in God s eyes? Today s readings caution us not to look so intently at someone else s wrongdoing that we overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of, we come out looking pretty good. There is a danger, however, in using someone else s behavior as a way of reflecting our own goodness. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. PARISH REGISTRAR Active membership at a Parish enables a person to be eligible to sponsor a child for Baptism, to receive financial aid for Catholic Education, to be married in the Parish and to prepare one s children for the Sacraments. To be an active member is to participate in the life of prayer and stewardship in the Parish. All adults over the age of 21, living with their parents or on their own, must register in the Parish to be considered members. The use of the offering envelopes may also help you to qualify for tax incentives. Participating in one or more of the ministries offered by the Parish is proof of the sharing of time and talent for the greater good of our Church Community. ROSARY/DIVINE MERCY Please join us in reciting the Rosary every morning (Monday through Saturday) at 7:35 am before daily Mass. It is a beautiful and spiritual way to start your day. Every day following weekday Mass, we invite you to join us for the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. It starts about five minutes after Mass (around 8:35 am). It can be the best fifteen minutes of the day. If you cannot join us, perhaps you can join the Divine Mercy on EWTN television channel at noon. Take home some fun in God s Word, grab a copy of The Kids Bulletin after each Mass! He is sometimes identified with Jude, the brother of Jesus, but is clearly distinguished from Judas Iscariot. Judas Thaddaeus became known as Jude after early translators of the New Testament from Greek into English sought to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot and subsequently abbreviated his forename. The Armenian Apostolic Church honors Thaddeus along with Saint Bartholomew as its patron saints. In the Roman Catholic Church, he is the patron saint of desperate cases and lost causes.

Thank your for your generosity. Holy Humor One Sunday morning, a mother was sending her eight-year-old son, Little Johnnie, off to Mass by himself. She gave the boy two dollars. One is to put in the collection plate and the other is for you to buy a candy bar for yourself on the way home, she said. Little Johnnie went on his way walking to church, with a dollar in each hand, when all of a sudden he dropped one and it fell right down into a sewer drain. Little Johnnie looked down but couldn t see where it had gone. He got up, brushed off his pant knees, and said, Sorry, Lord, I just lost your dollar. One of the central components of the Jubilee of Mercy is that the Holy Doors throughout the world will be opened during this Jubilee year. When they are opened at the beginning of the year, "the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instils hope." Each diocese has the opportunity to open a Door of Mercy in their diocese, all members of the faithful will have opportunity to make a pilgrimage to their local Holy Door during the Jubilee. These doors are symbols of God's mercy, open to welcome everyone into the compassion of God's love that Christ proclaimed. We at St. Barnabas do not have to travel far for our pilgrimage because St. Anthony s Church in Long Beach has an official Holy Door open as a Door of Mercy during the Jubilee! OUR SPEAKER/CELEBRANT BISHOP GORDON BENNETT, S.J. Bishop Gordon Bennett, S.J., D.D., is a member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) who is in residence at Loyola Marymount University (LMU). Bishop Bennett was appointed by Pope Saint John Paul II as Bishop of the Diocese of Mandeville, Jamaica, in He previously served as an Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore, and as the Principal and President of Loyola High School in Los Angeles. Currently, as the Peter Faber, S.J, Fellow in Ignatian Spirituality and Pastoral Ministry at LMU, Bishop Bennett directs spiritual retreats for clergy, religious and lay persons, and he continues to build an outstanding reputation as a spiritual guide and church leader.
