1 First Sunday Of Lent February 14, 2016 ST. BARNABAS CATHOLIC CHURCH 3955 Orange Avenue, Long Beach, California (562) Website: Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8 MISSION STATEMENT: We, the Catholic Community of St. Barnabas Parish, are a people formed by Christ, called in Baptism and united in the Eucharist; we continue the mission of the Church in the world through Prayer, Apostolic Works, Evangelization, and Christian Stewardship. JESUS AND THE DEVIL The devil tempted Jesus by quoting scripture, as today s Gospel reminds us. Try a self-serving miracle. Try selling out. Try dazzling the audience; people are gullible, after all. Try all these easy ways. The tempter tries to urge Jesus onto the slippery slope, attempts the old softsoap, the snake-oil solutions that are always readily at hand. The devil knows better, but is powerless to do better, much less be better. The devil is evil personified, who senses in Jesus the stronger, truly attractive presence of holiness. Evil is exposed and engaged, we are reminded in this Sunday s Gospel. Evil knows the jig is up. The undoing of lies begins with Jesus, who takes up the work of soulhealing and world-healing. This Lent, the Church invites us to enter into this renewing, re-creative work and be made whole again. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co Romans 10:8 Be diligent in serving the poor. Love the poor, honor them as you would Christ himself. St. Louise de Marillac

VALENTINE Feast Day: February 14 Saint Valentine, officially known as Saint Valentine of Rome, is a thirdcentury Roman saint widely celebrated on February 14 and commonly associated with "courtly love." Although not much of St. Valentine's life is reliably known, and whether or not the stories involve two different saints by the same name is also not officially decided, it is highly agreed that St. Valentine was martyred and then buried on the Via Flaminia to the north of Rome. Paragraph Source: ROSARY/DIVINE MERCY Please join us in reciting the Rosary every morning (Monday through Saturday) at 7:35 am before daily Mass. It is a beautiful and spiritual way to start your day. Every day following weekday Mass, we invite you to join us for the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. It starts about five minutes after Mass (around 8:35 am). It can be the best fifteen minutes of the day. If you cannot join us, perhaps you can join the Divine Mercy on EWTN television channel at noon. Take home some fun in God s Word, grab a copy of The Kids Bulletin after each Mass! 5 February 14, 2016 St. Barnabas Catholic Church Page 5 Our Holy Father, in his declaration of a Jubilee Year of Mercy, has called upon all Catholics to follow the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. In many respects, that message echoes the spirit of Together in Mission. Pope Francis has enlivened the Church to renew our spirit of evangelization. Through their ministries and education supported by funds provided by Together in Mission, recipient parishes and schools are doing just that, reaching out to their communities and making the message of God s love known to those around them. You may have already responded, and for that we are grateful. Those who have not yet made a pledge or a donation to the program yet, please consider doing so. This annual appeal is the only one of its kind in the United States, a restricted appeal where the proceeds can only be used to assist those parishes and schools in dire financial need. It is NOT used for deferring any costs of the Archdiocese s operations, any of its liabilities, or litigation neither past nor present. Each of us is called to share his or her gifts in support of the Church. We must first support our own parish, then our Archdiocese, and then our Church throughout the country and world. Please return pledge envelopes to the Parish Office or collection baskets. Your generosity is very much appreciated. For more info, visit: St. Barnabas Baseball PLAY BASEBALL FOR ST. BARNABAS! St. Peter asked them just one question, When you are in your casket and your friends are mourning your loss, what would you like to hear them say about you? The first one replied, I would like to hear them say that I was not only a great doctor but also an outstanding family man. The second one, without hesitation, responded, I would like to hear them say that I was the best teacher they ever had and that I made a lasting, positive impression on everyone of them. The third man took his time mulling over the question. Then his face brightened and he said, I would love to hear them say, Look! He's moving! OH, BROTHER! 6 Page 6 St. Barnabas Catholic Church February 14, 2016 Treasures from our Tradition Today Lent begins. Ash Wednesday initiates the forty days of the Lenten fast, but since Sundays are not tallied in the days of fasting, today is the solemn opening of the forty days of Lent. The Church has work to do today, principally the calling forward of those chosen (the proper word is elected) for the Easter sacraments. Some of those who have been catechumens may now make a transition to a new way of life as the elect. For them, this Lent will be a time of purification and enlightenment. For us who accompany them, it is a time of helping them discern God s call and prepare for new life. This year, while the readings from the third year of the Lectionary cycle are usually read, they are set aside on certain Sundays for the benefit of the elect. We turn then to the readings from Year A, and we give those who journey to the font of baptism three extraordinary companions. In the Gospels for those days, we meet the woman of Samaria and the man born blind, and we come to the tomb of Lazarus three days after his death. Many bishops celebrate the Rite of Election on or near today, affirming God s choice for these new faithful, and also offering them the solidarity of many companions. In 2013, over 38,000 adults entered the baptismal waters in the United States, a remarkable testimony to the vigor of our tradition of receiving and nurturing adult faith. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Safeguard The Children Kik Messenger and the dangers of anonymous messages Social media sites are available to anyone with an internet connection (computer, phone, tablet). Your kids may be sharing their lives with complete strangers, and parents should be aware of the sites they use, what they share, and who their friends are. One mobile app, Kik, is regarded as the most dangerous site for internet predators, because users can send messages to anyone with a cellphone, including young children. Kik has no options for parental controls, leaving kids exposed to the entire web. To learn more about this app in the Virtus article Mobile App Danger Kik Messenger, jvienna@la-archdiocese.org. Lenten Service Project 2016 Our 1st and 2nd Year Confirmation Youth are sponsoring a Lenten Service Project for our parish community. They are putting together Easter Food Baskets for Catholic Charities in Long Beach and Sock Kits for the people on Skid Row through the Catholic Worker Organization. We are calling on you the community of St. Barnabas to open your hearts and wallets to help us provide many of the items needed. The purple insert within this bulletin list the items that are most needed by these charitable organizations. Please bring what you can to church before or after all the Masses the starting February 21st, or send with your youth to the Religious Education classes. There will be plastic bins around the church marked Lenten Service Project for your donations. Make this your family Almsgiving Lenten Project for this Lenten Season. Remember to keep these needy families and people in your prayers. The confirmation youth will collect and sort the items and assemble them with notes of encouragement on Sunday, March 20th in the Parish Hall from 2:00pm 5:00pm.
