3 Dear Parishioners, Some of us are probably a bit relieved to see Ordinary Time return. The Christmas decorations have been carefully stored, life resumes its more predictable pace (even if that pace is hectic, it s often less frenetic after Christmas), and many of us are still keeping our new year s resolutions! I wonder sometimes, though, if we don t pack away Christmas and its insights with the decorations. Christmas forces us to recognize God s love for us, for each of us as individuals and for all of humanity. Christmas is a season of love showered with abandon. If we don t take time to really allow Christmas to flow over us and to sink into our hearts, we ll miss what Christmas asks of us: how can we face God s unbridled love for us without returning that love lavishly? We need to prayerfully acquire Samuel s attitude: Here I am! Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. How do we listen for and to the voice of the Lord? How do we hear Christ say, as the first disciples in today s gospel did, Come and you will see? As we enter this new year together, the year of our Lord 2018, let us resolve to listen attentively for God s voice, and to respond simply and in trust, Here we are, Lord. Your community of the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains is listening. New Year Blessings, Fr. 5 Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains 325 West Eighth Street Cincinnati OH PARISH OFFICE Phone: (513) ; Fax: (513) MUSIC OFFICE (513) WEBSITE: stpeterinchainscathedral.org The March for Life in Washington, D.C., began as a small demonstration and rapidly grew to be the largest pro-life event in the world. The peaceful demonstration that has followed on this somber anniversary every year since 1973 is a witness to the truth concerning the greatest human rights violation of our time, legalized abortion on demand. Please pray for all of those who are traveling to Washington DC this week for the March for Life. Active Parishioner Status We receive many requests from parishioners to qualify for weddings here, or to be godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at the Cathedral. Part of that request is to be able to verify that a person is an "active member' of the Cathedral Parish. Because of the nature of our congregation having so many visitors, it is difficult to know everyone. An active member" of this parish is one who: Is properly registered and on the parish census Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and Holy Days Participates in parish activities when possible Uses the parish envelope system While assessments of an inquirer's status will be made individually, the above are the main factors that will be considered in making that determination. If you would like to update your information and/or inquire about your membership status, please call the parish office.
6 MINISTRY OF READER & MINISTRY OF EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMUNION The liturgies of the Cathedral are the hallmark of celebration in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and it is always important that we have a regular group of individuals available to serve as Readers and Ministers of Holy Communion for each of our principal Sunday Masses as well as for weekdays. At this time, we are actively recruiting members of the congregation to step forward and dedicate your time to one of these ministries. There will be training provided in late January prior to your being added to the schedule. Please call the Cathedral Office at , for additional information and to let us know of your willingness to serve. We truly need you! 7 January 2018 Intentions of the Holy Father That Christians, and other religious minorities in Asian countries, may be able to practice their faith in full freedom. Serra Club for Vocations We have found the Messiah! After his encounter with Jesus, St. Andrew goes first to find his brother Peter to also bring him to Christ. Do not be afraid to bring others to Christ as well! (John 1:41). If you would like to learn more about how you can pray for vocations, please join the Serra Club of Cincinnati for one of their bi-monthly meetings. They meet here at the cathedral in the Undercroft South on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 12noon. Sung Solemn Vespers Solemn Vespers will be held on Sunday, January 28th at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Mount St. Mary's Seminary, 6616 Beechmont Avenue, Cincinnati, OH In honor of the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Mount St. Mary s Latin Schola and Athenaeum Chorale will perform choral settings of a number of hymns and liturgical texts written by St. Thomas himself. There is no admission charge. All are welcome. Week of Prayer for Christian Unity The theme for the 2018 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which is celebrated Jan , is Your Right Hand, O Lord, Glorious in Power. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has a 100-year history, beginning as an eight-day period of prayer in 1908 called the Church Unity Octave, established by founders of the Society of the Atonement, Mother Lurana White and Servant of God Father Paul Wattson of Graymoor. The octave begins with the feast of the Chair of St. Peter (Jan. 18) and ends on the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul (Jan. 25). Pope Pius X gave his blessing to the Church Unity Octave and in 1916, Pope Benedict XV extended its observance to the universal Church. Please visit for prayer ideas and resources. Lenten Retreat How Do I Seek the Kingdom of God? with Bishop Joe Binzer, Fr. David Endres and Fr. Eric Wood at St. Margaret of York, Loveland February Lunch is provided for all who pre-register. Cost is a free-will offering, so everyone can afford to come! Visit to register. Mass Intentions Did you know that you can have Masses offered for your friends and family? The Church considers the Mass the greatest possible prayer of intercession because it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the Paschal Mystery of His death and resurrection. It is a longstanding tradition in the Church that a Priest may be requested to offer a Mass for a specific intention, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass. To find out more about scheduling a Mass intention here at the cathedral please call the parish office. In Catholic social tradition, "rights" correspond to the treatment every person deserves not because of background or individual merit, but by virtue of being created in the image and likeness of God. As followers of Christ, we are called to a concern for our brothers and sisters. This means that, in acknowledging rights, we also acknowledge responsibilities. St. John Paul II writes, "every man is his 'brother's keeper', because God entrusts us to one another" ( Evangelium Vitae, 19). In our complicated world, it can be easy to get overwhelmed by public policy. However, we are not exempt from engaging in public life. Today, we remember that we are all called to work to ensure that social structures uphold human dignity and support true human flourishing.
