Last week we began a long stretch of Ordinary Time that will bring us to late November. Saint Paul tells us today that those who are baptized have clothed yourselves with Christ (Galatians 3:27). This scripture is echoed in the Church s baptism ritual when we sing, You have put on Christ, in him you have been baptized. This message is inspiring and sobering at the same time, for in today s Gospel, we get to the heart of what it means to be clothed in Christ. The Lord tells us, If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me (Luke 9:23). For the next twenty-two weeks we are called to take up the cross and, with Saint Luke as our guide, follow in the footsteps of Christ. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. WHO LOVES TO READ? Father George has graciously donated a lot of books that he has collected over the years here at St. Barnabas, and would love to share them with you! Stop by the Parish Office and take a look! If you see something you like, you are more than welcome to keep it! If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads. Ralph Waldo Emerson Holy Humor There was a flood that threatened a village. One man said to everyone, "I'm staying! God will save me!" The flood started and a boat came by and the man in it said "Come on, get in!" "No!" said the man. "God will save me!" The waters kept rising and by now the man had climbed onto the roof. A helicopter zoomed in and offered to rescue the man. "No!" he said, "God will save me!" Eventually, the man drowned. At the gates of heaven, he expressed his disappointment to God: "Why didn't you save me?" God said, "For goodness sake, child! I sent a boat and a helicopter. What more did you want?" According to scriptures, the Angel Gabriel visited Elizabeth and Zachariah to tell them they would have a son and that they should name him John. Zachariah was skeptical and for this he was rendered mute until the time his son was born and named John, in fulfillment of God's will. When Elizabeth was pregnant with John, she was visited by Mary, and John leapt in her womb. This revealed to Elizabeth that the child Mary carried was to be the Son of God. John began public ministry around 30 AD, and was known for attracting large crowds around the Jordan River. When Jesus came to him to be baptized, John recognized him and said, "It is I who need baptism from you." Jesus told John to baptize Him anyway, which he did, whereupon the heavens opened, and the Spirit of God was seen like a dove. The voice of God spoke, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." John instructed his followers to turn to Christ, and these people were among the first Christians. John the Baptist was beheaded sometime between 33 and 36 AD. His feast day is celebrated on June 24. Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee Year of Mercy Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. ======================================= Together In Mission: Though We Are Many We Are One.
6 Page 6 St. Barnabas Catholic Church June 19, 2016 Letter From Father George Reynolds To My Brothers and Sisters of St. Barnabas: Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for a wonderful fifteen years of service as your Associate Pastor. I can never adequately express what these years have meant for me. I found myself a part of a loving community that helped to nurture myself in my vocation as a Parish Priest. I will miss each family and all members of this community. I ask pardon of all of you for my weakness as well as shortcomings. The valuable lessons that mark my years with this community will help me as I enter my new call as Associate Pastor of St. Cornelius. I thank each Pastor here from Msgr. John Twomey, Msgr. Mac Gonzales, and now the new Pastor, Fr. Antony Gaspar for giving me their help and support. I wish to thank all of you as the laity and religious who make up this Parish for everything you did to support me. I will not say goodbye, but I will say we continue as neighbors. God grant each of you his love and mercy. Sincerely Yours, Fr. George Reynolds Please stop by the Parish Hall today, Sunday, after all the masses and greet Father George and thank him for the 15 years of service to our parish. This is a wonderful chance to honor him and bid him farewell as he heads over to St. Cornelius. Refreshments will be served. Like us on Facebook! #stbarnabaslb Follow us on
