2 Church of Saint Peter In the Spotlight at St. Peter s Saint of the Month Heart of the Ministry Being Involved at St. Peter s Home Missions Appeal, April 23/24 This month s Saint is John Baptist De La Salle, who lived in the late 17 th and early 18 th century in France. He became a priest and was assigned to the Cathedral in Reims. While he was there he was asked to help start a school for poor boys. At the time in France and the other European countries, only the nobility and the wealthy were able to receive education. St. John Baptist gladly helped with the school for boys, and realizing the need for education for all, this became his life s work. He founded a new order, the Christian Brothers, to support and continue his work. In 40 years, St. John Baptist and his Brothers created a network of schools throughout France that featured new innovations, including: classrooms of students with one teacher instead of private tutors, students grouped according to ability, the integration of religious instruction with secular subjects, colleges and vocational schools for the common person, and even Sunday classes so that those who worked Monday through Saturday from sunrise to sunset (the reality for the poor working class) could receive an education. We have St. John Baptist De La Salle to thank for many aspects of our educational system that we take for granted today. It is no wonder he is the patron saint of educators! For more about St. John Baptist De La Salle, please check the narthex for the Saint of the Month display. St. John Baptist De La Salle, pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts forever. Amen. The Church has great needs around the world and the United States is no exception. Over 40% of dioceses in the U.S., including New Ulm, Crookston and Duluth in Minnesota, face challenges due to priest shortages, lack of funds, remote geography, or impoverished parishes. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal provides for these needs through grants for projects that strengthen the faith of the people through evangelization, catechesis, ministry formation, and other areas of faith development. In addition, a portion of this appeal will help the African American and Native American communities with similar spiritual and material challenges through the Black and Indian Mission Office. Thus, a percentage of the Home Missions Appeal will be forwarded to the Black and Indian Mission Office to provide grants for advocacy and spiritual/material programs in the U.S. For more information, contact Deacon Mickey Friesen, or go to friesenm@archspm.org. And you can help! Your support of this collection will strengthen the Church and help your neighbors here in Minnesota and the United States. The Jubilee Year of Mercy December 8, 2015 through November 20, 2016 Frequently Asked Questions About the Jubilee of Mercy What is a Jubilee Year? The practice of a jubilee year has ancient roots in the Jewish tradition and evidence for it can be found in the Old Testament (for example, see Letiviticus 25). The jubilee year was called every fifty years and was a time for forgiveness. It stood as a reminder of God's providence and mercy. The dedication of a year for this emphasis provided the community with a time to come back into right relationship with one another and with God. As the practice of the jubilee year was adopted into the Catholic Church, these themes of mercy, forgiveness, and solidarity continued. How is this Jubilee different from other Jubilee Years? The Jubilee of Mercy that Pope Francis has called, from December 8, 2015 November 20, 2016, is an Extraordinary Jubilee. This designation as an "Extraordinary Jubilee" sets it apart from the ordinary cycle of jubilees, or holy years, which are called every 25 years in the Catholic Church. By calling for a holy year outside of the normal cycle, a particular event or theme is emphasized. For example, Pope Francis called this particular Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy to direct our attention and actions "on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father's actions in our lives... a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective" (MV, 3... ). United States Conference of Catholic Bishops A Vocation View On this World Day of Prayer for Vocations, pray for yourself. Pray to know if God is calling YOU to be a Priest, Deacon, Sister or Brother. Pray!
