2 GREETINGS FROM THE HOLY LAND! Dear Friends in Christ, Greetings from the Holy Land! I have included a group photo taken outside of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This photo was taken after we walked the Way of the Cross- the same route our Blessed Lord traveled on His way to Calvary. On Monday, August 27th, we prayed at the Western Wall which is also referred to as the Wailing Wall. As is the custom, I slipped a note of prayer intentions in one of the cracks of the Wailing Wall. One of the intentions I wrote was for all of you- for your personal needs and that we all grow in holiness. As was the case for the Israelites, who once abandoned their sacred covenant with God- requiring great purification- so too the Catholic Church is facing a similar time of purification. As in the days of ancient Israel, it is not so much the people, but their leaders who have caused this great scandal and division within the Church. The recent revelations of the former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, have rocked the Church to her core. In solidarity with Archbishop Lori, I invite you to join me for an evening of worship and prayerful reflection before the Blessed Sacrament on Friday, September 7th, at 7:00pm in the church. Let us pray for the victims and that the truth will come to light- in every sector of holy Mother Church, so that the true Church might shine forth- as a light brightly visible. Mary, Mother of the Church-Pray for us,

The minimum age to volunteer is 14, and 14-year- olds must be accompanied by an adult. Parking is very limited, so we will carpool from St. Joseph. Depending on the response, we may only need volunteers to commit to only one or two Saturdays for the year. 8 DIVINE MERCY Every Friday in our chapel, people gather from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and other devotions. Do not miss this great opportunity for spiritual growth! BAPTISM PREP CLASS The next Baptism Preparation Class is scheduled for Monday, September 17th at 7:00 p.m. The class is held in the Parish Center in Room 2/3. Please call Erica Stemski at or to register for the class and to receive more information. Please join us at our next monthly Respect Life Mass on Saturday, September 15th, at 8:15 A.M. After Mass, we will pray the Rosary for Life in the chapel to protect and defend the most basic and fundamental of our rights: the right to life. Above all, the common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition for all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination. (Pope John Paul II, Christifideles Laici, 1988, no. 38) It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness; He is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; He is the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is He who provoked you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for compromise; it is He who urges you to shed the masks of a false life; it is He who reads in your hearts your most genuine choices, the choices that others try to stifle. It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more human and more fraternal. -Bl. John Paul II Once you have looked after your loved ones, please remember St. Joseph Church in your will and ensure that your values live forever.

17 DON T MISS THIS TALK! Beyond Here There Be Dragons: The World s Oldest Story by Dr. Robert Miller, O.F.S. When: Thursday, September 7pm Where: The Parish Center at St. Joseph Fullerton DR. ROBERT MILLER IS A PROFESSOR OF THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR GRADUATE STUDIES AT THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA. HE IS THE AUTHOR OF MANY WORKS ON THE OLD TESTAMENT INCLUDING THE DRAGON, THE MOUNTAIN, AND THE NATIONS: AN OLD TESTAMENT MYTH, ITS ORIGINS AND AFTERLIVES (2018). HE IS A SECULAR FRANCISCAN AND FATHER OF FOUR. Israel does personify evil -- not as a devil with horns, a tail and pitchfork, but as a dragon. Israel borrowed this mythic image from its neighbors and used it strategically throughout the Old and New Testaments to say something about the nature of evil. As it turns out, the story Israel tells of the dragon is not hundreds, but thousands of years older than the Bible. Why? Why does Israel use this perennial human myth, and what does it mean theologically to worship a God who is both dragon-slayer and dragon-tamer?
