3 More News and Notes ~Ash Wednesday is Coming!~ Just a Reminder: This coming Wednesday, February 18th, is Ash Wednesday the day which marks our entry into the Great and Solemn Season of Lent. Bringing Up the Gifts at Sunday Mass If you, or your family, would like to bring up the bread and wine to be consecrated at our Sunday Masses, please see one of our Ushers when you arrive for Mass. They will appreciate your help, and this will save them some time as well. Religious Education Reminders Feb. 18th. Ash Wednesday - Liturgy of the Word of Ashes (Meet in Church at 6:30pm) No Regular Classes Feb. 25th. Regular Classes for All Grades Mar 4th. Penance Service for Grades 6-10, Regular Classes for Grades 1-5 Reminder: Our Monthly Divine Mercy Holy Hour Is Held the Last Sunday of each Month From 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the Church. This special time of prayer and adoration (When the Last Sunday devotion will take place with the Family Stations of the Cross) Service Opportunity for SsPP Confirmation Students -200 people. The students will be able to eat as well. They should be done by 6:30 PM. Students will need to be picked up from the Shelter. Pope Francis Prayer Intentions for February: Universal: That prisoners, especially the young, may be able to rebuild lives of dignity. Evangelization: That married people who are separated may find welcome and support in the Christian community. This is a strong program/event for parishes opening the door to the Bishop's reflection: Teach My People to Pray, and unwrapping the updated Pastoral & Finance Council Policies; as well as workshops continu- Intenciones de nuestra Papa Francisco: Universal: Para que los encarcelados, en especial los jóvenes, puedan reconstruir una vida digna. 4 Dear Parish Family ~ This weekend, many people will be caught up with all of the commercial aspects of Valentine s Day. We will be urged to BUY! BUY! BUY! Do we really know the true story and meaning of St. Valentine s Day? What we call Valentine's Day is properly known throughout the Church as the "Feast of St. Valentine." It was a religious holy day, because for Christians in the past this day was a day to remember and celebrate the life and death of a Christian martyr - someone who had died for their faith in Christ. In fact, for millions of Christians around the world today (those Christians who still take the time to remember and commemorate and honor the Saints) Feb. 14 is still considered a holy day. St. Valentine was a Priest near Rome in about the year 270 A.D. At that time the Roman Emperor was Claudius II, who has come to be known throughout history as Claudius the Cruel. Around this time Claudius started persecuting and imprisoning Christians for not worshipping the Roman gods. It was also just a few years before this time that war broke out in the Roman Empire. And the emperor soon became angry when he saw that the number of soldiers were too few. And so, to free the young men from the burdens of marriage so that they would be free to go to war, he ordered that no marriages should be celebrated and that all engagements must be broken off immediately. St. Valentine understood this order as unjust and immoral. He continued to administer the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, and to catechize Roman soldiers. When he was eventually arrested, and not only refused to abandon the Faith, but actually continued to catechize other prisoners, he was beaten and beheaded; suffering martyrdom in hatred of the Faith on February 14th, 270 A.D. All of our loved ones deserve our respect and love throughout the entire year. We can show this beautifully by random acts of kindness and gentleness. I, as your pastor, appreciate and love each of you with the Love of Christ. Today is also World Marriage Day. Let us pray for, and support all of our married couples, and also all of those preparing for this wonderful Sacrament of Matrimony here in our parish this year. Again, in these final days before we begin our Lenten Journey, let us prayerfully ask ourselves: How does my baptized discipleship express itself in service to others? Does my daily schedule resemble that of Christ, who balanced serious prayer with compassionate work on behalf of others? Some Upcoming Events: Wednesday, February 18th, is Ash Wednesday, the Beginning of Lent. Our schedule of services is as follows: 8:00 AM Mass, with imposition of Ashes 4:00 PM Mass, with imposition of Ashes 6:30 PM Bilingual Liturgy of the Word (not a Mass), with imposition of Ashes (This service will take the place of our Regular Religious Education Classes). Fridays of Lent: Stations of the Cross, after the 8:00 AM Mass. Sundays of Lent: Family Stations of the Cross, and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament 3:00pm. Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 25th. So bring your prayerful hearts and busy hands! Grief Support Group The Healing Your Grieving Heart ecumenical grief support group, will be meeting on Thursday evenings: Feb 19 th & 26 th, Mar 12 th, 19 th, & 26 th, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, at Resurrection Catholic Parish Church, 333 Hilltop Drive, in Green Bay. Participants are asked to attend all 5 sessions. There is no fee for these sessions, which are sponsored by St. Matthew's & Resurrection Parishes. This program is open to anyone who has lost a loved one through death. Learn how you can save the family and the culture-- The Seven Last Words Lenten Study On Thursday evenings, during Lent (not including Holy Thursday), the Parish Life and New Evangelization Prayer Group will be meeting for a Lenten study on the Seven Last Words of Christ. These gatherings will take place in the Fr. Schuh Hall, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, and will be facilitated by Michael Lee, our Religious Education/Faith Formation Facilitator. No registration is required. All those attending should bring with them a Catholic Bible. Lenten Bible Study Thursday Mornings This Study follows JESUS' JOURNEY TO THE CROSS, from The Word Among Us. Thursday's 6:30 AM -7:30 AM, February 26th, through April 2nd, here at Ss,Peter and Paul, in the Fr. Schuh Hall. The cost of the program is $10 for the study guide. Please Pre-Register TODAY, so that we can order a sufficient number of books. What will you DO for Lent; AND, What will You Give up? Many people have come to see this as an either/or sort of thing. Actually, the Church calls us to BOTH: We are called to grow in virtue and holiness, through prayer and works of Mercy, AND we are called to Make Sacrifices as we are able. There s still time before Ash Wednesday, and your Lent will be more fruitful if you think and pray about this now. 5
