The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. THREE MISSIONS John1:29 Today we begin with one of the servant songs from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus ministry of service. Isaiah s mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be a light to the nations (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identified: it is part of the universal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians. Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrated last Monday, today s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus outranks John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John s baptism, even though it is he himself who is the Lamb of God. Copyright J. S. According to Christian belief, he was killed during the Roman emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. He is commonly depicted in art and literature tied to a post or tree and shot with arrows. Despite this being the most common artistic depiction of Sebastian, he was, according to legend, rescued and healed by Irene of Rome. Shortly afterwards he went to Diocletian to warn him about his sins, and as a result was clubbed to death. He is venerated in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Saint Sebastian is a popular male saint, especially among athletes. His feast day is January 20. Source: catholiconline.org Like us on Facebook! #stbarnabaslb Follow us on

This year, Fr. Antony, and the Pastoral Council, invite all St. Barnabas parishioners to place our focus on one of the most beautiful gifts of our faith, the Rosary. Our "Year of the Rosary" began on January 1, 2017 and will conclude on December 31, We will focus on strengthening our worship and prayer activities, spiritual talks, and events throughout HOW TO GET INVOVLED In celebration of the Year of Mercy, several activities are in planning stages. Our parish has many of our ministries involved in building a committee to bring these activities to life. If you have a strong love for the rosary, or are feeling called to bring yourself in to more community with our parish, please consider joining this group. Please contact the parish office for more information. - ROSARY LEADERS NEEDED Beginning in February, our parish will begin praying the rosary before Mass on weekends. Already a tradition in our daily masses, we are seeking individuals and families who would lead our church in a rosary 25 minutes prior to each of our Saturday vigil and Sunday masses. There is a red folder with sign-up sheets located in the church entrance near the sacristy door, or you can contact the parish office for assistance or inquiry. - FR. GEORGE SHARES WITH US THE ROSARY On Sunday, January 22 at 4:00pm, Fr. George Reynolds, will return to give a talk on the foundation of the rosary, guiding our hearts to praying this beautiful gift from our Blessed Mother. If you would like to learn more about why we pray the rosary, how to pray it, or to deepen your knowledge of the rosary, this is the perfect start to our year long journey through the mysteries and beauty of the rosary. Following Fr. George s talk, we will continue with praying a rosary together, and conclude with our regularly scheduled 5:30pm Mass. This is sure to be a great evening no one will want to miss! St. Barnabas School News Page 5 Treasures From Our Tradition As soon as Christmas ends, people begin planning for Easter! Originally, the source of our Paschal Triduum was but a single liturgy extending from Saturday sundown to sunrise on Easter Sunday. The two days leading up to the liturgy were days of fast, not only for the elect, but for the church preparing to baptize them. A fifth-century pope explained that the church imitated the apostles, who were in hiding with their grief from the arrest of Jesus, and therefore sacraments, even penance, were forbidden. Inevitably, though, people wanted to come together, and so eventually a Liturgy of the Word developed for Good Friday. This was the first step toward today s shape of the Triduum, and gradually new ideas were embraced, including the veneration of the cross and a simple Communion service. Interestingly, the Word remained central, since we know that in those days the pope did not receive Communion at this liturgy, even though the faithful had that option. In the other churches of Rome, priests and people received Communion under both species. Although the custom of Communion on Good Friday took hold, it did not endure past the Middle Ages. The central liturgies of the year slowly unraveled and disappeared from parish life. Remember that there were no seminaries in those days, and books were a rare luxury. Most priests could only manage to celebrate a simple low Mass, and few parishes could afford the ritual books that would guide a priest through the complex forms. Holy Week remained important in private devotion, but for a time the liturgies virtually disappeared. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 6 St. Barnabas Catholic Church Page 6 January 15, 2017 Edith Desmond Daley Oct. 25, Jan. 4, 2017 Edith Desmond Daley was born on October 25, 1932, to Judge Walter and Mrs. Eleanor Desmond. Edith was proud of her Long Beach family heritage and was the beloved youngest sister of Walter, Olive, Gerald, Philip, Richard, Wayne, Mary, Connie, and Eleanor, all of whom preceded her in death. Edith attended Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in La Canada Flintridge, California and was graduated from Long Beach Poly High School in 1950, prior to attending Long Beach City College. She met her future husband, Robert Daley, in 1952 when mutual friends invited them on a St. Barnabas youth group weekend sailboat trip to Catalina Island. It was a trip that would last a lifetime. In 1955, Bob and Edith were married at St. Barnabas church in Long Beach and Bob entered the Air Force. Edith loved her life as the wife of an Air Force pilot. Their travels took them to many bases around the United States and culminated in Bob's eventual retirement from Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. In 30 years of Air Force life they raised eight children while moving households 19 times. Edith made every house a home for her husband and growing family. She embraced the cultures and customs of each new community and encouraged her kids to do the same. Upon Bob's retirement, they returned home to Long Beach where they lived within a mile of their childhood homes for the next 32 years. Edith loved reconnecting with friends and family. She was an active member of Las Hermanas Auxiliary of Assistance League of Long Beach and the Long Beach Petroleum Club where she once served as Women's Chair. Edith's greatest love was for her family. Her interests included life-long learning, art, museums, travel, culture, politics, cooking and shopping. She was guided in life by her strong Catholic faith and was a friend to all God's creatures. She offered a warm welcome and a beautiful smile and there was always a soft bed and an extra place at the table. All who knew her will remember her generosity, compassion, kindness and sense of humor. Edith died peacefully in her home after a short illness. She was surrounded by her loving family, who cherished her and will miss her dearly. Edith is survived by her husband, Robert Daley, and her children: Monica, Dianne, Ellie, Mary, Susan, Katie, Robert, Jr., and Amy; her grandchildren: Erin, Whitney, Katie, Jake, Ryan, Zane, Van, Miranda, Robert III, and Aliyah; her honorary grandchildren: Kadeem and Gary; her daughter- and sons-inlaw, brothers- and sisters-in-law, and many, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Solis of Los Angeles named bishop of Salt Lake City - By Catholic News Service WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Pope Francis has named Auxiliary Bishop Oscar A. Solis of Los Angeles as bishop of Salt Lake City. Bishop Solis, 63, a native of San Jose City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, has been auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles since Previously, he served the Archdiocese of Manila and the Diocese of Cabanatuan, both in the Philippines, before coming to the United States in The appointment was announced Jan. 10 in Washington by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. At a news conference at diocesan offices where he was introduced, Bishop Solis said the visit was only his second in Utah, but he pledged to quickly learn about the Catholic community of 300,000 people. "I humbly submit myself to you as the new servant leader of the Diocese of Salt Lake City and a shepherd for the people of the state of Utah," he said. Bishop Solis said he worked "very hard" for the past 13 years in the Los Angeles Archdiocese. "I would like to emphasize the words 'very hard,'" he said, to laughter from those gathered at the news conference. "And lo and behold, I received a very surprising and shocking phone call informing me that Pope Francis was asking me to become the 10th bishop of Salt Lake City." The call from Archbishop Pierre was "a curveball out of nowhere," Bishop Solis said, recalling how he asked, "Am I in trouble?" But the nuncio "made me feel at peace" with the assignment, the bishop said. After the call, the bishop said his life changed completely, and he felt that the "world stopped turning around." He felt afraid of the uncertainties and that the human element somehow overcame the grace of God. "I was living and working comfortably in Los Angeles," he said, thinking it would be the place in which he retired, "but the walls of heaven were made open, and a voice came out and said, 'You fool!' Because man proposed and God disposes." Since receiving the appointment, he has learned about Catholic Community Services' and other pastoral outreach to the poor and needy. He said he looked forward to hearing the voices of the well-known Madeleine Choir School students and work with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to enhance the well-being of all the people of Utah. Bishop Solis' installation is March 7 at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City. The Diocese of Salt Lake City has been without a bishop since Archbishop John C. Wester was installed in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe June 4, Bishop Solis earlier told the Angelus News, the archdiocesan multimedia platform, that his appointment is "a recognition of the diversity of the church in America and the universality of the church." He added, "I know what it means to be a pastor, a shepherd of a particular diocese. It is a tremendous blessing and a responsibility and a privilege to be of service to the local church in the United States of America, coming from the Philippines."
