PRELUDE WELCOME GATHERING HYMN: All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly (ELW 461) CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let us confess to our God, for the Lord is just in all his ways and kind in all his doings. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. Faithful God, you uphold those who are falling and raise up all who are bowed down. Therefore we confess our sins both things we have done and things we have left undone in every confidence that you will open your hands to us in an embrace of forgiveness and love. Dearly beloved, through the power of the Spirit that is at work within us, God forgives our sins and strengthens our inner beings. So now live knowing the love of Christ, which surpasses all knowledge and fills us with the fullness of God. 5 PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray together. Generous God, you give us what we need and satisfy our desires in due season. Grant that our inner beings may be strengthened through your Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith, that you may accomplish within us far more than all we ask or can imagine.

FIRST READING: 2 Kings 4:42-44 A reading from 2 Kings. 42 A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing food from the first fruits to Elisha, the man of God: twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. Elisha said, Give it to the people and let them eat. 43 But his servant said, How can I set this before a hundred people? So he repeated, Give it to the people and let them eat, for thus says the Lord, They shall eat and have some left. 44 He set it before them, they ate, and had some left, according to the word of the Lord. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM: Psalm 145:10-18 The psalm is sung responsively. 10 All your works shall praise you, O Lord, and your faithful ones shall bless you. 11 They shall tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your power, 12 that all people may know of your power and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; your dominion endures through- out all ages. You, Lord, are faithful in all your words, and loving in all your works. 14 The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up those who are bowed down. 15 The eyes of all wait upon you, O Lord, and you give them their food in due season. 16 You open wide your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. 17 You are righteous in all your ways and loving in all your works. 18 You are near to all who call upon you, to all who call up- on you faithfully. SECOND READING: Ephesians 3:14-21 A reading from Ephesians. 14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. 16 I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18 I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length

7 and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The assembly stands to welcome the gospel. GOSPEL: John 6:1-14 The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. 1 After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3 Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?" 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, "Six months' wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little." 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 9 There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people? 10 Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, "Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost." 13 So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, "This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world." 8 SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY: Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness (ELW 843) APOSTLES CREED The assembly stands to proclaim the Apostles Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION God of abundance, you open your hand and feed us in due season, satisfying the desires of every living thing. A brief silence. We pray for the family of nations, the families in our communities, and our own families, that they may have all they need to live in peace and harmony. You are just in all your ways, and kind in all your doings. We pray for all churches and denominations, that we may find ways of cooperating to care for the earth, and care for those in need, while giving you the glory in all that we do. You are just in all your ways, and kind in all your doings. God, you are near to all who call out to you. Use us, as you used the boy with two fish and five barley loaves, to answer the cries of the hungry. You are just in all your ways, and kind in all your doings. We pray for the victims of war and violence, for the orphans, mothers, and men who must live on the streets, and for all those who are seen as the fragments of society. May they be gathered up so that no one is lost. You are just in all your ways, and kind in all your doings.

9 Here other intercessions may be offered. We pray for the sick and those facing the end of their days. May Christ dwell in their hearts through faith, and may they know that they are rooted and grounded in love. You are just in all your ways, and kind in all your doings. When we would make you a king, forgive us. When we are caught up in the storms of life, come to us, calm our fears, and help us to reach our destinations. Now through the power of the Holy Spirit, and in the love of Christ, to you be the glory in the church for all generations. 10 LORD S PRAYER Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. The assembly is seated. COMMUNION White grape juice and gluten-free wafers are available. By your Spirit strengthen us to serve all in need and to give ourselves away as bread for the hungry, through Jesus Christ our Lord. BLESSING Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, keep you in his light and truth and love now and forever.

The week that we helped Family Promise was a great success because the 6-year old girl who stayed here felt safe and comfortable while her mom worked on getting her life in order. Natalie did not want to leave and asked if she could come back. That should help all of us understand what our contribution is to the families that are in the Family Promise program. We do this so the kids and their parents don t have to worry about where they will be staying each night. It was a small contribution but a huge impact on the child. Thanks again to all those that volunteered by supplying needed items, cooking meals, staying over night, and just offering some company. Trinity s next week is Sept 2-9. Mike Nutter needs someone to help him as he will be gone part of that week. He can get all the preliminary schedules set up but we will need someone to be a contact while he is gone.
