2 Humanae Vitae s Enduring Value for Marriage and the Family Dear Friends in Christ, As I often mention, our mission as a parish is to strengthen marriage and the family- a mission that is actualized in a variety of ways throughout the year. For instance, in last week s bulletin column, I wrote about the summer soccer clinic that the St. Joseph Athletic Association hosted here on campus. I also wrote about the first annual School of Catholic Rock camp. On Monday, July 30 th, 40 middle school and high school students will participate in a weeklong work-camp. While these programs are geared towards our youth, we also offer a variety of programs for seniors as well, such as morning and evening Bible study classes as well as other adult formation programs. This fall we will also offer a bereavement class for those mourning the loss of a loved one as well as an evening event where we will invite all those who have lost a loved one over the past year to come together for an inspirational talk, prayer, and fellowship. Of course, at the heart of marriage and the family is the gift of human life. For the remainder of this column, I would like to reflect on the enduring value and perennial teaching contained within Blessed Paul VI s prophetic document: Humanae Vitae, which in English means Of Human Life. July 25 th marked the 50 th Anniversary of Humanae Vitae. In this papal document, Blessed Paul VI affirmed the constant teaching of the Church regarding marriage and the family. To commemorate this 50 th Anniversary, Archbishop Lori has written a pastoral letter and has asked all pastors to make this document available and to preach on its message. We have provided copies of Archbishop Lori s pastoral letter in the church and have also created a link on our website. On page two of his pastoral letter, the Archbishop points out that the, central feature (of Humanae Vitae) is an affirmation of the Catholic teaching that the marital embrace should always be about both love and life: unitive and open to new life. In 1968, this did not land well in the United States. The FDA had approved the birth-control pill eight years earlier. Most had embraced it wholeheartedly, not fully aware of its physical, relational and psychological challenges. Many of us remember the reaction throughout the Church. Even those who don t can imagine the widespread confusion. Many priests wrestled with how to share the beauty and consistency of the teaching in the context of truly pastoral ministry; but others tacitly or overtly encouraged the use of contraception among their congregants. In this quote from Archbishop Lori, we have the affirmation of Church teaching, the great challenge of a contraceptive culture in the development of the birth- control pill, and the confusion and lack of clarity that existed within the Church after Humanae Vitae was promulgated. Where do we go from here? First, I want to thank all our married couples for your witness to the openness to life. As the first of seven children, I can appreciate the sacrifices that are entailed in raising a family, as I have witnessed my parents live out their vocation. I am also grateful for the witness of my three married siblings, who have made we an uncle 10 times over now! As a priest who has walked with families who have struggled with conceiving a child, or who have raised children with special needs, I am humbled by the love and patient acceptance that is manifested in such marriages. I would ask you to read the Archbishop s pastoral letter and prayerfully consider why the teaching contained within Humanae Vitae is still valid today. Finally, I want to thank you for your witness to marriage and the family. The more authentically priests live out their call to celibate love for the sake of the Kingdom of God, and the more authentically married couples live out their vocation to marriage and the family, the more we will make present the Kingdom of God here at St. Joseph Church. In Christ,

6 "The poor have much to teach you. You have much to learn from them." St. Vincent de Paul St. Joseph Parish, in coordination with our African Catholic Community, is sponsoring a new outreach to our brothers and sisters in need in Baltimore City. We have committed to send 10 parishioners on the fourth Saturday of the month to serve lunch at Our Daily Bread. Our shift is 9AM to 1PM. The minimum age to volunteer is 14, and 14-year- olds must be accompanied by an adult. Parking is very limited, so we will carpool from St. Joseph. Depending on the response, we may only need volunteers to commit to only one or two Saturdays for the year. If you are interested in volunteering for this valuable ministry, please contact Becky Drinks: bdrinks@stjoefullerton.org or Available dates: Sept. 22, Oct. 27, Nov. 24, Dec. 22, Jan. 26. It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness; He is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; He is the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is He who provoked you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for compromise; it is He who urges you to shed the masks of a false life; it is He who reads in your heart your most genuine choices, the choices that others try to stifle. It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more human and more fraternal. John Paul II HOLY INNOCENTS: MINISTRY TO FAMILIES WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED MISCARRIAGE If you or someone you know is miscarrying or has miscarried and is in need of advice, spiritual support, a home visit, and/or burial and memorial, please contact us at our helpline or holyinnocents@archbalt.org. 7 Public Policy Supreme Court Update, Roe Prayer and Education Initiative From the USCCB Pro-Life Secretariat: Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy's announcement that he will retire has significantly propelled Roe v. Wade into the news. Pro-abortion groups are pulling out all the stops to urge the U.S. Senate to reject any nominee who does not promise to publicly endorse Roe v. Wade. And they are misrepresenting the legal and social reality of Roe and what would happen if it is overturned. Although the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops does not support or oppose the confirmation of any presidential nominee, we can-and must-raise grave concerns about a confirmation process that is being grossly distorted by efforts to subject judicial nominees to a litmus test of support for Roe v. Wade. Those concerns were communicated in a letter to the Senate by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, president of the USCCB, and by thousands of Catholics through an action alert we sent out through NCHLA/Human Life Action. But we must do more. We must pray and continue to educate about how Roe is not health care, is bad law, and fails women. Given this historic moment, from Friday, August 3, Friday, September 28, 2018, Catholics will be urged to participate in a 9-week effort of prayer, fasting and education that this change in the Court will move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed in life. Using the USCCB Call to Prayer network, participants will receive a weekly or text reminder to pray and fast along with a fact about Roe to share with others including their two U.S. Senators (through the NCHLA/ Human Life Action). Sign up will be quick and easy at but we'll need your help to spread the word. ARCHDIOCESE OF BALTIMORE MOBILE APP The Archdiocese of Baltimore has developed a mobile version of its website and an App for Apple and Android mobile device users, to make it easier for Catholics to stay connected to their local Church, including parishes and schools, while on the go.
