3 The Most Holy Trinity May 27, 2018 RECTOR S RAMBLINGS Dear Parishioners, Chapter 29 in the Book of Proverbs, the New American Bible (NAB), the translation we read from at Mass, renders verse 18a: Without prophecy the people become demoralized. I rather prefer the King James translation of the same verse: Where there is no vision, the people perish. I like playing with that little piece of scripture a bit and restating it as, Where there is vision the people parish. That is to say where there is vision or the mode of seeing or conceiving, of discernment and foresight there, in that place is where the people of God become a community, a parish.a Church. The word parish comes from the Greek words para + oikos, loosely translated it means, house of strangers. I think that it is not strange at all that we use this word, parish to describe the place where strangers come together and become a family. The parish, our spiritual, emotional and physical home that connects us to God and to one another is the place where we are formed, thus becoming God s faith filled people the Body of Christ! There is a church in Sussex, England circa 1730, which has inscribed upon its walls the words, A vision without a task is a dream. A task without a vision is drudgery. A vision and a task is the hope of the world. I believe the vision of just who God wants us to be is set forth in the Gospels, God wants us to be a faith filled and loving people. It is truly as simple as that. Christ established the Church as a means whereby His presence in the world would be forever established. The Church is the place where people come to know the Lord through the Sacraments and through those who are members of the Church, those who are disciples of Jesus Christ, those who are true stewards of God s gifts. The Church is Christ s body and thus holy. The Church is Christ s presence in the world and thus perfect. Our responsibility as God s people is to take upon ourselves the tasks necessary in order that the vision may come to fruition, in order that the Kingdom of God may be established. Naturally, the difficulty with all of this dwells not in the Church but in those who are its members, our humanity gets in the way. It s people who sin, it s people who make mistakes, from peon to pope, we all do it, sin that is! The Church is here to help us overcome that sinfulness and to live more fully a life modeled on Jesus Christ (God). But people have to give the Church a chance. We have to give Christ a chance. Just as thank God, Christ gives us the chance a multiplicity of times (I think He said something about 70 times 7 somewhere in the Gospels!). How is the vision of the Gospel to be accomplished if not through the Church? I am not certain how anyone thinks it can be. Martin Luther thought it could and look at the mess he started (speaking of sin) 40,000+ denominations/ways of being Christian just in the United States. Each and every one of them possessing less of the truth than the one they broke away from. Christ established the Church, Christ is in the Church and has been since He established it nearly 2000 years ago. The Church has been faced with plenty of sin in it s past and will be in it s future, it s a human institution. Don t forget, we human beings are the ones who think we run the Church, we human beings are the ones who are its members. But always it is the good that wins out it is Christ, the One who really runs the Church and calls us into a loving relationship with God and each other. It is Christ who comes to the fore and who helps us to overcome the evil that is in our hearts. I am a firm believer that the Church will do the right thing. In the meantime, we as members of Christ s Body must persevere in prayer and in the tasks that bring the vision of the Gospel to accomplish Christ s work in the world. If we remain steadfast in the hope of God s grace and mercy the vision will be fulfilled. But we must do our part; we must remember that we have a task to fulfill, to cooperate in the work of the Church the work of Jesus Christ. We have a vision and we must remain task oriented if there is to be hope for the world. Remember, we are responsible for supporting one another on this journey of life that we have entered into together called the parish our family. If we do not remember this most important part of the task we shall perish. If I may, please allow me to return to my opening remarks about the NAB translation of Proverbs 29, Without prophecy the people become demoralized. I think we could find ourselves in that place demoralized if we leave Christ out of the equation. Christ provides us with a vision, expects us through His grace, to join in the task of bringing it about and together we look forward to its fulfillment. On this day when we celebrate the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity, I am, Sincerely Yours in the Risen Christ, Fr. Jan 3

4 Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains Cincinnati, Ohio SACRAMENTAL LIFE FAITH & OUTREACH WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS INFANT BAPTISM Baptisms for children under the age of 7 are held privately at the convenience of the family and presiding clergy. Please contact the Cathedral Office for details and to make arrangements. CONFIRMATION Catholic adults, whom for various reasons have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation but would like to do so, please contact the Cathedral Office to make an appointment with one of the priests on staff. EUCHARIST Communion to the homebound can be arranged by simply calling the Cathedral Office for details and to make arrangements. Parishioners who require low-gluten hosts due to allergies or other medical conditions may contact the Cathedral Office and we will be happy to make the proper arrangements for you to be able to receive Communion at Mass. WANT TO BE CATHOLIC If you are an adult (over the age of 7) and are already baptized in another Christian tradition the process for Full Communion with the Catholic Church is as simple as contacting the Cathedral Office for an appointment with the Rector, Fr. Jan Schmidt. In the event you are not Baptized, the process for becoming Catholic is called the RCIA or the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults that requires a more in-depth preparation and period of study. For further information please contact Mrs. Debbie Birck through the Cathedral Office. ANOINTING OF THE SICK Please do not wait until the point of death to receive this sacrament. A careful judgement about the serious nature of the surgery or illness is sufficient. This sacrament may be repeated in the event the illness worsens. For those who are near death the Church offers Confession, Anointing of the Sick and the Eucharist as Viaticum or Food for the Journey. Contact the Cathedral Office to make arrangements or in an emergency please feel free to call the Rector, Fr. Jan MARRIAGE Any resident Catholic of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati may celebrate their marriage in the Cathedral with permission of their rightful Pastor. Please contact the Cathedral Office for details and to make arrangements. Please contact us at least 6 months (minimum) prior to the tentative wedding date. FREEDOM TO MARRY An annulment is more accurately described as a Declaration of the Freedom to Marry. If you are a Catholic or are planning to marry a Catholic and you have been previously married and divorced we would like to assist you in the healing that is necessary in order to move forward with your life. Part of this healing is the effort to obtain an annulment or a Declaration of Nullity that then provides you with the freedom to marry in the Catholic Church. We want to help, it doesn't cost anything so, please contact the Cathedral Office to set an appointment with one of the priests on staff. PRIESTHOOD, RELIGIOUS LIFE AND THE PERMANENT DIACONATE If you think you may have a vocation to priesthood, religious life or the permanent diaconate please speak with one of the priests on staff or contact Fr. Dan Schmitmeyer for priesthood and religious life or Deacon Mark Machuga for the Permanent Welcome, New Parishioner! Leamon Wells Please call the Cathedral Office or visit our website if you would like to become a registered parishioner. ST. VINCENT de PAUL We take calls each week and do visits on Saturday mornings at the Cathedral from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. All are invited. We cover the downtown and Over the Rhine areas. Many places call people they help clients but to us they are neighbors. Most of our calls are for help with rent, Duke bills and food. Often, we help neighbors avoid evictions or lose their heat and electricity. We also provide beds in addition to furniture and clothing/household vouchers that can be redeemed at one of our SVDP stores. We also give out holy cards and encourage our neighbors to deepen their relationship with God. The motto of the society is No form of help is foreign to the society. We cannot do this work without your help. Thank you. For more information or to let the group know to expect you, please call ACTIVE PARISHIONER STATUS Who is a Parishioner? If you are regularly attending Mass here at the Cathedral you are a Parishioner. However, if you are not registered then it is a bit difficult for us to communicate with you and without communication there really isn t much of a relationship. So, please register by calling the Cathedral Office so that we may count you amongst the elect and importantly please be with us regularly at Mass for Sunday s and Holy Days, participate in Cathedral ministries and activities when possible and yes, please support the community financially through EFT or Direct Deposit or the parish envelopes placed each week in the collection. 4

5 The Most Holy Trinity May 27, 2018 COMMUNITY NEWS Support Life! The Cathedral s Baby Bottle Campaign will once again help support Old St. Mary s Pregnancy Center. Please pick up an empty baby bottle, found at the exits of church, and fill it with spare change (or any donation you would like to give). Bring it back on Father s Day weekend, or you can bring it to any Mass and give it to an usher or sacristan. Procession and Benediction on June 3 Next Sunday, June 3, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, commonly called Corpus Christi. At the end of the 11:00am Mass on June 3, there will be a procession during which the Blessed Sacrament will be carried through the Cathedral, followed by the congregation, and concluding in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. All are encouraged to participate and celebrate this most precious gift of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Did you know that you can have Masses offered for your friends and family? The Church considers the Mass the greatest possible prayer of intercession because it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the Paschal Mystery of His death and resurrection. It is a longstanding tradition in the Church that a Priest may be requested to offer a Mass for a specific intention, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass. The faithful make a free will offering, called a stipend, to a priest or Religious Community in order to apply the Mass to a specific intention. By making this offering, the faithful, by making their own offering, associate themselves more intimately with Christ who offers Himself in the Sacred Host, and obtain thereby more abundant fruits. To find out more about scheduling a Mass intention here at the cathedral please call the parish office. The Cathedral will start hosting a Donut Sunday on the Fourth Sunday of each month after the 8:30am Mass! We will gather in the narthex or outside on the plaza (weather permitting). Please be sure to join us for delicious donuts, a hot cup of coffee, and wonderful company. One of the most important aspects of being church to one another is fellowship getting to know one another in a relaxed atmosphere and delving deeper into our relationship with Christ as we journey together. Donut Sunday this month is May 27! Marking its 13th annual event, thousands of tristate residents will gather at Newport's Riverfront Row festival area Sunday, June 3, 2018 to celebrate the beautiful gift of human life regardless of age or stage, ability or disability. All are welcome to join this family-friendly event to cross the Purple People Bridge and fill it with the joy of life. Festivities begin at 1:00 p.m. including music by popular Easter Rising band; free face painting; balloon artists; and fruit, water, and t-shirts while they last! Several food trucks will also have treats for purchase. The walk begins after a brief program at 2 p.m. featuring emcee Anna Mitchell, producer/host, Sacred Heart Radio; Bobby Schindler, President, Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network; the Most Reverend Roger Foys, Bishop, Diocese of Covington; Most Reverend Dennis Schnurr, Archbishop, Archdiocese of Cincinnati; vocalist Allison Riegler; and American Heritage Girls color guard. Bagpipers from the Ancient Order of Hibernians will again lead walkers across the bridge. The event will end back at Riverfront Row with more rousing music by Easter Rising and still-open food trucks. For more information on this lifeaffirming event and complete coalition and sponsor lists, see CrossTheBridgeForLife.com, and join the fun on Facebook! 5
