Isaiah 9:1 LIBERATION AND REFORM While you might have to reach for an atlas to determine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, today s first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is prophetic of Jesus future ministry in that province. The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Liberation is the theme: liberation from both ignorance ( darkness ) and sin (the yoke ). As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that develops, even among good people, of equating their own will with the common good. This always brings dissension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of Christ s party. The gospel is not to divide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today s Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah s prophecies. The theme is Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 4:17). ROSARY/DIVINE MERCY Please join us in reciting the Rosary every morning (Monday through Saturday) at 7:35 am before daily Mass. It is a beautiful and spiritual way to start your day. Every day following weekday Mass, we invite you to join us for the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. It starts about five minutes after Mass (around 8:35 am). It can be the best fifteen minutes of the day. Known also for her charitable works, in 1883 she relocated with six other Sisters to Hawaii to care for persons suffering Hansen's Disease on the island of Moloka i and aid in developing the medical infrastructure in Hawaii. Despite direct contact with the patients over many years, St. Marianne Cope did not contract the disease. She was declared a saint by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012 and her feast day is on January 23. When children express that something is wrong at school or with other activities, it's often the job of caregivers to read between the lines to determine what's really going on. They might say "I'm bored" and need your guidance finding a better school-life balance or engaging in more challenging academic work. Ask them to give examples and to help you understand what is going on. If the child is still being vague, remind them that they can tell you anything and that you'll listen with an open mind. As parents and caregivers, you have the opportunity to help kids deal well with negative feelings and challenges. And, if they are being mistreated in some way, keeping an open line of communication with kids will enable you to be their advocate. The pastoral council reviewed plans submitted by several architects and chose a most fitting design-a building in the shape of a fish-to honor its namesake. Antony, and the Pastoral Council, invite all St. Barnabas parishioners to place our focus on one of the most beautiful gifts of our faith, the Rosary. Our "Year of the Rosary" began on January 1, 2017 and will conclude on December 31, We will focus on strengthening our worship and prayer activities, with spiritual talks, and events throughout HOW TO GET INVOVLED In celebration of the Year of Mercy, several activities are in planning stages. Our parish has many of our ministries involved in building a Rosary Committee to bring these activities to life. If you have a strong love for the rosary, or are feeling called to bring yourself in to more community with our parish, please consider joining this group. JOIN OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY MINISTRY We are providing an opportunity for those interested in making rosaries, to join this new Ministry! The 1st day scheduled to make rosaries will begin on: Saturday, March 18th at 3:00pm in the Parish Hall. ROSARY LEADERS NEEDED We have begun praying the rosary before Mass on weekends. Already a tradition in our daily masses, we are seeking individuals and families who would lead our church in a rosary 25 minutes prior to each of our Saturday vigil and Sunday masses. There is a red folder with sign-up sheets located in the church entrance near the sacristy door, or you can contact the parish office for assistance or inquiry. FR. GEORGE SHARES WITH US THE ROSARY On Sunday, January 22 at 4:00pm, Fr. George Reynolds, will return to give a talk on the foundation of the rosary, guiding our hearts to praying this beautiful gift from our Blessed Mother. If you would like to learn more about why we pray the rosary, how to pray it, or to deepen your knowledge of the rosary, this is the perfect start to our year long journey through the mysteries and beauty of the rosary. Following Fr. George s talk, we will continue with praying a rosary together, and conclude with our regularly scheduled 5:30pm Mass. This is sure to be a great evening no one will want to miss! 6 Page 6 St. Barnabas Catholic Church Father Michael Gaitley, MIC, is a member of the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception. Prior to his ordination to the priesthood, he received a Masters Degree in Theology and a Licentiate Degree in Moral Theology. After his ordination to the priesthood, Fr. Michael succeeded Fr. Seraphim Michalenko, MIC, as the director of the Association of Marian Helpers, a spiritual benefit society with more than 1,000,000 members. As director, he has launched a new pastoral initiative called Hearts Afire: Parish-based Programs for the New Evangelization (HAPP). 7:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. He is also the author of the best-selling Marian Press books, Consoling the Heart of Jesus, 33 Days to Morning Glory, The 'One Thing Is Three, You Did It To Me, The Second Greatest Story Ever Told, Divine Mercy Image Explained, and Divine Mercy Explained.
