4 Page 4 St. Barnabas Catholic Church PARISH NEWS & MORE HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15TH Wednesday, August 15, 2018 is a Holy Day of Obligation for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please make sure you attend one of these special Masses below: TUESDAY, AUGUST 14: (VIGIL MASS) 6:30PM WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15: 8:00AM & 6:30PM Today's feast celebrates Mary's Assumption into heaven. It is one of three feasts of Mary that are Holy Days of Obligation for Catholics in the United States. January 1 is the feast of Mary, the Mother of God, and December 8 is the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has long been held as an important Catholic belief. The belief was not defined as dogma, however, until 1950 by Pope Pius XII. The dogma teaches that Mary, who was without sin, was taken, body and soul, into the glory of heaven. Eliminating this gender divide early may help combat sexual abuse and assault. FEATURED KNIGHT St. Barnabas Parishioner, Bob Kalowes, has been sworn in as Secretary for the Southern California Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. In a formal ceremony at Mary Star of the Sea Church in San Pedro. Bob said he was honored to be a part of such a wonderful organization. Bob started with Knights in 2010 and had served as Grand Knight for the council at St. Barnabas and for a number of years as District Deputy serving all of Long Beach. He went on to say he will happily continue to serve on the pathway God has chosen for him. There, the pious ladies, as the neighbors called them, were asked by their priest friend, by then the president of Georgetown University, to begin a religious community.

The unique vision of this order followed a sensible routine, less arduous and more flexible than most traditions, and also accepted widows and older women.

Most of the European convents had been lost under the reign of terror, and the rules and customs of the community could not be obtained.

6 Page 6 St. Barnabas Catholic Church TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1794, a young Irishwoman befriended two widows aboard ship while immigrating to America. They bought a house in Philadelphia and began to live a community life under the direction of a priest. Soon they relocated to Washington. There, the pious ladies, as the neighbors called them, were asked by their priest friend, by then the president of Georgetown University, to begin a religious community. In 1799 they established a branch of the Visitation Order founded by Saint Jane de Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales in the 1620s. The unique vision of this order followed a sensible routine, less arduous and more flexible than most traditions, and also accepted widows and older women. Amazingly, this American outpost of the Visitation began without reference to the rule of the Order. Most of the European convents had been lost under the reign of terror, and the rules and customs of the community could not be obtained. A copy of the rule was discovered in 1812, and in 1816 the pope officially established the monastery. By then, some French nuns had regrouped, and they sent a habit and cross to be copied. (No religious wore the habit in public in the United States until after the Civil War.) From the beginning, the Georgetown nuns had an educational mission, even though they discovered in the rule that such work was officially off-limits for the contemplative life. In America, the nuns depended on a school for their livelihood, so the rule was adapted. Today, the Academy of the Visitation is a thriving example of excellence in Catholic education, and the adjacent monastery is the oldest monastic foundation in the original thirteen United States.
