3 HOLY COMMUNION The Day of Pentecost Exploring the promise of God for all Christ sends the spirit of truth May 20, :30 a.m. Choral Eucharist The wind of Christ blows free throughout the world On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Spirit, through whom and in whom the people of God are created and re-created. Pentecost is sometimes called the church s birthday, but might more appropriately be called its baptism day, since the gift of the Spirit is the fullness of baptism. Ezekiel s vision shows the Spirit resurrecting and recreating not just individuals but a whole people. Romans makes it clear that God is in the process of re-creating the entire cosmos; yet the Spirit is also at work in the most intimate and personal way, praying in us with sighs too deep for words when we do not know how to pray. The Holy Spirit gathers us in unity on the first day of the week. The bell prelude is based on Veni Creator Spiritus, (ELW 577), a Latin hymn from the ninth century which has for centuries been sung at ordinations, Pentecost and times the church seeks the counsel of the Holy Spirit, and Komm, Gott Schopfer, (ELW 578) Martin Luther s paraphrase of the Latin hymn. We sing the later version as our processional hymn today. GATHERING PRELUDE Creator Spirit, Heavenly Dove (bells) arr. 4 EASTER WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. Sunday School, Confirmation and High School forum concludes for the program year today. Thanks to all our talented teachers, mentors, and parents for their faithfulness in living into our baptismal promises and sharing faith with our children! Originally Pentecost was a Jewish thanksgiving-type festival celebrated seven weeks after Passover. On this particular Pentecost, however, the Holy Spirit is poured out upon the entire community of believers just as Jesus had promised and the scriptures had prophesied. Empowered by the Spirit, the entire community bears witness to God s activity in multiple languages. CHILDREN S WORD Song by the Sunday School and Choristers Spirit, Come Down arr. READING FROM THE EARLY CHURCH Acts 2:1 21 Filled with the Spirit Luke writes: When the day of Pentecost had come, [the apostles] were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? 13 But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord s great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. a Hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Thanks be to God. SECOND READING Praying with the Spirit Romans 8:22 27 Paul writes to the church at Rome We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; - 4 -

5 By pouring the Holy Spirit into our hearts, God gives us the promised first fruit of eternal life so that we await God s future in hope. In the meantime, the Spirit also intercedes for us by carrying the prayers of our weak human hearts to God. 23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. When speaking to his disciples before his death, Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as the Helper and described the difference the Spirit would make in their lives and in the world.. Jesus says: When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. 27 You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. 16:4b I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, Where are you going? 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; 11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

After the offering is gathered, bread, wine, money, and other gifts are brought forward. The assembly stands as the procession reaches the chancel. 11 WORSHIP LIFE ! We have celebrated with joy the fifty days of Easter! We did our best to keep the party going for fifty days. Our Easter shout was maintained, Alleluia! Christ is risen. Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia! We kept the alleluia ringing on our lips, and in our hymns. We baptized, we confirmed. We prayed for healing and sent out quilts with Easter joy. We kept the Easter environment as long as we could. The paschal candle burned brightly in our midst a sign of the risen Lord we ll keep around for baptisms and funerals. We received the Lord s Supper standing, in a posture of praise. Gold and white and pink textiles added to the celebration. The carillon rang out a few minutes longer each Sunday this season. Over time the lilies, and the trumpets. This is the Feast got dropped along the way. Our need for praising rubbed up against our need to be respectful of people s time. Big Red, our festival processional cross got a little heavy, but the Alleluias continued. It s hard to keep a party going for fifty days. Almost impossible. And now Day Fifty the pente in Pentecost has arrived. One more day of Easter excess parties are by definition excessive and then we re out of here. Blown out of here by the power of the Holy Spirit let loose by the resurrection. The time has come for the elaborate party to come to an end. The time has come to be blown out of our Upper Room. Strengthened by our family, by our family story, by our Easter meal, by our Easter celebrations, our work now moves from in here to out there. With the coming of summer in the Church s year, God sends us forth out of our Easter festival and into the world with the ministry of Christ. Worship plans after Pentecost become simpler; ordinary time some people call it. The Sundays are no longer labeled with festival titles they re just Sundays the Lord s Day the weekly gathering of Jesus with his people on the day of his resurrection. And the work is goes on as we join with Christ in his saving activity beyond our church doors. Thank God for Easter. But thank God too for ordinary days of ministry. So take one more deep breath of the party. Breathe in the fire and the power of the Holy Spirit for ministry, and then, for God s sake Get out of here!
